David wird König über Juda, Isch-Boschet über Israel

1 Danach befragte David den HERRN und sprach: Soll ich hinauf in eine der Städte Judas ziehen? Und der HERR sprach zu ihm: Zieh hinauf! David sprach: Wohin? Er sprach: Nach Hebron. (1Sam 23,6; 1Sam 23,9; 1Sam 30,7) 2 So zog David dort hinauf mit seinen beiden Frauen, Ahinoam, der Jesreeliterin, und Abigajil, der Frau Nabals, des Karmeliters. (1Sam 25,42) 3 Auch die Männer, die bei ihm waren, führte David hinauf, einen jeden mit seinem Hause, und sie wohnten in den Städten von Hebron. 4 Und die Männer Judas kamen und salbten dort David zum König über das Haus Juda. Und als David angesagt wurde, dass die Männer von Jabesch in Gilead Saul begraben hatten, (1Sam 16,13; 1Sam 21,12; 1Sam 31,11; 2Sam 5,3)

5 sandte er Boten zu den Männern von Jabesch in Gilead und ließ ihnen sagen: Gesegnet seid ihr vom HERRN, dass ihr solche Barmherzigkeit an Saul, eurem Herrn, getan und ihn begraben habt. 6 So tue nun der HERR an euch Barmherzigkeit und Treue, und auch ich will euch Gutes tun, weil ihr das getan habt. 7 So seien nun eure Hände stark, und seid tapfer; denn Saul, euer Herr, ist tot, und mich hat das Haus Juda über sich zum König gesalbt. 8 Abner aber, der Sohn Ners, der Sauls Feldhauptmann war, nahm Isch-Boschet^[1], Sauls Sohn, und führte ihn nach Mahanajim (1Mo 32,2; 1Sam 14,50; 2Sam 17,24; 2Sam 17,27; 1Chr 8,33; 1Chr 9,39)

9 und machte ihn zum König über Gilead, Asser, Jesreel, Ephraim, Benjamin und über ganz Israel. 10 Und Isch-Boschet, Sauls Sohn, war vierzig Jahre alt, als er König wurde über Israel, und regierte zwei Jahre. Aber das Haus Juda hielt es mit David. 11 Die Zeit aber, die David König war zu Hebron über das Haus Juda, war sieben Jahre und sechs Monate.

Der Krieg zwischen Israel und Juda

12 Und Abner, der Sohn Ners, zog aus mit den Knechten Isch-Boschets, des Sohnes Sauls, von Mahanajim nach Gibeon, 13 und Joab, der Sohn der Zeruja, zog aus mit den Knechten Davids. Und sie stießen aufeinander am Teich von Gibeon und lagerten sich, die einen auf dieser Seite des Teiches, die andern auf jener. (Jos 9,3; Jos 9,17; Jos 10,1; 1Sam 26,6; 2Sam 8,16)

14 Und Abner sprach zu Joab: Lass die jungen Männer sich aufmachen zum Kampfspiel vor uns! Joab sprach: Es sei! 15 Da machten sich auf und gingen hin zwölf an der Zahl aus Benjamin auf der Seite Isch-Boschets, des Sohnes Sauls, und zwölf von den Knechten Davids. 16 Und ein jeder ergriff den andern bei dem Kopf und stieß ihm sein Schwert in die Seite, und sie fielen miteinander. Daher wird der Ort »Helkat-Hazzurim«^[2] genannt; er liegt bei Gibeon. 17 Und der Kampf war sehr hart an jenem Tag. Abner aber und die Männer Israels wurden geschlagen von den Knechten Davids. 18 Es waren aber die drei Söhne der Zeruja dabei, Joab, Abischai und Asaël. Asaël aber war schnellfüßig wie eine Gazelle auf dem Felde (1Sam 26,6; 2Sam 3,39; 1Chr 2,16) 19 und jagte Abner nach und wich weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken von Abner. 20 Da wandte sich Abner um und sprach: Bist du es, Asaël? Er sprach: Ja. 21 Abner sprach zu ihm: Wende dich zur Rechten oder zur Linken und mach dich an einen der jungen Männer heran und nimm ihm seine Rüstung. Aber Asaël wollte nicht von ihm ablassen. 22 Da sprach Abner noch einmal zu Asaël: Lass ab von mir! Warum willst du, dass ich dich zu Boden schlage? Wie dürfte ich dann mein Antlitz aufheben vor deinem Bruder Joab? 23 Aber er weigerte sich, von ihm abzulassen. Da stieß ihn Abner mit dem Schaft des Spießes in den Bauch, sodass der Spieß hinten herauskam; und er fiel hin und starb an ebender Stelle. Und wer an den Ort kam, wo Asaël tot lag, der blieb stehen. (5Mo 27,24; 2Sam 3,27; 2Sam 20,10) 24 Aber Joab und Abischai jagten Abner nach, bis die Sonne unterging. Und als sie auf den Hügel Amma kamen, der vor Giach liegt auf dem Wege zur Wüste von Gibeon, 25 versammelten sich die Benjaminiter hinter Abner und bildeten eine Schar und stellten sich oben auf einen Hügel. 26 Und Abner rief Joab zu und sprach: Soll denn das Schwert ohne Ende fressen? Weißt du nicht, dass daraus am Ende nur Jammer kommen wird? Wie lange willst du dem Volk nicht sagen, dass es ablasse von seinen Brüdern? 27 Joab sprach: So wahr Gott lebt: Hättest du das nicht gesagt, so hätte sich das Volk erst am Morgen zurückgezogen, ein jeder von seinem Bruder. 28 Und Joab ließ die Posaune blasen, und das ganze Volk stand still und jagte Israel nicht mehr nach und kämpfte auch nicht weiter. (2Sam 18,16) 29 Abner aber und seine Männer gingen die ganze Nacht durchs Jordantal und gingen über den Jordan und zogen durchs ganze Bitron und kamen nach Mahanajim. 30 Joab aber wandte sich von Abner ab und sammelte das ganze Volk, und es fehlten von den Knechten Davids neunzehn Mann und Asaël. 31 Aber die Knechte Davids hatten von Benjamin und den Männern Abners dreihundertsechzig Mann erschlagen. 32 Und sie hoben Asaël auf und begruben ihn in seines Vaters Grab in Bethlehem. Und Joab und seine Männer zogen weiter die ganze Nacht, und als sie in Hebron waren, brach der Tag an.

David is anointed to be king over Judah

1 After Saul and Jonathan died, David asked the LORD for advice. ‘Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?’ he asked. The LORD said, ‘Go up.’ David asked, ‘Where should I go?’ ‘To Hebron’, the LORD answered. 2 So David went up there with his two wives. Their names were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail from Carmel. Abigail was Nabal’s widow. 3 David also took his men and their families with him. They made their homes in Hebron and its towns. 4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron. There they anointed David to be king over the people of Judah. David was told that the men from Jabesh Gilead had buried Saul’s body. 5 So he sent messengers to them to speak for him. The messengers said, ‘You were kind to bury the body of your master Saul. May the LORD bless you for that. 6 And may he now be kind and faithful to you. David will treat you well for being kind to Saul’s body. 7 Now then, be strong and brave. Your master Saul is dead. And the people of Judah have anointed David to be king over them.’

The armies of David and Saul fight each other

8 Abner, the son of Ner, was commander of Saul’s army. Abner had brought Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth to Mahanaim. 9 There Abner made Ish-Bosheth king over Gilead, Ashuri and Jezreel. He also made him king over Ephraim, Benjamin and other areas of Israel. 10 Ish-Bosheth was 40 years old when he became king over Israel. He ruled for two years. But the people of Judah remained faithful to David. 11 David was king in Hebron over the people of Judah for seven and a half years. 12 Abner, the son of Ner, left Mahanaim and went to Gibeon. The men of Ish-Bosheth, the son of Saul, went with him. 13 Joab, the son of Zeruiah, and David’s men also went out. All of them met at the pool in Gibeon. One group sat down on one side of the pool. The other group sat on the other side. 14 Then Abner said to Joab, ‘Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight. Let’s tell them to fight hand to hand in front of us.’ ‘All right. Let them do it,’ Joab said. 15 So the young men stood up and were counted. There were 12 on the side of Benjamin and Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth. And there were 12 on David’s side. 16 Each man grabbed one of his enemies by the head. Each one stuck his dagger into the other man’s side. And all of them fell down together and died. So that place in Gibeon was named Helkath Hazzurim. 17 The fighting that day was very heavy. Abner and the Israelites lost the battle to David’s men. 18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there. Their names were Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Asahel was as quick on his feet as a wild antelope. 19 He chased Abner. He didn’t turn to the right or the left as he chased him. 20 Abner looked behind him. He asked, ‘Asahel, is that you?’ ‘It is’, he answered. 21 Then Abner said to him, ‘Turn to the right or the left. Fight one of the young men. Take his weapons away from him.’ But Asahel wouldn’t stop chasing him. 22 Again Abner warned Asahel, ‘Stop chasing me! If you don’t, I’ll strike you down. Then how could I look your brother Joab in the face?’ 23 But Asahel refused to give up the chase. So Abner drove the dull end of his spear into Asahel’s stomach. The spear came out through his back. He fell and died right there on the spot. Every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died. 24 But Joab and Abishai chased Abner. As the sun was going down, they came to the hill of Ammah. It was near Giah on the way to the dry and empty land close to Gibeon. 25 The men of Benjamin gathered in a group around Abner. They took their stand on top of a hill. 26 Abner called out to Joab, ‘Do you want our swords to keep on killing us off? Don’t you know that all this fighting will end in bitter feelings? How long will it be before you order your men to stop chasing their fellow Israelites?’ 27 Joab answered, ‘It’s a good thing you spoke up. If you hadn’t, the men would have kept on chasing them until morning. And that’s just as sure as God is alive.’ 28 So Joab blew a trumpet. All the troops stopped. They didn’t chase Israel anymore. They didn’t fight anymore either. 29 All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah Valley. They went across the River Jordan. All morning long they kept on going. Finally, they came to Mahanaim. 30 Then Joab stopped chasing Abner. He gathered together the whole army. Besides Asahel, only 19 of David’s men were missing. 31 But David’s men had killed 360 men from Benjamin who were with Abner. 32 They got Asahel’s body and buried it in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night. They arrived at Hebron at sunrise.
