1Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.2And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.3And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.4Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.5Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.6Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.7Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;8And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say , to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:9And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;10And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.11And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.12Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.13Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:14And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:15And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.16But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,17And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.18Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;19Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.20Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.21Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.22Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.23Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it .24So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.25And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.26Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.27Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.28But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;29And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.30Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.31Nevertheless for thy great mercies'sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.32Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.33Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:34Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.35For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.36Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:37And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.38And because of all this we make a sure covenant , and write it ; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it .

Und man lobe den Namen deiner Herrlichkeit, der über alle Danksagung und alles Lob erhaben ist! Du hast den Himmel gemacht, aller Himmel Himmel samt ihrem ganzen Heer, die Erde und alles, was auf ihr ist, die Meere und alles, was in ihnen ist. Du erhältst alles am Leben, und das Heer des Himmels betet dich an. (Ge 1:1; Ne 8:6; Job 1:20; Ps 95:6; Ps 96:9; Ps 124:8; Ps 138:2; Joh 4:20; Ac 17:25; Col 1:16)7Du, HERR, bist der Gott, der Abram erwählt und aus Ur in Chaldäa herausgeführt und mit dem Namen Abraham benannt hat. (Ge 11:31; Ge 17:5)8Und du hast sein Herz treu vor dir befunden und den Bund mit ihm geschlossen, das Land der Kanaaniter, der Hetiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Jebusiter und Girgasiter seinem Samen zu geben; und du hast dein Wort gehalten, denn du bist gerecht. (Ge 15:6; Ge 15:18; Ge 17:7; De 32:4; Jos 21:45; Jos 23:14; 1Co 4:2)9Du hast das Elend unserer Väter in Ägypten angesehen und ihr Schreien am Schilfmeer erhört; (Ex 2:23; Ex 14:15)10und du hast Zeichen und Wunder getan am Pharao und allen seinen Knechten und an allem Volk seines Landes; denn du wusstest wohl, dass sie Übermut mit ihnen getrieben hatten, und du hast dir einen Namen gemacht, wie es am heutigen Tag [offenbar] ist. (Ex 7:1; Ex 18:11; 2Ki 19:27; Isa 63:12; Jer 32:20)11Du hast das Meer vor ihnen zerteilt, und sie gingen mitten durchs Meer auf dem Trockenen, aber ihre Verfolger hast du in die Tiefe geschleudert wie einen Stein in mächtige Wasser. (Ex 15:5; Re 18:21)12Du hast sie geleitet bei Tag mit einer Wolkensäule und bei Nacht mit einer Feuersäule, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf dem sie ziehen sollten. (Ex 13:21)13Du bist auf den Berg Sinai herabgefahren und hast mit ihnen vom Himmel her geredet und ihnen richtige Ordnungen und wahrhaftige Gesetze gegeben, gute Satzungen und Gebote. (Ex 19:18; Ex 20:1; De 4:33; Ps 19:8; Isa 42:21; Joh 1:17; Heb 1:1)14Deinen heiligen Sabbat hast du ihnen verkündet und ihnen Gebote, Satzungen und ein Gesetz geboten durch deinen Knecht Mose. (Ex 20:8; Eze 20:12)15Brot vom Himmel hast du ihnen gegeben, als sie hungerten, und Wasser aus dem Felsen hast du für sie hervorgebracht, als sie dürsteten; und du hast ihnen befohlen, hineinzugehen und das Land einzunehmen, über das du deine Hand [zum Schwur] erhoben hattest, es ihnen zu geben. (Ex 16:15; Ex 17:3; Ex 17:6; De 1:8; De 8:3; Joh 6:31)16Aber sie und unsere Väter wurden übermütig und halsstarrig, sodass sie deinen Geboten nicht folgten; (2Ch 30:8; Jer 19:15)17und sie weigerten sich zu hören, und gedachten nicht an deine Wunder, die du an ihnen getan hattest, sondern wurden halsstarrig und gaben sich selbst ein Oberhaupt, um in ihrer Widerspenstigkeit in die Knechtschaft zurückzukehren. Aber du bist ein Gott der Vergebung, gnädig und barmherzig, langmütig und von großer Güte, und du hast sie nicht verlassen. (Nu 14:4; Nu 14:18; 1Sa 12:22; Ps 81:12; Ps 94:14; Mic 2:7; Heb 3:7; Heb 4:7)18Selbst als sie sich ein gegossenes Kalb machten und sprachen: Das ist dein Gott, der dich aus Ägypten geführt hat!, und große Lästerungen verübten, (Ex 32:1)19hast du sie nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit doch nicht verlassen in der Wüste; die Wolkensäule wich nicht von ihnen am Tag, um sie auf dem Weg zu führen, noch die Feuersäule in der Nacht, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, den sie ziehen sollten. (Ex 13:21; Nu 14:14; Ne 9:12; Ps 136:16; Eze 20:17; Ro 11:29; 2Ti 2:13)20Und du gabst ihnen deinen guten Geist, um sie zu unterweisen; und dein Manna nahmst du nicht von ihrem Mund, und als sie Durst litten, gabst du ihnen Wasser. (Ex 16:35; Nu 11:17; Isa 48:21; Isa 63:11; 1Co 10:4)21Du versorgtest sie 40 Jahre lang in der Wüste, dass ihnen nichts mangelte; ihre Kleider zerfielen nicht, und ihre Füße schwollen nicht an. (Nu 14:33; De 2:7; De 8:4; De 29:5)22Du gabst ihnen Königreiche und Völker und teiltest ihnen das ganze Gebiet aus, dass sie das Land Sihons einnahmen, das Land des Königs von Hesbon und das Land Ogs, des Königs von Baschan. (Nu 21:21; Jer 27:5)23Du machtest ihre Kinder zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel und brachtest sie in das Land, von dem du ihren Vätern verheißen hattest, dass sie hineinziehen und es einnehmen würden; (Ge 22:17; Jos 1:2; Jos 11:16)24und die Kinder zogen hinein und nahmen das Land ein. Und du demütigtest vor ihnen die Einwohner des Landes, die Kanaaniter, und gabst sie in ihre Hand, ebenso ihre Könige und die Völker im Land, dass sie mit ihnen nach Belieben handelten. (Jos 10:24; Jos 10:40; Jos 21:43; Ps 44:3)25Und sie eroberten feste Städte und ein fettes Land und nahmen Häuser in Besitz, mit allerlei Gut gefüllt, ausgehauene Brunnen, Weinberge, Ölbäume und Obstbäume in Menge; und sie aßen und wurden satt und fett und ließen sich’s wohl sein in deiner großen Güte. (De 6:10; Eze 20:6)26Aber sie wurden widerspenstig und lehnten sich auf gegen dich und warfen dein Gesetz hinter ihren Rücken und erschlugen deine Propheten, die gegen sie Zeugnis ablegten, um sie zu dir zurückzuführen, und verübten große Lästerungen. (De 32:13; 1Sa 15:23; 1Ki 19:10; Ps 50:17; Jer 2:30; Eze 20:21; Ho 13:6; Mt 23:37; Mr 7:8)27Darum gabst du sie in die Hand ihrer Feinde, die sie bedrängten. Doch zur Zeit ihrer Drangsal schrien sie zu dir, und du erhörtest sie vom Himmel her und gabst ihnen nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit Retter, die sie aus der Hand ihrer Feinde erretteten. (Jud 2:14)28Aber sobald sie Ruhe hatten, taten sie wiederum Böses vor dir. Da hast du sie der Hand ihrer Feinde überlassen; die herrschten über sie. Wenn sie dann wieder zu dir schrien, erhörtest du sie vom Himmel her und hast sie oftmals errettet nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit. (Jud 2:19; Ps 106:40)29Und du ließest ihnen bezeugen, dass sie zu deinem Gesetz zurückkehren sollten; aber sie waren übermütig und folgten deinen Geboten nicht, sondern sündigten gegen deine Bestimmungen, durch die der Mensch leben wird, wenn er sie tut; und sie entzogen dir widerspenstig ihre Schulter[1] und waren halsstarrig und folgten nicht. (Le 18:5; Jud 6:8; 2Ki 17:13; Ne 9:16; Jer 17:23)30Du aber hattest viele Jahre lang Geduld mit ihnen und hast gegen sie Zeugnis ablegen lassen durch deinen Geist, durch deine Propheten; aber sie wollten nicht hören. Darum hast du sie in die Hand der Völker der Länder gegeben. (2Ki 18:11; 2Ki 24:3; 2Ch 24:19; 2Ch 36:15; Ne 9:20; Ne 9:26; Ne 9:29; Jer 7:25; Ro 2:4)31Aber nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit hast du sie nicht völlig vertilgt und sie nicht verlassen. Denn du bist ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott! (Ne 9:17; Ne 9:19; Jer 4:27; Jer 29:11)32Nun, unser Gott, du großer Gott, mächtig und furchtgebietend, der du den Bund und die Gnade bewahrst, achte nicht gering all das Elend, das uns getroffen hat, unsere Könige, unsere Fürsten, unsere Priester, unsere Propheten, unsere Väter und dein ganzes Volk, seit der Zeit der Könige von Assyrien bis zum heutigen Tag! (2Ki 17:23; Ezr 4:2; Ne 1:5; Ne 4:8)33Du bist gerecht in allem, was über uns gekommen ist; denn du hast Treue bewiesen; wir aber sind gottlos gewesen. (De 32:4; Ps 106:6; Ps 119:137; Da 9:7; Da 9:14; 1Th 5:24; 2Ti 2:13)34Und unsere Könige, unsere Fürsten, unsere Priester und unsere Väter haben nicht nach deinem Gesetz gehandelt und haben nicht geachtet auf deine Gebote und auf deine Zeugnisse, die du ihnen hast bezeugen lassen. (Ne 9:30; Jer 25:4; Da 9:5)35Sie haben dir nicht gedient in ihrem Königreich, trotz deiner großen Wohltat, die du ihnen erwiesen hast, und trotz des weiten, fetten Landes, das du ihnen gegeben hast, und sie haben sich von ihren bösen Taten nicht abgekehrt. (De 28:47; De 31:20; Ne 9:25)36Siehe, wir sind heute Knechte; ja, in dem Land, das du unseren Vätern gegeben hast, damit sie seine Früchte und Güter genießen sollten, siehe, in dem sind wir [nun] Knechte; (Ezr 9:9; Joh 8:33)37und sein Ertrag mehrt sich für die Könige, die du über uns gesetzt hast um unserer Sünden willen, und sie herrschen über unsere Leiber und über unser Vieh nach ihrem Wohlgefallen, und wir sind in großer Bedrängnis! (De 28:33; Ne 5:4)
