1Und Gott sprach zu Jakob: Mach dich auf und zieh nach Bethel und wohne daselbst und errichte dort einen Altar dem Gott, der dir erschien, als du flohst vor deinem Bruder Esau. (1Mo 28,11; 1Mo 31,13)2Da sprach Jakob zu seinem Hause und zu allen, die mit ihm waren: Tut von euch die fremden Götter, die unter euch sind, und reinigt euch und wechselt eure Kleider, (1Mo 31,19; 5Mo 27,15; Jos 24,23)3und lasst uns aufbrechen und nach Bethel ziehen, dass ich dort einen Altar errichte dem Gott, der mich erhört hat zur Zeit meiner Trübsal und mit mir gewesen ist auf dem Wege, den ich gezogen bin.4Da gaben sie ihm alle fremden Götter, die in ihren Händen waren, und ihre Ohrringe, und er vergrub sie unter der Eiche, die bei Sichem stand. (Jos 24,26; Ri 9,6)5Und sie brachen auf. Und es kam ein Gottesschrecken über die Städte, die um sie her lagen, sodass sie den Söhnen Jakobs nicht nachjagten. (2Mo 23,27; Jos 10,10)6So kam Jakob nach Lus im Lande Kanaan, das nun Bethel heißt, samt all dem Volk, das mit ihm war,7und er baute dort einen Altar und nannte die Stätte El-Bethel, weil Gott sich ihm daselbst offenbart hatte, als er vor seinem Bruder floh.8Da starb Debora, die Amme der Rebekka, und wurde begraben unterhalb von Bethel unter der Eiche; die wurde genannt die Klageeiche. (1Mo 24,59)9Und Gott erschien Jakob abermals, nachdem er aus Paddan-Aram gekommen war, und segnete ihn10und sprach zu ihm: Du heißt Jakob; aber du sollst nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern Israel sollst du heißen. Und so nannte er ihn Israel. (1Mo 32,29)11Und Gott sprach zu ihm: Ich bin der allmächtige Gott; sei fruchtbar und mehre dich! Ein Volk und eine Menge von Völkern sollen von dir kommen, und Könige sollen aus deinen Lenden hervorgehen, (1Mo 17,1; 1Mo 17,6; 1Mo 28,3)12und das Land, das ich Abraham und Isaak gegeben habe, will ich dir geben und will’s deinem Geschlecht nach dir geben.13Und Gott fuhr auf von ihm an der Stätte, da er mit ihm geredet hatte.14Jakob aber richtete ein steinernes Mal auf an der Stätte, da er mit ihm geredet hatte, und goss Trankopfer darauf und begoss es mit Öl. (1Mo 28,18)15Und Jakob nannte die Stätte, da Gott mit ihm geredet hatte, Bethel.
Benjamins Geburt und Rahels Tod
16Und sie brachen auf von Bethel. Und als es noch eine Strecke Weges war bis Efrata, da gebar Rahel. Und es kam sie hart an über der Geburt.17Da ihr aber die Geburt so schwer wurde, sprach die Hebamme zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, denn auch diesmal wirst du einen Sohn haben. (1Mo 30,24)18Als ihr aber das Leben entwich und sie sterben musste, nannte sie ihn Ben-Oni, aber sein Vater nannte ihn Ben-Jamin[1].19So starb Rahel und wurde begraben an dem Wege nach Efrata, das nun Bethlehem heißt. (1Mo 48,7; 1Sam 10,2; Jer 31,15; Mi 5,1; Mt 2,18)20Und Jakob richtete einen Stein auf über ihrem Grab; das ist das Grabmal Rahels bis auf diesen Tag.21Und Israel zog weiter und schlug sein Zelt auf jenseits von Migdal-Eder.
Jakobs Söhne
22Und es begab sich, als Israel im Lande wohnte, ging Ruben hin und schlief bei Bilha, seines Vaters Nebenfrau. Und das kam vor Israel. Es hatte aber Jakob zwölf Söhne. (1Mo 49,4; 1Chr 2,1)23Die Söhne Leas waren diese: Ruben, der erstgeborene Sohn Jakobs, Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar und Sebulon.24Die Söhne Rahels waren: Josef und Benjamin.25Die Söhne Bilhas, Rahels Magd: Dan und Naftali.26Die Söhne Silpas, Leas Magd: Gad und Asser. Das sind die Söhne Jakobs, die ihm geboren sind in Paddan-Aram.
Jakobs Heimkehr. Isaaks Tod
27Und Jakob kam zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mamre, nach Kirjat-Arba, das ist Hebron, wo Abraham und Isaak als Fremdlinge gelebt hatten.28Und Isaak wurde hundertachtzig Jahre alt,29verschied und starb und wurde versammelt zu seinen Vätern, alt und lebenssatt. Und seine Söhne Esau und Jakob begruben ihn.
1Then God said to Jacob, ‘Go up to Bethel and live there. Build an altar there to honour me. That’s where I appeared to you when you were running away from your brother Esau.’2So Jacob spoke to his family and to everyone with him. He said, ‘Get rid of the statues of false gods you have with you. Make yourselves pure by washing and changing your clothes.3Come, let’s go up to Bethel. There I’ll build an altar to honour God. He answered me when I was in trouble. He’s been with me everywhere I’ve gone.’4So they gave Jacob all the statues of false gods they had. They also gave him their earrings. Jacob buried those things under the oak tree at Shechem.5Then Jacob and everyone with him started out. The terror of God fell on the towns all around them. So no one chased them.6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz. Luz is also called Bethel. It’s in the land of Canaan.7Jacob built an altar at Luz. He named the place El Bethel. There God made himself known to Jacob when he was running away from his brother.8Rebekah’s attendant Deborah died. They buried her body under the oak tree outside Bethel. So it was called Allon Bakuth.9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again. And God blessed him.10God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob. But you will not be called Jacob anymore. Your name will be Israel.’ So he named him Israel.11God said to him, ‘I am the Mighty God. Have children so that there will be many of you. You will become the father of a nation and a community of nations. Your later family will include kings.12I am giving you the land I gave to Abraham and Isaac. I will also give it to your children after you.’13Then God left him at the place where he had talked with him.14Jacob set up a sacred stone at the place where God had talked with him. He poured out a drink offering on it. He also poured olive oil on it.15Jacob named the place Bethel. That’s where God had talked with him.
Rachel and Isaac die
16They moved on from Bethel. Ephrath wasn’t very far away when Rachel began to have a baby. She was having a very hard time of it.17The woman who helped her saw that she was having problems. So she said to Rachel, ‘Don’t be afraid. You have another son.’18But Rachel was dying. As she took her last breath, she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.19So Rachel died. She was buried beside the road to Ephrath. Ephrath was also called Bethlehem.20Jacob set up a stone marker over her tomb. To this day, the stone marks the place where Rachel was buried.21Israel moved on again. He set up his tent beyond Migdal Eder.22While Israel was living in that area, Reuben went in and slept with Bilhah. She was the concubine of Reuben’s father. And Israel heard about it. Here are the 12 sons Jacob had.23Leah was the mother of Reuben, Jacob’s eldest son. Her other sons were Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.24The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.25The sons of Rachel’s female servant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.26The sons of Leah’s female servant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These were Jacob’s sons. They were born in Paddan Aram.27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre. Mamre is near Kiriath Arba, where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. The place is also called Hebron.28Isaac lived 180 years.29Then he took his last breath and died. He was very old when he joined the members of his family who had already died. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
