1Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.2And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?4Wherefore Hanun took David' servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.5Then there went certain , and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.6And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.7So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.8And when David heard of it , he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.9And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.10Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.11And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.12And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.13Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.14So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.15And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.16And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.17And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.18But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.19And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

Sind nicht seine Knechte zu dir gekommen, um das Land auszuforschen und zu durchstöbern und auszukundschaften? (Ge 42:9; Jos 2:1; Jud 1:23; Jud 18:2; 2Sa 10:3)4Da ließ Hanun die Knechte Davids ergreifen, und er ließ ihnen [die Bärte] abscheren und ihre Obergewänder halb abschneiden bis ans Gesäß; und er sandte sie fort. (Le 19:27; 2Sa 10:4; 2Ch 36:16; Ps 35:12; Ps 109:4; Isa 15:2; Mr 12:4; Lu 20:10)5Als man nun hinging und David von diesen Männern berichtete, sandte er ihnen entgegen; denn die Männer waren sehr beschämt. Und der König ließ ihnen sagen: Bleibt in Jericho, bis euer Bart wieder gewachsen ist, dann kommt wieder heim! (De 34:3; 2Ki 2:4; Mt 18:31; Mt 20:29; Lu 10:30; Lu 19:1)6Als aber die Ammoniter sahen, dass sie sich bei David verhasst gemacht hatten, sandten Hanun und die Ammoniter 1 000 Talente Silber, um Streitwagen und Reiter von den Aramäern aus Aram-Naharajim und von den Aramäern aus Maacha und aus Zoba anzuwerben; (Ge 34:30; Ex 5:21; 1Sa 13:4; 2Sa 10:6)7und sie warben 32 000 Streitwagen an und den König von Maacha mit seinem Volk; die kamen und lagerten sich vor Medeba. Und die Ammoniter sammelten sich aus ihren Städten und zogen in den Kampf. (Jos 13:9; Jos 13:16; Isa 15:2)8Als David dies hörte, sandte er Joab mit dem ganzen Heer, die Helden. (2Sa 23:8; 1Ch 11:6; 1Ch 11:10)9Die Ammoniter aber waren ausgezogen und rüsteten sich zum Kampf vor dem Stadttor. Die Könige aber, die [zu ihrer Hilfe] gekommen waren, standen für sich auf dem Schlachtfeld. (1Sa 17:2; Jer 50:41; Joe 2:5)10Als nun Joab sah, dass ihm von vorn und hinten ein Angriff drohte, traf er eine Auswahl unter der Mannschaft in Israel und stellte sich gegen die Aramäer auf. (Jos 8:22; Jud 20:41; 2Sa 10:9)11Das übrige Volk aber übergab er dem Befehl seines Bruders Abisai, damit sie sich gegen die Ammoniter aufstellten; (1Ch 11:20; 1Ch 18:12)12und er sprach: Wenn die Aramäer mir überlegen sind, so komme mir zu Hilfe; wenn aber die Ammoniter dir überlegen sind, so will ich dir zur Hilfe kommen. (Ne 4:14; Ec 4:9; Ga 6:2)13Sei stark; ja, lass uns stark sein für unser Volk und für die Städte unseres Gottes; der HERR aber tue, was ihm gefällt! (De 31:6; Jud 10:15; 2Sa 15:26; 2Sa 16:10; Ezr 10:4; Ne 4:14; Ps 27:14; 1Co 16:13)14Und Joab rückte mit dem Volk, das bei ihm war, zum Kampf gegen die Aramäer vor, und sie flohen vor ihm. (1Ki 20:19; 1Ki 20:28; 2Ch 13:15)15Als aber die Ammoniter sahen, dass die Aramäer flohen, flohen auch sie vor seinem Bruder Abisai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Und Joab kam nach Jerusalem. (Le 26:7)16Als aber die Aramäer sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen worden waren, sandten sie Boten hin und ließen die Aramäer von jenseits des Stromes ausziehen. Und Sophach, der Heerführer Hadad-Esers, zog vor ihnen her. (2Sa 10:15)17Als dies David berichtet wurde, versammelte er ganz Israel und zog über den Jordan. Und als er zu ihnen kam, stellte er sich in Schlachtordnung gegen sie auf. Und David stellte sich gegen die Aramäer zum Kampf, und sie kämpften mit ihm. (1Ch 19:9; Isa 22:6)18Aber die Aramäer flohen vor Israel. Und David tötete von den Aramäern 7 000 Wagenkämpfer und 40 000 Mann Fußvolk. Dazu tötete er Sophach, den Heerführer. (2Sa 10:18; 1Ch 19:14; Ps 18:33; Ps 33:16)19Und als die Knechte Hadad-Esers sahen, dass sie vor Israel geschlagen waren, machten sie Frieden mit David und wurden ihm dienstbar. Und die Aramäer wollten den Ammonitern nicht mehr helfen. (Ge 14:4; Jos 9:9; 1Ki 20:12; 1Ch 14:17; Ps 48:4)
