Der Beginn der ersten Missionsreise

1 Es waren aber in Antiochia in der Gemeinde Propheten und Lehrer, nämlich Barnabas und Simeon, genannt Niger, und Luzius von Kyrene und Manaën, der mit dem Landesfürsten Herodes erzogen worden war, und Saulus. (Apg 11,27; 1Kor 12,28) 

2 Als sie aber Gottesdienst hielten und fasteten, sprach der Heilige Geist: Sondert mir aus Barnabas und Saulus zu dem Werk, zu dem ich sie berufen habe. (Apg 9,15) 

3 Da fasteten sie und beteten und legten ihnen die Hände auf und ließen sie ziehen. (Apg 6,6) 

Auf der Insel Zypern

4 Nachdem sie nun ausgesandt waren vom Heiligen Geist, kamen sie nach Seleukia und von da zu Schiff nach Zypern. 

5 Und als sie in die Stadt Salamis kamen, verkündigten sie das Wort Gottes in den Synagogen der Juden; sie hatten aber auch Johannes als Gehilfen bei sich. (Apg 12,12; Apg 12,25) 

6 Als sie die ganze Insel bis nach Paphos durchzogen hatten, trafen sie einen Zauberer und falschen Propheten, einen Juden, der hieß Barjesus; 

7 der war bei dem Statthalter Sergius Paulus, einem verständigen Mann. Dieser rief Barnabas und Saulus zu sich und begehrte, das Wort Gottes zu hören. 

8 Da widerstand ihnen der Zauberer Elymas – denn so wird sein Name übersetzt – und versuchte, den Statthalter vom Glauben abzuhalten. 

9 Saulus aber, der auch Paulus heißt, voll Heiligen Geistes, sah ihn an 

10 und sprach: Du Sohn des Teufels, voll aller List und aller Bosheit, du Feind aller Gerechtigkeit, hörst du nicht auf, krumm zu machen die geraden Wege des Herrn? 

11 Und nun siehe, die Hand des Herrn kommt über dich, und du sollst blind sein und die Sonne eine Zeit lang nicht sehen! Auf der Stelle fiel Dunkelheit und Finsternis auf ihn, und er ging umher und suchte jemanden, der ihn an der Hand führte. 

12 Als der Statthalter sah, was geschehen war, wurde er gläubig und verwunderte sich über die Lehre des Herrn. 

In Antiochia in Pisidien

13 Paulus aber und die um ihn waren, fuhren von Paphos ab und kamen nach Perge in Pamphylien. Johannes aber trennte sich von ihnen und kehrte zurück nach Jerusalem. (Apg 12,12; Apg 15,38) 

14 Sie aber zogen von Perge weiter und kamen nach Antiochia in Pisidien und gingen am Sabbat in die Synagoge und setzten sich. 

15 Nach der Lesung aber des Gesetzes und der Propheten schickten die Vorsteher der Synagoge zu ihnen und ließen ihnen sagen: Ihr Männer, liebe Brüder, wollt ihr etwas reden und das Volk ermahnen, so sagt es. (Apg 15,21) 

16 Da stand Paulus auf und winkte mit der Hand und sprach: Ihr Männer von Israel und ihr Gottesfürchtigen, hört zu! 

17 Der Gott dieses Volkes Israel hat unsre Väter erwählt und das Volk groß gemacht in der Fremde, im Lande Ägypten, und mit starkem Arm führte er sie von dort heraus. (2Mo 12,37; 2Mo 12,40; 2Mo 14,8) 

18 Und vierzig Jahre lang trug er sie in der Wüste (4Mo 14,34; Ps 106,13) 

19 und vernichtete sieben Völker in dem Land Kanaan und gab ihnen deren Land zum Erbe, (5Mo 7,1; Jos 14,2) 

20 für etwa vierhundertfünfzig Jahre. Danach gab er ihnen Richter bis zum Propheten Samuel. (Ri 2,16; 1Sam 3,20) 

21 Und von da an baten sie um einen König; und Gott gab ihnen Saul, den Sohn des Kisch, einen Mann aus dem Stamm Benjamin, für vierzig Jahre. (1Sam 8,5; 1Sam 10,21) 

22 Und als er diesen verworfen hatte, erhob er David zu ihrem König, von dem er bezeugte: »Ich habe David gefunden, den Sohn Isais, einen Mann nach meinem Herzen, der soll meinen ganzen Willen tun.« (1Sam 16,13; Ps 89,21) 

23 Aus dessen Geschlecht hat Gott, wie er verheißen hat, Jesus kommen lassen als Heiland für das Volk Israel, (2Sam 7,12; Jes 11,1; Lk 16,16) 

24 nachdem Johannes, bevor Jesus auftrat, dem ganzen Volk Israel die Taufe der Buße gepredigt hatte. (Lk 3,3; Apg 19,4) 

25 Als aber Johannes seinen Lauf vollendete, sprach er: Ich bin nicht der, für den ihr mich haltet; aber siehe, er kommt nach mir, dessen Schuhriemen zu lösen ich nicht wert bin. (Lk 3,16; Joh 1,20; Joh 1,27) 

26 Ihr Männer, liebe Brüder, ihr Söhne aus dem Geschlecht Abrahams und ihr Gottesfürchtigen, uns ist das Wort dieses Heils gesandt. 

27 Denn die Einwohner von Jerusalem und ihre Oberen haben, weil sie Jesus nicht erkannten, die Worte der Propheten, die an jedem Sabbat vorgelesen werden, mit ihrem Urteil erfüllt. (Lk 23,34; Joh 16,3) 

28 Und obwohl sie nichts an ihm fanden, das den Tod verdient hätte, baten sie doch Pilatus, ihn zu töten. (Lk 23,22) 

29 Und als sie alles vollendet hatten, was von ihm geschrieben steht, nahmen sie ihn von dem Holz und legten ihn in ein Grab. (Lk 23,52) 

30 Aber Gott hat ihn auferweckt von den Toten; (Apg 3,15) 

31 und er ist an vielen Tagen denen erschienen, die mit ihm von Galiläa hinauf nach Jerusalem gegangen waren; die sind jetzt seine Zeugen vor dem Volk. (Apg 1,3; Apg 1,22) 

32 Und wir verkündigen euch die Verheißung, die an die Väter ergangen ist, 

33 dass Gott sie uns, ihren Kindern, erfüllt hat, indem er Jesus auferweckte; wie denn im zweiten Psalm geschrieben steht: »Du bist mein Sohn, heute habe ich dich gezeugt.« 

34 Dass er ihn aber von den Toten auferweckt hat und ihn nicht der Verwesung überlassen wollte, hat er so gesagt: »Ich will euch die Gnade, die David verheißen ist, treu bewahren.« (Apg 2,27) 

35 Darum sagt er auch an einer andern Stelle: »Du wirst nicht zugeben, dass dein Heiliger die Verwesung sehe.« 

36 Denn nachdem David den Menschen seiner Zeit gedient hatte, ist er nach dem Willen Gottes entschlafen und zu seinen Vätern versammelt worden und hat die Verwesung gesehen. 

37 Der aber, den Gott auferweckt hat, der hat die Verwesung nicht gesehen. 

38 So sei euch nun kundgetan, ihr Männer, liebe Brüder, dass euch durch ihn Vergebung der Sünden verkündigt wird; und in all dem, worin ihr durch das Gesetz des Mose nicht gerecht werden konntet, (Apg 10,43; Röm 8,3) 

39 ist der gerecht gemacht, der an ihn glaubt. (Röm 10,4; Gal 2,16) 

40 Seht nun zu, dass nicht über euch komme, was in den Propheten gesagt ist: 

41 »Seht, ihr Verächter, und wundert euch und werdet zunichte! Denn ich tue ein Werk zu euren Zeiten, das ihr nicht glauben werdet, wenn es euch jemand erzählt.« 

42 Als sie aber hinausgingen, baten die Leute, dass sie am nächsten Sabbat noch einmal von diesen Dingen redeten. 

43 Und als die Versammlung auseinanderging, folgten viele Juden und fromme Proselyten Paulus und Barnabas. Diese sprachen mit ihnen und ermahnten sie, dass sie bleiben sollten in der Gnade Gottes. 

44 Am folgenden Sabbat aber kam fast die ganze Stadt zusammen, das Wort Gottes zu hören. 

45 Als aber die Juden die Menge sahen, wurden sie neidisch und widersprachen dem, was Paulus sagte, und lästerten. 

46 Paulus und Barnabas aber sprachen frei und offen: Euch musste das Wort Gottes zuerst gesagt werden; da ihr es aber von euch stoßt und achtet euch selbst nicht wert des ewigen Lebens, siehe, so wenden wir uns zu den Heiden. (Mt 10,5; Lk 9,3; Apg 3,25) 

47 Denn so hat uns der Herr geboten: »Ich habe dich zum Licht der Heiden gemacht, dass du das Heil seist bis an das Ende der Erde.« (Lk 2,32) 

48 Als das die Heiden hörten, wurden sie froh und priesen das Wort des Herrn, und alle wurden gläubig, die zum ewigen Leben bestimmt waren. (Röm 8,29) 

49 Und das Wort des Herrn breitete sich aus in der ganzen Gegend. 

50 Aber die Juden hetzten die gottesfürchtigen vornehmen Frauen und die Oberen der Stadt auf und stifteten eine Verfolgung an gegen Paulus und Barnabas und vertrieben sie aus ihrem Gebiet. (2Tim 3,11) 

51 Sie aber schüttelten den Staub von ihren Füßen zum Zeugnis gegen sie und kamen nach Ikonion. (Lk 9,5; Lk 10,10; Apg 18,6) 

52 Die Jünger aber wurden erfüllt von Freude und Heiligem Geist.

1 Es waren aber in Antiochia, in der dortigen Gemeinde, Propheten und Lehrer: Barnabas und Simeon, genannt Niger, und Luzius von Kyrene und Manaën, der mit Herodes, dem Vierfürsten, auferzogen worden war, und Saulus. (Mt 14,1; Apg 4,36; Apg 11,27; Eph 4,11) 

2 Während sie aber dem Herrn dienten und fasteten, sprach der Heilige Geist: Sondert mir nun Barnabas und Saulus zu dem Werk aus, zu dem ich sie berufen habe! (Apg 9,15; Röm 1,1; 1Tim 1,12; 1Tim 2,7) 

3 Da fasteten und beteten sie; und als sie ihnen die Hände aufgelegt hatten, entließen sie sie. (Apg 6,6; Apg 14,26) 

Barnabas und Paulus auf Zypern

4 Sie nun, ausgesandt von dem Heiligen Geist, gingen hinab nach Seleuzia, und von dort segelten sie nach Zypern. 

5 Und als sie in Salamis waren, verkündigten sie das Wort Gottes in den Synagogen der Juden. Sie hatten aber auch Johannes zum Diener. (Apg 12,12; Apg 13,13; Apg 14,1; Apg 17,1; Apg 18,4; Apg 19,8) 

6 Als sie aber die ganze Insel bis Paphos durchzogen hatten, fanden sie einen Mann, einen Magier, einen falschen Propheten, einen Juden, mit Namen Barjesus, 

7 der bei dem Prokonsul Sergius Paulus war, einem verständigen Mann. Dieser rief Barnabas und Saulus herbei und begehrte das Wort Gottes zu hören. 

8 Elymas aber, der Magier – denn so wird sein Name übersetzt –, widerstand ihnen und suchte den Prokonsul vom Glauben abzubringen. (Apg 8,9; 2Tim 3,8) 

9 Saulus aber, der auch Paulus ⟨heißt⟩, blickte, mit Heiligem Geist erfüllt, fest auf ihn hin 

10 und sprach: Du, voll aller List und aller Bosheit, Sohn des Teufels, Feind aller Gerechtigkeit! Willst du nicht aufhören, die geraden Wege des Herrn zu verkehren? 

11 Und jetzt siehe, die Hand des Herrn ist auf dir! Und du wirst blind sein und die Sonne eine Zeit lang nicht sehen. Und sogleich fiel Dunkel und Finsternis auf ihn; und er tappte umher und suchte solche, die ihn an der Hand leiteten. (2Kön 6,18) 

12 Dann, als der Prokonsul sah, was geschehen war, glaubte er, erstaunt über die Lehre des Herrn. (Mt 7,28) 

Tätigkeit in Antiochia in Pisidien

13 Als aber Paulus und seine Begleiter von Paphos abgefahren waren, kamen sie nach Perge in Pamphylien. Johannes aber sonderte sich von ihnen ab und kehrte nach Jerusalem zurück. (Apg 15,38) 

14 Sie aber zogen von Perge aus hindurch und kamen nach Antiochia in Pisidien; und sie gingen am Tag des Sabbats in die Synagoge und setzten sich. (Apg 13,5; Apg 16,13) 

15 Aber nach dem Vorlesen des Gesetzes und der Propheten sandten die Vorsteher der Synagoge zu ihnen und sagten: Ihr Brüder, wenn ihr ein Wort der Ermahnung an das Volk habt, so redet! (Lk 4,16; Apg 15,21) 

16 Paulus aber stand auf, winkte mit der Hand und sprach: Männer von Israel und ⟨ihr⟩, die ihr Gott fürchtet, hört: (Apg 21,40; Apg 26,1) 

17 Der Gott dieses Volkes Israel erwählte unsere Väter und erhöhte das Volk in der Fremdlingschaft im Land Ägypten, und mit erhobenem Arm führte er sie von dort heraus; (2Mo 12,51; 5Mo 4,37; 1Chr 16,13; Neh 9,7; Ps 105,24; Ps 135,4; Jes 41,8) 

18 und eine Zeit von etwa vierzig Jahren ertrug er sie in der Wüste. (2Mo 16,35; 5Mo 1,31) 

19 Und nachdem er sieben Nationen im Land Kanaan vertilgt hatte, ließ er sie deren Land erben (5Mo 7,1; 5Mo 12,10) 

20 ⟨für⟩ etwa vierhundertfünfzig Jahre. Und danach gab er ihnen Richter bis zu Samuel, dem Propheten. (Ri 2,16; 1Sam 3,20; 1Sam 7,15) 

21 Und von da an begehrten sie einen König, und Gott gab ihnen Saul, den Sohn des Kisch, einen Mann aus dem Stamm Benjamin, vierzig Jahre lang. (1Sam 8,5; 1Sam 10,20)

23 Aus dessen Nachkommenschaft hat Gott nach Verheißung dem Israel als Retter Jesus gebracht, (2Sam 7,12; Ps 132,11; Mt 1,1; Apg 4,12) 

24 nachdem Johannes vor dessen Auftreten die Taufe der Buße dem ganzen Volk Israel verkündigt hatte. (Mt 3,1; Apg 19,4) 

25 Als aber Johannes seinen Lauf erfüllte, sprach er: Was ihr meint, dass ich sei, bin ich nicht, sondern siehe, es kommt einer nach mir, dem ich nicht würdig bin, die Sandale an den Füßen zu lösen. (Mk 1,7) 

26 Ihr Brüder, Söhne des Geschlechts Abrahams und ⟨ihr⟩, die unter euch Gott fürchten, uns ist das Wort dieser Rettung gesandt. (Apg 13,46) 

27 Denn die zu Jerusalem wohnen und ihre Obersten haben, da sie diesen nicht erkannten, auch die Stimmen der Propheten erfüllt, die jeden Sabbat gelesen werden, indem sie ⟨über ihn⟩ Gericht hielten. (Mk 14,53; Lk 24,44; Joh 8,19; 1Kor 2,8) 

28 Und obschon sie keine todeswürdige Schuld fanden, baten sie den Pilatus, dass er umgebracht werde. (Mt 27,23; Joh 19,15) 

29 Und nachdem sie alles vollendet hatten, was über ihn geschrieben ist, nahmen sie ihn vom Holz herab und legten ihn in eine Gruft. (Mt 27,59) 

30 Gott aber hat ihn aus den Toten auferweckt, (Apg 2,24; Apg 25,19) 

31 und er ist mehrere Tage hindurch denen erschienen, die mit ihm hinaufgezogen waren von Galiläa nach Jerusalem, die jetzt seine Zeugen an das Volk sind. (Apg 1,3; Apg 10,41) 

32 Und wir verkündigen euch die gute Botschaft von der zu den Vätern geschehenen Verheißung, 

33 dass Gott sie uns, ihren Kindern, erfüllt hat, indem er Jesus erweckte; wie auch im zweiten Psalm geschrieben steht: »Du bist mein Sohn, heute habe ich dich gezeugt.« (Ps 2,7; Hebr 1,5) 

34 Dass er ihn aber aus den Toten auferweckt hat, sodass er nicht mehr zur Verwesung zurückkehrte, hat er so ausgesprochen: »Ich werde euch die zuverlässigen heiligen Güter Davids geben.« (Jes 55,3) 

35 Deshalb sagt er auch an einer anderen ⟨Stelle⟩: »Du wirst nicht zugeben, dass dein Heiliger die Verwesung sieht.« (Ps 16,10; Apg 2,31) 

36 Denn David freilich entschlief, nachdem er seinem Geschlecht nach dem Willen Gottes gedient hatte, und wurde zu seinen Vätern versammelt und sah die Verwesung. (Apg 2,29; Apg 13,22) 

37 Der aber, den Gott auferweckt hat, sah die Verwesung nicht. (Ps 16,10; Apg 2,31) 

38 So sei es euch nun kund, ihr Brüder, dass durch diesen euch Vergebung der Sünden verkündigt wird; und von allem, wovon ihr durch das Gesetz Moses nicht gerechtfertigt werden konntet, (Apg 5,31; Röm 8,3; 1Kor 15,17) 

39 wird durch diesen jeder Glaubende gerechtfertigt. (Röm 3,26; Gal 2,16; Hebr 9,15) 

40 Seht nun zu, dass nicht eintrifft, was in den Propheten gesagt ist: 

41 »Seht, ihr Verächter, und wundert euch und verschwindet! Denn ich wirke ein Werk in euren Tagen, ein Werk, das ihr nicht glauben werdet, wenn es euch jemand erzählt.« (Hab 1,5) 

42 Als sie aber hinausgingen, baten sie, dass am folgenden Sabbat diese Worte ⟨noch einmal⟩ zu ihnen geredet würden. 

43 Als aber die Synagogenversammlung sich aufgelöst hatte, folgten viele der Juden und der anbetenden Proselyten dem Paulus und Barnabas, die zu ihnen sprachen und ihnen zuredeten, beharrlich bei der Gnade Gottes zu bleiben. (Apg 11,23; 1Petr 5,12) 

44 Am nächsten Sabbat aber versammelte sich fast die ganze Stadt, um das Wort Gottes zu hören. 

45 Als aber die Juden die Volksmengen sahen, wurden sie von Eifersucht erfüllt und widersprachen dem, was von Paulus geredet wurde, und lästerten. (Apg 14,2; Apg 17,5; Apg 18,6) 

46 Paulus aber und Barnabas sprachen freimütig: Zu euch musste notwendig das Wort Gottes zuerst geredet werden; weil ihr es aber von euch stoßt und euch selber des ewigen Lebens nicht für würdig haltet, siehe, so wenden wir uns zu den Nationen. (Mt 21,43; Apg 3,26; Apg 13,26; Apg 18,6; Apg 28,25; Röm 11,11) 

47 Denn so hat uns der Herr geboten: »Ich habe dich zum Licht der Nationen gesetzt, dass du zum Heil bist bis an das Ende der Erde.« (Jes 49,6; Lk 2,32; Apg 10,42; Apg 26,23) 

48 Als aber die ⟨aus den⟩ Nationen es hörten, freuten sie sich und verherrlichten das Wort des Herrn; und es glaubten, so viele zum ewigen Leben verordnet waren. (Apg 8,8; Röm 8,29; 2Thess 3,1) 

49 Das Wort des Herrn aber wurde ausgebreitet durch die ganze Gegend. (Apg 6,7) 

50 Die Juden aber erregten die anbetenden vornehmen Frauen und die Ersten der Stadt und erweckten eine Verfolgung gegen Paulus und Barnabas und vertrieben sie aus ihren Grenzen. (Apg 9,23; 1Thess 2,16; 2Tim 3,11) 

51 Sie aber schüttelten den Staub von ihren Füßen gegen sie ab und kamen nach Ikonion. (Mt 10,14; Apg 18,6)

1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 

2 While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ 

3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. 

On Cyprus

4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 

5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper. 

6 They travelled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 

7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 

8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 

9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 

10 ‘You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 

11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.’ Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 

12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. 

In Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. 

14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. 

15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, ‘Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.’ 

16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: ‘Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 

17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country; 

18 for about forty years he endured their conduct in the wilderness; 

19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance. 

20 All this took about 450 years. ‘After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 

21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled for forty years. 

22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” 

23 ‘From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Saviour Jesus, as he promised. 

24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. 

25 As John was completing his work, he said: “Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” 

26 ‘Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 

27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognise Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 

28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 

29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 

30 But God raised him from the dead, 

31 and for many days he was seen by those who had travelled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. 

32 ‘We tell you the good news: what God promised our ancestors 

33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘ “You are my son; today I have become your father.” (Ps 2,7) 

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said, ‘ “I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.” (Jes 55,3) 

35 So it is also stated elsewhere: ‘ “You will not let your holy one see decay.” (Ps 16,10) 

36 ‘Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed. 

37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. 

38 ‘Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 

39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. 

40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 

41 ‘ “Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.” ’ (Hab 1,5) 

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 

43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. 

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 

45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him. 

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: ‘We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 

47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘ “I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.” ’ (Jes 49,6) 

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honoured the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. 

49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 

50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 

51 So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. 

52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 

2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 

3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 

4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. 

5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. 

6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus: 

7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. 

8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. 

9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, 

10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 

11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. 

12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. 

13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem. 

14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 

15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 

16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. 

17 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it. 

18 And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. 

19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. 

20 And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. 

21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. 

22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 

23 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: 

24 When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 

25 And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. 

26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. 

27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. 

28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. 

29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 

30 But God raised him from the dead: 

31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. 

32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, 

33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 

34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. 

35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 

36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 

37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 

38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 

39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 

40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; 

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. 

42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 

43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 

44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. 

45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 

46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 

47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. 

50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. 

51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. 

52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.
