1Dies ist das Wort, das vom HERRN geschah zu Jeremia: (Jer 26,1)2Tritt ins Tor am Hause des HERRN und predige dort dies Wort und sprich: Höret des HERRN Wort, ihr alle von Juda, die ihr zu diesen Toren eingeht, den HERRN anzubeten!3So spricht der HERR Zebaoth, der Gott Israels: Bessert euer Leben und euer Tun, so will ich euch wohnen lassen an diesem Ort. (Jer 18,11; Jer 26,13)4Verlasst euch nicht auf Lügenworte, wenn sie sagen: Hier ist des HERRN Tempel, hier ist des HERRN Tempel, hier ist des HERRN Tempel!5Sondern bessert euer Leben und euer Tun, dass ihr recht handelt einer gegen den andern6und gegen Fremdlinge, Waisen und Witwen keine Gewalt übt und nicht unschuldiges Blut vergießt an diesem Ort und nicht andern Göttern nachlauft zu eurem eigenen Schaden, (Jer 22,3)7so will ich euch immer und ewiglich wohnen lassen an diesem Ort, in dem Lande, das ich euren Vätern gegeben habe.8Aber nun verlasst ihr euch auf Lügenworte, die zu nichts nütze sind.9Ihr seid Diebe, Mörder, Ehebrecher und Meineidige und opfert dem Baal und lauft fremden Göttern nach, die ihr nicht kennt. (2Mo 20,3; 2Mo 20,13; Hos 4,2)10Und dann kommt ihr und tretet vor mich in diesem Hause, das nach meinem Namen genannt ist, und sprecht: Wir sind geborgen, – und tut weiter solche Gräuel.11Haltet ihr denn dies Haus, das nach meinem Namen genannt ist, für eine Räuberhöhle? Siehe, ich sehe es wohl, spricht der HERR. (Mt 21,13)12Geht hin an meine Stätte zu Silo, wo früher mein Name gewohnt hat, und schaut, was ich dort getan habe wegen der Bosheit meines Volks Israel. (Jos 18,1; 1Sam 4,4; 1Sam 4,12; Ps 78,60; Jer 26,6)13Weil ihr denn lauter solche Dinge treibt, spricht der HERR, und weil ich immer wieder zu euch redete und ihr nicht hören wolltet und ich euch rief und ihr nicht antworten wolltet, (Jes 65,12; Jer 25,3; Jer 35,15)14so will ich mit dem Hause, das nach meinem Namen genannt ist, auf das ihr euch verlasst, und mit der Stätte, die ich euch und euren Vätern gegeben habe, ebenso tun, wie ich mit Silo getan habe,15und will euch von meinem Angesicht verstoßen, wie ich verstoßen habe alle eure Brüder, das ganze Geschlecht Ephraim. (2Kön 17,18; 2Kön 17,20; 2Kön 17,23)
Gegen falschen Gottesdienst
16Du aber sollst für dies Volk nicht bitten und sollst für sie weder Klage noch Gebet vorbringen, sollst auch nicht in mich dringen; denn ich will dich nicht hören. (2Mo 32,11; 1Sam 12,23; Jer 11,14; Jer 14,11; Jer 37,3; Jer 42,2)17Siehst du nicht, was sie tun in den Städten Judas und auf den Gassen Jerusalems? (Jes 65,11; Jer 19,13; Jer 44,17)18Die Kinder lesen Holz, die Väter zünden das Feuer an, und die Frauen kneten den Teig, dass sie der Himmelskönigin Kuchen backen, und fremden Göttern spenden sie Trankopfer mir zum Verdruss.19Aber machen sie denn mir Verdruss, spricht der HERR, und nicht vielmehr sich selbst zu ihrer eigenen Schande?20Darum spricht Gott der HERR: Siehe, mein Zorn und mein Grimm ist ausgeschüttet über diese Stätte, über Menschen und über Vieh, über die Bäume auf dem Felde und über die Früchte des Landes; der wird brennen, dass niemand löschen kann.21So spricht der HERR Zebaoth, der Gott Israels: Tut eure Brandopfer zu euren Schlachtopfern und fresst Fleisch! (1Sam 15,22; Ps 50,7; Jer 6,20; Hos 8,13; Mi 6,6)22Denn ich habe euren Vätern an dem Tage, als ich sie aus Ägyptenland führte, nichts gesagt noch geboten von Brandopfern und Schlachtopfern;23sondern dies Wort habe ich ihnen geboten: Gehorcht meiner Stimme, so will ich euer Gott sein, und ihr sollt mein Volk sein; wandelt ganz auf dem Wege, den ich euch gebiete, auf dass es euch wohlgehe. (3Mo 26,12; Jer 11,4; Jer 24,7; Jer 30,22; Jer 31,1; Jer 31,33; Jer 32,38; Hes 11,20; Hes 14,11; Hes 34,30; Hes 37,27)24Aber sie wollten nicht hören noch ihr Ohr neigen, sondern wandelten nach ihrem eignen Rat und nach ihrem verstockten und bösen Herzen und kehrten mir den Rücken zu und nicht das Angesicht. (Jes 65,2; Jer 11,8)25Ja, von dem Tage an, da eure Väter aus Ägyptenland zogen, bis auf diesen Tag habe ich immer wieder zu euch gesandt alle meine Knechte, die Propheten. (Jer 25,4)26Aber sie wollten mich nicht hören noch ihr Ohr neigen, sondern waren halsstarrig und trieben es ärger als ihre Väter. (Jer 16,12)27Und wenn du schon ihnen dies alles sagst, so werden sie doch nicht auf dich hören; rufst du sie, so werden sie dir nicht antworten.28Darum sprich zu ihnen: Dies ist das Volk, das auf die Stimme des HERRN, seines Gottes, nicht hören noch sich bessern will. Die Wahrheit ist dahin und ausgerottet aus ihrem Munde.29Schere deine Haare ab und wirf sie von dir und wehklage auf den Höhen; denn der HERR hat dies Geschlecht, über das er zornig ist, verworfen und verstoßen. (Mi 1,16)30Denn die Judäer haben getan, was mir missfällt, spricht der HERR. Sie haben ihre Gräuelbilder gesetzt in das Haus, das nach meinem Namen genannt ist, um es unrein zu machen, (2Kön 21,4; Jer 32,34)31und haben die Höhen des Tofet im Tal Ben-Hinnom gebaut, um ihre Söhne und Töchter zu verbrennen, was ich nie geboten habe und mir nie in den Sinn gekommen ist. (3Mo 18,21; Jer 19,5; Jer 32,35)32Darum siehe, es kommt die Zeit, spricht der HERR, dass man’s nicht mehr nennen wird »Tofet« und »Tal Ben-Hinnom«, sondern »Würgetal«. Und man wird im Tofet begraben müssen, weil sonst kein Raum mehr sein wird.33Und die Leichname dieses Volks sollen den Vögeln des Himmels und den Tieren des Feldes zum Fraß werden, ohne dass sie jemand verscheuchen wird. (5Mo 28,26; Jer 9,21; Jer 16,4)34Und ich will in den Städten Judas und auf den Gassen Jerusalems wegnehmen den Jubel der Freude und Wonne und die Stimme des Bräutigams und der Braut; denn das Land soll wüst werden. (Jer 16,9; Jer 25,10; Jer 33,11)
1A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. The LORD said,2‘Stand at the gate of my house. Announce my message to the people there. Say, ‘ “Listen to the LORD’s message, all you people of Judah. You always come through these gates to worship the LORD.3The God of Israel is speaking to you. He is the LORD who rules over all. He says, ‘Change the way you live and act. Then I will let you live in this place.4Do not trust in lies. Do not say, “This is the temple of the LORD! This is the temple of the LORD! This is the temple of the LORD!”5You must really change the way you live and act. Treat one another fairly.6Do not treat outsiders or widows badly in this place. Do not take advantage of children whose fathers have died. Do not kill those who are not guilty of doing anything wrong. Do not worship other gods. That will only bring harm to you.7If you obey me, I will let you live in this place. It is the land I gave your people of long ago. It was promised to them for ever and ever.8But look! You are trusting in worthless lies.9‘ “ ‘You continue to steal and commit murder. You commit adultery. You tell lies in court. You burn incense to Baal. You worship other gods you didn’t know before.10Then you come and stand in front of me. You keep coming to this house where I have put my Name. You say, “We are safe.” You think you are safe when you do so many things I hate.11My Name is in this house. But you have made it a den for robbers! I have been watching you!’ announces the LORD.12‘ “ ‘Go now to the town of Shiloh. Go to the place where I first made a home for my Name. See what I did to it because of the evil things my people Israel were doing.13I spoke to you again and again,’ announces the LORD. ‘I warned you while you were doing all these things. But you did not listen. I called out to you. But you did not answer.14So what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house where my Name is. It is the temple you trust in. It is the place I gave to you and your people of long ago.15But I will throw you out of my land. That is exactly what I did to the people of Ephraim. And they are your relatives.’ ”16‘Jeremiah, do not pray for these people. Do not make any appeal or request for them. Do not beg me. I will not listen to you.17Don’t you see what they are doing? They are worshipping other gods in the towns of Judah. They are offering sacrifices to them in the streets of Jerusalem.18The children go out and gather wood. The fathers light the fire. The women mix the dough. They make flat cakes of bread to offer to the female god called the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods. That makes me very angry.19But am I the one they are hurting?’ announces the LORD. ‘Aren’t they only harming themselves? They should be ashamed of it.’20So the LORD and King says, ‘I will pour out my burning anger on this place. It will strike people and animals alike. It will destroy the trees in the fields and the crops in your land. It will burn, and no one will be able to put it out.’21The LORD who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, ‘Go ahead! Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices. Eat the meat yourselves!22When I brought your people out of Egypt, I spoke to them. But I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices.23I also gave them another command. I said, “Obey me. Then I will be your God. And you will be my people. Live the way I command you to live. Then things will go well with you.”24But they did not listen. They refused to pay any attention to me. Instead, they did what their stubborn and evil hearts wanted them to do. They went backwards and not forwards.25Again and again I sent my servants the prophets to you. They came to you day after day. They prophesied from the time your people left Egypt until now.26But your people of long ago did not listen. They refused to pay any attention to me. They were stubborn. They did more evil things than their people who lived before them.27‘Jeremiah, when you tell them all this, they will not listen to you. When you call out to them, they will not answer.28So say to them, “You are a nation that has not obeyed the LORD your God. You did not pay attention when you were corrected. Truth has died out. You do not tell the truth anymore.” ’29The LORD says to the people of Jerusalem, ‘Cut off your hair. Throw it away. Sing a song of sadness on the bare hilltops. I am very angry with you. I have turned my back on you. I have deserted you.
The valley of death
30‘The people of Judah have done what is evil in my eyes,’ announces the LORD. ‘They have set up statues of their gods. They have worshipped them in the house where my Name is. They have made my house “unclean”. I hate those statues.31The people have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. There they worship other gods. And there they sacrifice their children in the fire. That is something I did not command. It did not even enter my mind.32So watch out!’ announces the LORD. ‘The days are coming when people will not call it Topheth anymore. And they will not call it the Valley of Ben Hinnom either. Instead, they will call it the Valley of Death. They will bury the dead bodies of some people in Topheth. But they will run out of room.33Then they will not be able to bury the bodies of other people there. So the bodies will become food for birds and wild animals. And no one will scare them away.34I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness. The voices of brides and grooms will not be heard anymore. There will be no sounds of joy in the towns of Judah. And there will be no joy in the streets of Jerusalem. The land will become a desert.
