1 Als nun alle Könige der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordans nach Westen zu wohnten, und alle Könige der Kanaaniter am Meer hörten, wie der HERR das Wasser des Jordans ausgetrocknet hatte vor den Israeliten, bis sie hinübergegangen waren, da verzagte ihr Herz, und der Mut verließ sie beim Anblick der Israeliten. (Jos 2,24) 

Beschneidung. Feier des Passa in Kanaan

2 Zu der Zeit sprach der HERR zu Josua: Mache dir steinerne Messer und beschneide die Israeliten wie schon früher. (1Mo 17,12; 2Mo 4,25) 

3 Da machte sich Josua steinerne Messer und beschnitt die Israeliten auf dem Hügel der Vorhäute. 

4 Und das ist der Grund, warum Josua sie beschnitten hat: Das ganze Volk, das aus Ägypten gezogen war, die Männer, alle Kriegsleute, waren unterwegs in der Wüste gestorben, als sie aus Ägypten zogen. 

5 Denn das ganze Volk, das auszog, war beschnitten gewesen; aber das ganze Volk, das unterwegs in der Wüste geboren war, als sie aus Ägypten zogen, das war nicht beschnitten. 

6 Denn die Israeliten wanderten vierzig Jahre in der Wüste, bis es mit dem ganzen Volk, den Kriegsmännern, die aus Ägypten gezogen waren, zu Ende gegangen war, weil sie der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorcht hatten; wie denn der HERR ihnen geschworen hatte, sie sollten das Land nicht sehen, das der HERR, wie er ihren Vätern geschworen hatte, uns geben wollte, ein Land, darin Milch und Honig fließt. (4Mo 14,22) 

7 Ihre Söhne, die er an ihrer statt hatte aufwachsen lassen, beschnitt Josua; denn sie waren noch unbeschnitten und unterwegs nicht beschnitten worden. 

8 Und als das ganze Volk beschnitten war, blieben sie an ihrem Ort im Lager, bis sie genesen waren. 

9 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Heute habe ich die Schande Ägyptens von euch abgewälzt. Und diese Stätte wurde Gilgal genannt bis auf diesen Tag. (Jos 4,19) 

10 Und als die Israeliten in Gilgal das Lager aufgeschlagen hatten, hielten sie Passa am vierzehnten Tage des Monats am Abend im Jordantal von Jericho (2Mo 12,6; 2Mo 12,39; 3Mo 23,14) 

11 und aßen vom Getreide des Landes am Tag nach dem Passa, nämlich ungesäuertes Brot und geröstete Körner, an ebendiesem Tage. 

12 Und das Manna hörte auf am andern Morgen, als sie vom Getreide des Landes aßen. Seither hatten die Israeliten kein Manna mehr, sondern aßen von der Ernte des Landes Kanaan in diesem Jahr. (2Mo 16,35) 

Der Fürst über das Heer des Herrn

13 Und es begab sich, als Josua bei Jericho war, dass er seine Augen aufhob und gewahr wurde, dass ein Mann ihm gegenüberstand und ein bloßes Schwert in seiner Hand hatte. Und Josua ging zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Gehörst du zu uns oder zu unsern Feinden? (4Mo 22,23; 4Mo 22,31) 

14 Er sprach: Nein, sondern ich bin der Fürst über das Heer des HERRN und bin jetzt gekommen. Da fiel Josua auf sein Angesicht zur Erde nieder, betete an und sprach zu ihm: Was sagt mein Herr seinem Knecht? 

15 Und der Fürst über das Heer des HERRN sprach zu Josua: Zieh deine Schuhe von deinen Füßen; denn die Stätte, darauf du stehst, ist heilig. Und so tat Josua. (2Mo 3,5)

1 Und es geschah, als alle Könige der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordan im Westen, und alle Könige der Kanaaniter, die am Meer wohnten, hörten, dass der HERR das Wasser des Jordan vor den Söhnen Israel hatte vertrocknen lassen, bis wir hinübergezogen waren, da zerschmolz ihr Herz, und es war kein Mut mehr in ihnen vor den Söhnen Israel. (4Mo 13,29; Jos 2,9; Jos 3,17) 

Beschneidung Israels und Passahfeier in Gilgal

2 In jener Zeit sprach der HERR zu Josua: Mache dir steinerne Messer und wiederhole die Beschneidung an den Söhnen Israel! (1Mo 17,10; 1Mo 23,1) 

3 Da machte sich Josua steinerne Messer und beschnitt die Söhne Israel am Hügel Aralot. 

4 Und dies ist der Grund, warum Josua ⟨sie⟩ beschnitt: Alles Volk männlichen Geschlechts, das aus Ägypten gezogen war, alle Kriegsleute waren unterwegs in der Wüste gestorben bei ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten. (4Mo 26,64) 

5 Denn das ganze Volk, das auszog, war beschnitten gewesen; aber das ganze Volk, das in der Wüste unterwegs bei ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten geboren worden war, hatte man nicht beschnitten. 

6 Denn die Söhne Israel wanderten vierzig Jahre in der Wüste, bis die ganze Nation umgekommen war – die Kriegsleute, die aus Ägypten ausgezogen waren –, weil sie nicht auf die Stimme des HERRN gehört hatten ⟨und⟩ weil der HERR ihnen geschworen hatte, sie das Land nicht sehen zu lassen, das der HERR ihren Vätern geschworen hatte, uns zu geben, ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt. (2Mo 3,8; 4Mo 14,33; Jos 1,6; Jos 24,7; Hebr 3,11) 

7 Und ihre Söhne hatte er statt ihrer aufkommen lassen. Diese ⟨nun⟩ beschnitt Josua; denn sie waren unbeschnitten, weil man sie unterwegs nicht beschnitten hatte. (5Mo 1,39) 

8 Und es geschah, als die ganze Nation vollständig beschnitten war, da blieben sie an ihrem Ort im Lager, bis sie genesen waren. (1Mo 34,25) 

9 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Heute habe ich die Schande Ägyptens von euch abgewälzt. Daher nennt man diesen Ort Gilgal bis zum heutigen Tag. (1Mo 34,14; Jos 4,19; 1Sam 7,16; Hos 4,15; Am 5,5; Mi 6,5) 

10 Und die Söhne Israel lagerten in Gilgal. Und sie feierten das Passah am vierzehnten Tag des Monats, am Abend, in den Steppen von Jericho. (2Mo 12,6) 

11 Und sie aßen von dem Ertrag des Landes am Tag nach dem Passah, ungesäuertes Brot und geröstete Körner, an ebendiesem Tag. (2Mo 13,6) 

12 Das Man aber hörte auf am folgenden Tag, als sie von dem Ertrag des Landes aßen, und es gab für die Söhne Israel ⟨künftig⟩ kein Man mehr. Und sie aßen von der Ernte des Landes Kanaan in jenem Jahr. (2Mo 16,35) 

Der Anführer des Heeres des HERRN begegnet Josua

13 Und es geschah, als Josua bei Jericho war, da erhob er seine Augen und sah: und siehe, ein Mann stand ihm gegenüber, und sein Schwert war gezückt in seiner Hand. Da ging Josua auf ihn zu und sagte zu ihm: Gehörst du zu uns oder zu unseren Feinden? (1Mo 18,2; 4Mo 22,23) 

14 Und er sprach: Nein, sondern ich bin der Oberste des Heeres des HERRN; ⟨gerade⟩ jetzt bin ich gekommen. Da fiel Josua auf sein Angesicht zur Erde und huldigte ihm und sagte zu ihm: Was redet mein Herr zu seinem Knecht? (2Mo 23,20; 4Mo 22,31; 1Sam 3,9; 2Sam 7,19; Hes 3,23; Dan 8,11; Mt 2,11; Mt 28,9; Joh 9,38; Röm 8,31; 1Kor 15,57) 

15 Da sprach der Oberste des Heeres des HERRN zu Josua: Zieh deine Schuhe von deinen Füßen; denn der Ort, auf dem du stehst, ist heilig! Und Josua tat es. (2Mo 3,5)

1 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites. 

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.’ 

3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth. 

4 Now this is why he did so: all those who came out of Egypt – all the men of military age – died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. 

5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 

6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness for forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land that he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 

7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 

8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed. 

9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.’ So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. 

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 

11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 

12 The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan. 

The fall of Jericho

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’ 

14 ‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ Then Joshua fell face down to the ground in reverence, and asked him, ‘What message does my Lord have for his servant?’ 

15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.’ And Joshua did so.

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel. 

2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time. 

3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. 

4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. 

5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised. 

6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey. 

7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way. 

8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. 

9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day. 

10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. 

11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day. 

12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. 

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? 

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 

15 And the captain of the LORD' host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
