Das goldene Kalb

1 Als aber das Volk sah, dass Mose ausblieb und nicht wieder von dem Berge herabkam, sammelte es sich gegen Aaron und sprach zu ihm: Auf, mache uns Götter, die vor uns hergehen! Denn wir wissen nicht, was diesem Mann Mose widerfahren ist, der uns aus Ägyptenland geführt hat. (5Mo 9,8; 1Kön 12,28) 2 Aaron sprach zu ihnen: Reißt ab die goldenen Ohrringe an den Ohren eurer Frauen, eurer Söhne und eurer Töchter und bringt sie zu mir. 3 Da riss alles Volk sich die goldenen Ohrringe von den Ohren und brachte sie zu Aaron. 4 Und er nahm sie von ihren Händen und formte das Gold und machte ein gegossenes Kalb. Und sie sprachen: Das sind deine Götter, Israel, die dich aus Ägyptenland geführt haben! (1Kön 12,28; Ps 106,19; Apg 7,41) 5 Als das Aaron sah, baute er einen Altar vor ihm und ließ ausrufen und sprach: Morgen ist des HERRN Fest. 6 Und sie standen früh am Morgen auf und opferten Brandopfer und brachten dazu Dankopfer dar. Danach setzte sich das Volk, um zu essen und zu trinken, und sie standen auf, um ihre Lust zu treiben. (1Kor 10,7)

Moses Fürbitte

7 Der HERR sprach aber zu Mose: Geh, steig hinab; denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägyptenland geführt hast, hat schändlich gehandelt. 8 Sie sind schnell von dem Wege gewichen, den ich ihnen geboten habe. Sie haben sich ein gegossenes Kalb gemacht und haben’s angebetet und ihm geopfert und gesagt: Dies sind deine Götter, Israel, die dich aus Ägyptenland geführt haben. (2Mo 20,4; 2Mo 20,23) 9 Und der HERR sprach zu Mose: Ich habe dies Volk gesehen. Und siehe, es ist ein halsstarriges Volk. (5Mo 9,6; Jes 48,4; Apg 7,51) 10 Und nun lass mich, dass mein Zorn über sie entbrenne und sie verzehre; dafür will ich dich zum großen Volk machen. (4Mo 14,11) 11 Mose wollte den HERRN, seinen Gott, besänftigen und sprach: Ach, HERR, warum will dein Zorn entbrennen über dein Volk, das du mit großer Kraft und starker Hand aus Ägyptenland geführt hast? 12 Warum sollen die Ägypter sagen: Er hat sie zu ihrem Unglück herausgeführt, dass er sie umbrächte im Gebirge und vertilgte sie von dem Erdboden? Kehre dich ab von deinem glühenden Zorn und lass dich des Unheils gereuen, das du über dein Volk bringen willst. (5Mo 9,28; Jos 7,9) 13 Gedenke an deine Knechte Abraham, Isaak und Israel, denen du bei dir selbst geschworen und verheißen hast: Ich will eure Nachkommen mehren wie die Sterne am Himmel, und dies ganze Land, das ich verheißen habe, will ich euren Nachkommen geben, und sie sollen es besitzen für ewig. (1Mo 15,5; 1Mo 22,16; 1Mo 26,4) 14 Da gereute den HERRN das Unheil, das er seinem Volk angedroht hatte. (Ps 85,2)

Mose kehrt zurück

15 Mose wandte sich und stieg vom Berge und hatte die zwei Tafeln des Gesetzes in seiner Hand; die waren beschrieben auf beiden Seiten, vorn und hinten waren sie beschrieben. 16 Und Gott hatte sie selbst gemacht, und die Schrift war Gottes Schrift, eingegraben in die Tafeln. (2Mo 31,18) 17 Als nun Josua das Geschrei des Volks hörte, sprach er zu Mose: Es ist ein Kriegsgeschrei im Lager. 18 Er antwortete: Es ist kein Geschrei wie bei einem Sieg, und es ist kein Geschrei wie bei einer Niederlage, ich höre Geschrei wie beim Tanz. 19 Als Mose aber nahe zum Lager kam und das Kalb und das Tanzen sah, entbrannte sein Zorn, und er warf die Tafeln aus der Hand und zerbrach sie unten am Berge 20 und nahm das Kalb, das sie gemacht hatten, und verbrannte es im Feuer und zermalmte es zu Pulver und streute es aufs Wasser und gab’s den Israeliten zu trinken. 21 Und er sprach zu Aaron: Was hat dir dies Volk getan, dass du eine so große Sünde über sie gebracht hast? 22 Aaron sprach: Mein Herr lasse seinen Zorn nicht entbrennen. Du weißt, dass dies Volk böse ist. 23 Sie sprachen zu mir: Mache uns Götter, die vor uns hergehen; denn wir wissen nicht, was mit diesem Mann Mose geschehen ist, der uns aus Ägyptenland geführt hat. 24 Ich sprach zu ihnen: Wer Gold hat, der reiße es ab und gebe es mir. Und ich warf es ins Feuer, und daraus ist dieses Kalb geworden. 25 Als nun Mose sah, dass das Volk zuchtlos geworden war – denn Aaron hatte sie zuchtlos werden lassen zum Gespött ihrer Widersacher –, 26 trat Mose in das Tor des Lagers und rief: Her zu mir, wer dem HERRN angehört! Da sammelten sich zu ihm alle Söhne Levi. 27 Und er sprach zu ihnen: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ein jeder gürte sein Schwert um die Lenden und gehe durch das Lager hin und her von einem Tor zum andern und erschlage seinen Bruder, Freund und Nächsten. 28 Die Söhne Levi taten, wie ihnen Mose gesagt hatte; und es fielen an jenem Tage vom Volk dreitausend Mann. 29 Da sprach Mose: Füllt heute eure Hände zum Dienst für den HERRN – denn ein jeder ist wider seinen Sohn und Bruder gewesen –, damit euch heute Segen gegeben werde. (2Mo 28,41; 4Mo 3,6; 5Mo 33,8)

Die Demütigung des Volkes

30 Am nächsten Morgen sprach Mose zum Volk: Ihr habt eine große Sünde getan; nun will ich hinaufsteigen zu dem HERRN, ob ich vielleicht Sühne erwirken kann für eure Sünde. 31 Als nun Mose wieder zu dem HERRN kam, sprach er: Ach, das Volk hat eine große Sünde getan, und sie haben sich Götter von Gold gemacht. 32 Vergib ihnen doch ihre Sünde; wenn nicht, dann tilge mich aus deinem Buch, das du geschrieben hast. (Ps 69,29; Lk 10,20; Röm 9,3) 33 Der HERR sprach zu Mose: Ich will den aus meinem Buch tilgen, der an mir gesündigt hat. 34 So geh nun hin und führe das Volk, wohin ich dir gesagt habe. Siehe, mein Engel soll vor dir hergehen. Ich werde aber ihre Sünde heimsuchen, wenn meine Zeit heimzusuchen gekommen ist. (2Mo 33,2; 2Mo 33,14; 4Mo 14,27) 35 Und der HERR schlug das Volk, weil sie sich das Kalb gemacht hatten, das Aaron angefertigt hatte.

Israel worships a golden calf

1 The people saw that Moses took a long time to come down from the mountain. So they gathered around Aaron. They said to him, ‘Come. Make us a god that will lead us. This fellow Moses brought us up out of Egypt. But we don’t know what has happened to him.’ 2 Aaron answered them, ‘Take the gold earrings off your wives, your sons and your daughters. Bring the earrings to me.’ 3 So all the people took off their earrings. They brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they gave him and made it into a metal statue of a god. It looked like a calf. Aaron shaped it with a tool. Then the people said, ‘Israel, here is your god who brought you up out of Egypt.’ 5 When Aaron saw what they were doing, he built an altar in front of the calf. He said, ‘Tomorrow will be a feast day to honour the LORD.’ 6 So the next day the people got up early. They sacrificed burnt offerings and brought friendship offerings. They sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance wildly in front of their god. 7 The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, ‘Go down. Your people you brought up out of Egypt have become very sinful. 8 They have quickly turned away from what I commanded them. They have made themselves a metal statue of a god in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down and sacrificed to it. And they have said, “Israel, here is your god who brought you up out of Egypt.” 9 ‘I have seen these people,’ the LORD said to Moses. ‘They are stubborn. 10 Now leave me alone. I will destroy them because of my great anger. Then I will make you into a great nation.’ 11 But Moses asked the LORD his God to have mercy on the people. ‘LORD,’ he said, ‘why should you destroy your people in anger? You used your great power and mighty hand to bring them out of Egypt. 12 Why should the Egyptians say, “He brought them out to hurt them. He wanted to kill them in the mountains. He wanted to wipe them off the face of the earth”? Turn away from your great anger. Please take pity on your people. Don’t destroy them! 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel. You made a promise to them in your own name. You said, “I will make your children after you as many as the stars in the sky. I will give them all this land I promised them. It will belong to them for ever.” ’ 14 Then the LORD took pity on his people. He didn’t destroy them as he had said he would. 15 Moses turned and went down the mountain. He had the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. Words were written on both sides of the tablets, front and back. 16 The tablets were the work of God. The words had been written by God. They had been carved on the tablets. 17 Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting. So he said to Moses, ‘It sounds like war in the camp.’ 18 Moses replied, ‘It’s not the sound of winning. It’s not the sound of losing. It’s the sound of singing that I hear.’ 19 As Moses approached the camp, he saw the calf. He also saw the people dancing. So he was very angry. He threw the tablets out of his hands. They broke into pieces at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf the people had made. He burned it in the fire. Then he ground it into powder. He scattered it on the water. And he made the Israelites drink it. 21 He said to Aaron, ‘What did these people do to you? How did they make you lead them into such terrible sin?’ 22 ‘Please don’t be angry,’ Aaron answered. ‘You know how these people like to do what is evil. 23 They said to me, “Make us a god that will lead us. This fellow Moses brought us up out of Egypt. But we don’t know what has happened to him.” 24 So I told them, “Anyone who has any gold jewellery, take it off.” They gave me the gold. I threw it into the fire. And out came this calf!’ 25 Moses saw that the people were running wild. Aaron had let them get out of control. The people had become a joke to their enemies. 26 Moses stood at the entrance to the camp. He said, ‘Anyone on the LORD’s side, come to me.’ All the Levites joined him. 27 Then he spoke to them. He said, ‘The LORD, the God of Israel, says, “Each man must put on his sword. Then he must go to and fro through the camp from one end to the other. Each man must kill his brother and friend and neighbour.” ’ 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded. About 3,000 of the people died that day. 29 Then Moses said to the Levites, ‘You have been set apart for the LORD today. You fought against your own sons and brothers. And he has blessed you this day.’ 30 The next day Moses said to the people, ‘You have committed a terrible sin. But now I will go up to the LORD. Maybe if I pray to him, he will forgive your sin.’ 31 So Moses went back to the LORD. He said, ‘These people have committed a terrible sin. They have made a god out of gold for themselves. 32 Now please forgive their sin. But if you won’t, then erase my name from the book you have written.’ 33 The LORD replied to Moses. The LORD said, ‘I will erase from my book only the names of those who have sinned against me. 34 Now go. Lead the people to the place I spoke about. My angel will go ahead of you. But when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.’ 35 The LORD struck the people with a plague. That’s because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.
