Der Mensch unter dem Gesetz
7Was wollen wir hierzu sagen? Ist das Gesetz Sünde? Das sei ferne! Aber die Sünde erkannte ich nicht außer durchs Gesetz. Denn ich wüsste nichts von der Begierde, wenn das Gesetz nicht gesagt hätte: »Du sollst nicht begehren!« (2Mo 20,17)8Die Sünde aber nahm das Gebot zum Anlass und erregte in mir Begierden jeder Art; denn ohne das Gesetz war die Sünde tot. (Röm 5,13; 1Kor 15,56)9Ich lebte einst ohne Gesetz; als aber das Gebot kam, wurde die Sünde lebendig,10ich aber starb. Und so fand sich’s, dass das Gebot mir den Tod brachte, das doch zum Leben gegeben war. (3Mo 18,5)11Denn die Sünde nahm das Gebot zum Anlass und betrog mich und tötete mich durch das Gebot. (Hebr 3,13)12So ist also das Gesetz heilig, und das Gebot ist heilig, gerecht und gut. (1Tim 1,8)13Ist dann, was doch gut ist, mir zum Tod geworden? Das sei ferne! Sondern die Sünde, auf dass sie als Sünde sichtbar werde, hat mir durch das Gute den Tod gebracht, auf dass die Sünde über alle Maßen sündig werde durchs Gebot. L’affrancamento del cristiano dalla legge
1O ignorate forse, fratelli (poiché parlo a persone che hanno conoscenza della legge), che la legge ha potere sull’uomo per tutto il tempo che egli vive?2Infatti la donna sposata è legata per legge al marito mentre egli vive; ma se il marito muore, è sciolta dalla legge che la lega al marito.3Perciò, se lei diventa moglie di un altro uomo mentre il marito vive, sarà chiamata adultera; ma se il marito muore, ella è libera da quella legge; così non è adultera se diventa moglie di un altro uomo.4Così, fratelli miei, anche voi siete stati messi a morte quanto alla legge mediante il corpo di Cristo, per appartenere a un altro, cioè a colui che è risuscitato dai morti, affinché portiamo frutto a Dio.5Infatti, mentre eravamo nella carne, le passioni peccaminose, risvegliate dalla legge, agivano nelle nostre membra allo scopo di portare frutto per la morte;6ma ora siamo stati sciolti dai legami della legge, essendo morti a quella che ci teneva soggetti, per servire nel nuovo regime dello Spirito e non in quello vecchio della lettera.
Il ruolo della legge
7Che cosa diremo dunque? La legge è peccato? No di certo! Anzi, io non avrei conosciuto il peccato se non per mezzo della legge; poiché non avrei conosciuto la concupiscenza, se la legge non avesse detto: «Non concupire[1]».8Ma il peccato, còlta l’occasione per mezzo del comandamento, produsse in me ogni concupiscenza; perché senza la legge il peccato è morto.9Un tempo io vivevo senza legge; ma, venuto il comandamento, il peccato prese vita e io morii;10e il comandamento, che avrebbe dovuto darmi vita, risultò che mi condannava a morte.11Perché il peccato, còlta l’occasione per mezzo del comandamento, mi trasse in inganno e, per mezzo di esso, mi uccise.12Così la legge è santa, e il comandamento è santo, giusto e buono.13Ciò che è buono[2] diventò dunque per me morte? No di certo! È invece il peccato che mi è diventato morte, perché si rivelasse come peccato, causandomi la morte mediante ciò che è buono; affinché, per mezzo del comandamento, il peccato diventasse estremamente peccante.
La legge del peccato
14Sappiamo infatti che la legge è spirituale; ma io sono carnale, venduto schiavo al peccato.15Poiché ciò che faccio io non lo capisco: infatti non faccio quello che voglio, ma faccio quello che odio.16Ora, se faccio quello che non voglio, ammetto che la legge è buona;17allora non sono più io che lo faccio, ma è il peccato che abita in me.18Difatti io so che in me, cioè nella mia carne, non abita alcun bene; poiché in me si trova il volere, ma il modo di compiere il bene, no.19Infatti il bene che voglio, non lo faccio; ma il male che non voglio, quello faccio.20Ora, se io faccio ciò che non voglio, non sono più io che lo compio, ma è il peccato che abita in me.21Mi trovo dunque sotto questa legge: quando voglio fare il bene, il male si trova in me.22Infatti io mi compiaccio della legge di Dio, secondo l’uomo interiore,23ma vedo un’altra legge nelle mie membra, che combatte contro la legge della mia mente e mi rende prigioniero della legge del peccato che è nelle mie membra.24Me infelice! Chi mi libererà da questo corpo di morte?25Grazie siano rese a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore. Così, dunque, io con la mente servo la legge di Dio, ma con la carne la legge del peccato.
1Hermanos, les hablo como a quienes conocen la ley. ¿Acaso no saben que uno está sujeto a la ley solamente en vida?2Por ejemplo, la casada está ligada por ley a su esposo sólo mientras éste vive; pero si su esposo muere, ella queda libre de la ley que la unía a su esposo.3Por eso, si se casa con otro hombre mientras su esposo vive, se le considera adúltera. Pero si muere su esposo, ella queda libre de esa ley, y no es adúltera aunque se case con otro hombre.4Así mismo, hermanos míos, ustedes murieron a la ley mediante el cuerpo crucificado de Cristo, a fin de pertenecer al que fue levantado de entre los muertos. De este modo daremos fruto para Dios.5Porque cuando nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa aún nos dominaba,[1] las malas pasiones que la ley nos despertaba actuaban en los miembros de nuestro cuerpo, y dábamos fruto para muerte.6Pero ahora, al morir a lo que nos tenía subyugados, hemos quedado libres de la ley, a fin de servir a Dios con el nuevo poder que nos da el Espíritu, y no por medio del antiguo mandamiento escrito.
Conflicto con el pecado
7¿Qué concluiremos? ¿Que la ley es pecado? ¡De ninguna manera! Sin embargo, si no fuera por la ley, no me habría dado cuenta de lo que es el pecado. Por ejemplo, nunca habría sabido yo lo que es codiciar si la ley no hubiera dicho: «No codicies.»[2]8Pero el pecado, aprovechando la oportunidad que le proporcionó el mandamiento, despertó en mí toda clase de codicia. Porque aparte de la ley el pecado está muerto.9En otro tiempo yo tenía vida aparte de la ley; pero cuando vino el mandamiento, cobró vida el pecado y yo morí.10Se me hizo evidente que el mismo mandamiento que debía haberme dado vida me llevó a la muerte;11porque el pecado se aprovechó del mandamiento, me engañó, y por medio de él me mató.12Concluimos, pues, que la ley es santa, y que el mandamiento es santo, justo y bueno.13Pero entonces, ¿lo que es bueno se convirtió en muerte para mí? ¡De ninguna manera! Más bien fue el pecado lo que, valiéndose de lo bueno, me produjo la muerte; ocurrió así para que el pecado se manifestara claramente, o sea, para que mediante el mandamiento se demostrara lo extremadamente malo que es el pecado.14Sabemos, en efecto, que la ley es espiritual. Pero yo soy meramente humano, y estoy vendido como esclavo al pecado.15No entiendo lo que me pasa, pues no hago lo que quiero, sino lo que aborrezco.16Ahora bien, si hago lo que no quiero, estoy de acuerdo en que la ley es buena;17pero, en ese caso, ya no soy yo quien lo lleva a cabo sino el pecado que habita en mí.18Yo sé que en mí, es decir, en mi naturaleza pecaminosa, nada bueno habita. Aunque deseo hacer lo bueno, no soy capaz de hacerlo.19De hecho, no hago el bien que quiero, sino el mal que no quiero.20Y si hago lo que no quiero, ya no soy yo quien lo hace sino el pecado que habita en mí.21Así que descubro esta ley: que cuando quiero hacer el bien, me acompaña el mal.22Porque en lo íntimo de mi ser me deleito en la ley de Dios;23pero me doy cuenta de que en los miembros de mi cuerpo hay otra ley, que es la ley del pecado. Esta ley lucha contra la ley de mi mente, y me tiene cautivo.24¡Soy un pobre miserable! ¿Quién me librará de este cuerpo mortal?25¡Gracias a Dios por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor! En conclusión, con la mente yo mismo me someto a la ley de Dios, pero mi naturaleza pecaminosa está sujeta a la ley del pecado.
