Josuas Sieg bei Gibeon

1 Als aber Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, hörte, dass Josua Ai erobert und an ihm den Bann vollstreckt und mit Ai samt seinem König getan hatte, wie er mit Jericho und seinem König getan hatte, und dass die von Gibeon Frieden mit Israel gemacht hätten und mitten unter ihnen wohnten, (Jos 6,1; Jos 8,1; Jos 9,1) 2 fürchteten sie sich sehr; denn Gibeon war eine große Stadt wie eine der Königsstädte und größer als Ai, und alle seine Männer waren Helden. 3 Und Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, sandte zu Hoham, dem König von Hebron, und zu Piram, dem König von Jarmut, und zu Jafia, dem König von Lachisch, und zu Debir, dem König von Eglon, und ließ ihnen sagen: 4 Kommt herauf zu mir und helft mir, dass wir Gibeon schlagen; denn es hat mit Josua und den Israeliten Frieden gemacht. 5 Da sammelten sich und zogen hinauf die fünf Könige der Amoriter, der König von Jerusalem, der König von Hebron, der König von Jarmut, der König von Lachisch, der König von Eglon mit ihren ganzen Heeren und belagerten Gibeon und kämpften gegen die Stadt. 6 Aber die Männer von Gibeon sandten zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal und ließen ihm sagen: Zieh deine Hand nicht ab von deinen Knechten; komm eilends zu uns herauf, rette und hilf uns! Denn es haben sich gegen uns versammelt alle Könige der Amoriter, die auf dem Gebirge wohnen. 7 Da zog Josua hinauf von Gilgal und das ganze Kriegsvolk mit ihm und alle streitbaren Männer. 8 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen; denn ich habe sie in deine Hände gegeben. Niemand unter ihnen wird vor dir bestehen können. 9 So kam Josua plötzlich über sie; denn die ganze Nacht war er heraufgezogen von Gilgal. 10 Und der HERR erschreckte sie vor Israel, dass sie eine große Schlacht schlugen bei Gibeon, und sie jagten ihnen nach, die Steige von Bet-Horon hinauf, und schlugen sie bis nach Aseka und Makkeda. 11 Und als sie vor Israel flohen den Weg von Bet-Horon hinab, ließ der HERR große Steine vom Himmel auf sie fallen bis Aseka, dass sie starben. Und von ihnen starben viel mehr durch die Hagelsteine, als die Israeliten mit dem Schwert töteten. 12 Damals redete Josua mit dem HERRN an dem Tage, da der HERR die Amoriter vor den Israeliten dahingab, und er sprach in Gegenwart Israels: Sonne, steh still zu Gibeon, und Mond, im Tal Ajalon! 13 Da stand die Sonne still und der Mond blieb stehen, bis sich das Volk an seinen Feinden gerächt hatte. Ist dies nicht geschrieben im Buch des Redlichen? So blieb die Sonne stehen mitten am Himmel und beeilte sich nicht unterzugehen fast einen ganzen Tag. (2Sam 1,18; Hab 3,11) 14 Und es war kein Tag diesem gleich, weder vorher noch danach, dass der HERR so auf die Stimme eines Menschen hörte; denn der HERR stritt für Israel. (2Mo 14,25) 15 Josua aber kehrte ins Lager nach Gilgal zurück und ganz Israel mit ihm. 16 Aber die fünf Könige waren geflohen und hatten sich versteckt in der Höhle bei Makkeda. 17 Da wurde Josua angesagt: Wir haben die fünf Könige gefunden, verborgen in der Höhle bei Makkeda. 18 Josua sprach: So wälzt große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle und stellt Männer davor, die sie bewachen; 19 ihr aber, bleibt nicht stehen, sondern jagt euren Feinden nach und fasst sie von hinten; lasst sie nicht in ihre Städte entrinnen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat sie in eure Hände gegeben. 20 Und als Josua und die Israeliten sie ganz geschlagen hatten in dieser sehr großen Schlacht – was übrig blieb von ihnen, entkam in die festen Städte –, 21 da kam das ganze Volk wohlbehalten ins Lager zurück zu Josua nach Makkeda, und es wagte niemand, gegen Israel seine Zunge zu regen. 22 Josua aber sprach: Macht den Eingang der Höhle auf und bringt die fünf Könige aus der Höhle zu mir! 23 Sie taten so und brachten die fünf Könige zu ihm aus der Höhle: den König von Jerusalem, den König von Hebron, den König von Jarmut, den König von Lachisch, den König von Eglon. 24 Als aber die fünf Könige zu ihm herausgebracht waren, rief Josua alle Männer Israels zu sich und sprach zu den Obersten des Kriegsvolks, die mit ihm zogen: Kommt her und setzt eure Füße auf den Nacken dieser Könige. Und sie kamen und setzten ihre Füße auf ihren Nacken. 25 Und Josua sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht und erschreckt nicht, seid getrost und unverzagt; denn ebenso wird der HERR allen euren Feinden tun, gegen die ihr kämpft. 26 Und Josua schlug sie danach tot und hängte sie an fünf Bäume, und sie hingen an den Bäumen bis zum Abend. 27 Als aber die Sonne untergegangen war, gebot Josua, dass man sie von den Bäumen nehmen und in die Höhle werfen sollte, in die sie sich verkrochen hatten. Und sie legten große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle. Die sind noch da bis auf diesen Tag. (5Mo 21,22)

Die Eroberung des südlichen Kanaan

28 An diesem Tag nahm Josua auch Makkeda ein und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwerts samt seinem König und vollstreckte den Bann an der Stadt und an allen, die darin waren, und ließ niemand übrig und tat mit dem König von Makkeda, wie er mit dem König von Jericho getan hatte. 29 Da zogen Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Makkeda nach Libna und kämpften gegen Libna. 30 Und der HERR gab auch dieses mit seinem König in die Hand Israels; und er schlug die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwerts und alle, die darin waren, und ließ niemand darin übrig und tat mit ihrem König, wie er mit dem König von Jericho getan hatte. 31 Danach zogen Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Libna nach Lachisch, und er belagerte die Stadt und kämpfte gegen sie. 32 Und der HERR gab auch Lachisch in die Hände Israels, dass sie es am nächsten Tag einnahmen und es schlugen mit der Schärfe des Schwerts und alle, die darin waren, ganz wie sie mit Libna getan hatten. 33 Zu dieser Zeit zog Horam, der König von Geser, hinauf, um Lachisch zu helfen; aber Josua schlug ihn und sein Volk, bis niemand übrig blieb. 34 Und Josua zog von Lachisch mit ganz Israel nach Eglon und belagerte die Stadt und kämpfte gegen sie; 35 und sie nahmen sie ein an diesem Tag und schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwerts, und Josua vollstreckte den Bann an allen, die darin waren, an diesem Tag, ganz wie er mit Lachisch getan hatte. 36 Danach zog Josua hinauf mit ganz Israel von Eglon nach Hebron, und sie kämpften gegen die Stadt 37 und nahmen sie ein und schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwerts, samt ihrem König und allen ihren Städten und allen, die darin waren; und er ließ niemand übrig, ganz wie er mit Eglon getan hatte, und vollstreckte an ihr den Bann und an allen, die darin waren. 38 Da kehrte Josua um mit ganz Israel nach Debir und kämpfte gegen die Stadt 39 und nahm sie ein samt ihrem König und allen ihren Städten, und sie schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwerts und vollstreckten den Bann an allen, die darin waren, und er ließ niemand übrig. Wie er mit Hebron getan hatte und wie er mit Libna und seinem König getan hatte, so tat er auch mit Debir und seinem König. 40 So schlug Josua das ganze Land – das Gebirge, den Süden, das Hügelland und die Abhänge – und alle seine Könige und ließ niemand übrig und vollstreckte den Bann an allem, was Odem hatte, wie der HERR, der Gott Israels, geboten hatte. (5Mo 20,16) 41 Und Josua schlug sie von Kadesch-Barnea an bis Gaza und das ganze Land Goschen bis Gibeon (Jos 11,16) 42 und unterwarf alle diese Könige mit ihrem Lande auf einmal. Denn der HERR, der Gott Israels, hatte für Israel gestritten. 43 Und Josua kehrte ins Lager nach Gilgal zurück mit ganz Israel. (Jos 15,1)

The sun stands still

1 Adoni-Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the LORD in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni-Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites. 2 The things he heard alarmed him and his people very much. That’s because Gibeon was an important city. It was like one of the royal cities. It was larger than Ai. All its men were good soldiers. 3 So Adoni-Zedek, the king of Jerusalem, made an appeal to Hoham, the king of Hebron. He appealed to Piram, the king of Jarmuth. He appealed to Japhia, the king of Lachish. He also made an appeal to Debir, the king of Eglon. 4 ‘Come up and help me attack Gibeon,’ he said. ‘Its people have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.’ 5 Then the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon gathered their armies together. Those five Amorite kings moved all their troops into position to fight against Gibeon. Then they attacked it. 6 Joshua was in the camp at Gilgal. The people of Gibeon sent a message to him there. They said, ‘Don’t desert us. We serve you. Come up to us quickly! Save us! Help us! All the Amorite kings from the central hill country have gathered their armies together to fight against us.’ 7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his whole army. The army included all his best fighting men. 8 The LORD said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them. I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to fight against you and win.’ 9 Joshua marched all night from Gilgal. He took the Amorite armies by surprise. 10 The LORD threw them into a panic as Israel marched towards them. Then Joshua and the Israelites won a complete victory over them at Gibeon. The Israelites chased them along the road that goes up to Beth Horon. They struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. 11 The Amorites tried to escape as Israel marched towards them. They ran down the road from Beth Horon to Azekah. Then the LORD threw large hailstones down on them. The hailstones killed more of them than the swords of the Israelites did. 12 So the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel. On that day Joshua spoke to the LORD while the Israelites were listening. He said, ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon. And you, moon, stand still over the Valley of Aijalon.’ 13 So the sun stood still. The moon stopped. They didn’t move again until the nation won the battle over its enemies. You can read about it in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky. It didn’t go down for about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since. It was a day when the LORD listened to a mere human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel! 15 Joshua and his whole army returned to the camp at Gilgal.

Joshua kills the five Amorite kings

16 The five Amorite kings had run away. They had hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 Joshua was told that the five kings had been found. He was also told that they were hiding in the cave at Makkedah. 18 He said, ‘Roll some large rocks up to the opening of the cave. Put some men there to guard it. 19 But keep on going! Chase your enemies! Attack them from behind. Don’t let them get back to their cities. The LORD your God has handed them over to you.’ 20 So Joshua and the men of Israel had complete victory over them. They killed almost every one of them. But a few escaped. They went back to their cities that had high walls around them. 21 Then Israel’s whole army returned safely to Joshua. He was in the camp at Makkedah. No one in the land dared to say anything against the Israelites. 22 Joshua said, ‘Open up the cave. Bring those five kings out to me.’ 23 So Joshua’s men brought the kings out of the cave. They were the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 The men brought them to Joshua. Then he sent for all the men of Israel. He spoke to the army commanders who had come with him. He said, ‘Come here. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.’ So they came forward and placed their feet on the necks of the kings. 25 Joshua said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope. Be strong and brave. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.’ 26 Joshua put the five kings to death. He stuck a pole through each of their bodies. Then he set the poles up where people could see the bodies. He left them there until evening. 27 At sunset Joshua ordered his men to take down the bodies. So they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where the kings had been hiding. They placed large rocks at the opening of the cave. And the rocks are still there to this day.

The campaign against the cities in the south

28 That day Joshua captured Makkedah. He cut down its people and their king. He totally destroyed everyone in it. He didn’t leave anyone alive. He did to the king of Makkedah the same thing he had done to the king of Jericho. 29 Joshua moved on from Makkedah to Libnah. Israel’s whole army went with him. They attacked Libnah. 30 The LORD also handed that city and its king over to Israel. Joshua destroyed the city. He and his men killed everyone in it with their swords. He didn’t leave anyone alive there. He did to its king the same thing he had done to the king of Jericho. 31 Joshua moved on from Libnah to Lachish. Israel’s whole army went with him. The men took up their battle positions. Then Joshua attacked Lachish. 32 The LORD handed it over to Israel. Joshua captured the city on the second day of the battle. He destroyed the city. He and his men killed everyone in it with their swords. He had done the same thing to Libnah. 33 While all that was happening, Horam had come up to help Lachish. He was the king of Gezer. But Joshua won the battle over him and his army. No one was left alive. 34 Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon. Israel’s whole army went with him. They took up their battle positions. Then they attacked Eglon. 35 They captured it that same day. They totally destroyed everyone in it with their swords. They had done the same thing to Lachish. 36 Joshua went up from Eglon to Hebron. Israel’s whole army went with him. Then they attacked Hebron. 37 They captured the city. They destroyed it and its villages. They killed all its people and their king with their swords. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They totally destroyed the city and everyone in it. They had done the same thing at Eglon. 38 Joshua turned back and attacked Debir. Israel’s whole army went with him. 39 They captured the city, its king and its villages. They totally destroyed everyone in Debir with their swords. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They did to Debir and its king the same thing they had done to Libnah and its king. They had also done the same thing to Hebron. 40 So Joshua brought the whole area under his control. That included the central hill country and the Negev Desert. It included the western hills and the mountain slopes. It also included all the kings in that whole area. Joshua didn’t leave anyone alive. He totally destroyed everyone who breathed. He did just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded. 41 Joshua brought everyone from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza under his control. He did the same thing to everyone from the whole area of Goshen to Gibeon. 42 He won the battle over all those kings and their lands. He did it in one campaign. That’s because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. 43 Then Joshua returned to the camp at Gilgal. Israel’s whole army went with him.
