1And Joseph fell upon his father' face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.4And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.6And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.7And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,8And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father' house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.10And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.12And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:13For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.14And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.15And when Joseph' brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.16And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,17So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.18And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?20But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.21Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father' house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.23And Joseph saw Ephraim' children of the third generation : the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph' knees.24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.26So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
1Josef warf sich über seinen Vater, weinte um ihn und küsste ihn.2Dann befahl er den Ärzten, die ihm dienten, seinen Vater Israel einzubalsamieren.3Das dauerte wie üblich vierzig Tage. Ganz Ägypten trauerte siebzig Tage um Israel.4Als die Trauerzeit vorüber war, bat Josef die königlichen Hofbeamten: „Wenn ihr mir eine Gunst erweisen wollt, dann richtet dem Pharao aus:5Mein Vater hat mich schwören lassen, ihn im Land Kanaan beizusetzen, in dem Grab, das er für sich vorbereitet hat. Lass mich hinziehen und meinen Vater dort begraben! Dann komme ich wieder zurück.'“6Der Pharao ließ ihm antworten: „Zieh hin und begrabe deinen Vater, wie du es ihm geschworen hast!“7Josef machte sich auf den Weg. Die hohen Beamten des Pharao und die führenden Männer Ägyptens begleiteten ihn.8Dazu kam das ganze Haus Josefs, alle seine Brüder und die Familie seines Vaters. Nur ihre Kinder und ihre Schafe und Rinder ließen sie in Goschen zurück.9Sogar Streitwagen und Reiter zogen mit ihm hinauf. Es wurde ein gewaltiges Heerlager.10Als sie bis zur Stechdorn-Tenne östlich des Jordan gekommen waren, hielten sie eine sehr große und würdige Trauerfeier. Sieben Tage lang ließ Josef die Totenklage für seinen Vater dauern.11Die Einheimischen, die Bewohner des Landes Kanaan, beobachteten die Trauerfeier dort und sagten: „Eine würdige Trauer ist das für Ägypten!“ Darum nannten sie den Platz Abel-Mizrajim, Trauer der Ägypter.12So erfüllten Jakobs Söhne den letzten Wunsch ihres Vaters.13Sie brachten ihn ins Land Kanaan und begruben ihn in der Höhle des Grundstücks von Machpela. Abraham hatte dieses Grundstück gegenüber von Mamre als eigene Grabstätte von dem Hetiter Efron gekauft.14Nachdem Josef seinen Vater beigesetzt hatte, kehrte er mit seinen Brüdern und allen, die mit ihm gezogen waren, nach Ägypten zurück.
Bestätigung der Vergebung
15Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters gerieten Josefs Brüder in Sorge: „Was ist, wenn Josef sich nun feindlich gegen uns stellt und uns das Böse heimzahlt, das wir ihm angetan haben?“16So ließen sie Josef sagen: „Dein Vater hat uns vor seinem Tod aufgetragen:17Bittet Josef: Vergib doch die Sünde und das Verbrechen deiner Brüder; vergib, dass sie dir Böses angetan haben!' Deshalb bitten wir dich: Vergib uns das Verbrechen! Wir dienen doch demselben Gott wie unser Vater!“ Als Josef das hörte, weinte er.18Danach kamen die Brüder selbst zu Josef, fielen vor ihm nieder und sagten: „Wir sind deine Sklaven!“19Aber Josef erwiderte: „Habt keine Angst! Bin ich denn an Gottes Stelle?20Ihr hattet zwar Böses mit mir vor, aber Gott hat es zum Guten gewendet, um zu erreichen, was heute geschieht: ein großes Volk am Leben zu erhalten.21Habt also keine Angst! Ich werde euch und eure Kinder versorgen.“ So beruhigte er sie und redete ihnen zu Herzen.
Josefs Ende
22Josef blieb mit allen Nachkommen seines Vaters in Ägypten. Er wurde 110 Jahre alt23und sah noch Efraïms Söhne und Enkel. Auch die Söhne von Machir Ben-Manasse wurden Josef noch auf den Schoß gelegt.24Josef sagte zu seinen Brüdern: „Ich muss sterben, aber Gott wird euch nicht vergessen. Er wird euch aus diesem Land wieder in das Land bringen, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen hat.“25Dann ließ Josef die Söhne Israels schwören: „Wenn Gott sich eurer annimmt, dann nehmt meine Gebeine von hier mit!“26Josef starb im Alter von 110 Jahren. Man balsamierte ihn ein und legte ihn in einen Sarg in Ägypten.

Ceux-ci embaumèrent donc Israël.3Ils y passèrent quarante jours, le temps nécessaire à un embaumement, et les Egyptiens le pleurèrent pendant soixante-dix jours.4Quand les jours de deuil furent écoulés, Joseph dit aux hauts fonctionnaires de la cour du pharaon: Si vous voulez bien m’accorder cette faveur, portez à l’attention du pharaon5que mon père m’a fait prêter serment en disant: « Me voici sur le point de mourir; j’ai fait creuser un tombeau au pays de Canaan, c’est là que vous m’enterrerez. » Maintenant donc, permets-moi d’y monter pour ensevelir mon père; après quoi, je reviendrai.6Le pharaon répondit à Joseph: Va et enterre ton père, comme il te l’a fait jurer.7Joseph partit donc pour ensevelir son père, accompagné de tous les hauts fonctionnaires du pharaon, des dignitaires de sa cour et de tous les hauts responsables d’Egypte,8ainsi que de toute sa famille, et celle de ses frères, toute la famille de son père. Ils ne laissèrent dans le pays de Goshen que leurs enfants, leurs moutons, leurs chèvres et leurs bovins.9Joseph fit le voyage, escorté et de chars et de leur équipage; le convoi ainsi formé était très impressionnant.10Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés à l’Aire d’Atad, située de l’autre côté du Jourdain, ils y célébrèrent de grandes funérailles très imposantes. Joseph mena deuil pour son père pendant sept jours.11En voyant ces funérailles dans l’Aire d’Atad, les Cananéens qui habitaient le pays dirent: Ce doit être un deuil important pour les Egyptiens. C’est pourquoi on a nommé cet endroit de l’autre côté du Jourdain: Abel-Mitsraïm (Deuil de l’Egypte).12Les fils de Jacob firent donc ce que leur père leur avait demandé.13Ils le transportèrent au pays de Canaan et l’enterrèrent dans la caverne du champ de Makpéla qu’Abraham avait achetée avec le champ à Ephrôn le Hittite, comme propriété funéraire vis-à-vis de Mamré[1]. (Ac 7:16)14Après avoir enterré son père, Joseph revint en Egypte avec ses frères et tous ceux qui l’avaient accompagné aux funérailles.
Le Dieu souverain
15Maintenant que leur père était mort, les frères de Joseph se dirent: Qui sait, peut-être Joseph se mettra-t-il à nous haïr et à nous rendre tout le mal que nous lui avons fait.16Alors ils lui envoyèrent un messager pour lui dire: Avant de mourir, ton père nous a donné cet ordre:17« Vous demanderez à Joseph: Veuille, je te prie, pardonner le crime de tes frères et leur péché; car ils t’ont fait beaucoup de mal. Oui, je te prie, pardonne maintenant la faute des serviteurs du Dieu de ton père. » En recevant ce message, Joseph se mit à pleurer.18Ses frères vinrent en personne se jeter à ses pieds en disant: Nous sommes tes esclaves.19Mais Joseph leur dit: N’ayez aucune crainte! Suis-je à la place de Dieu?20Vous aviez projeté de me faire du mal, mais par ce que vous avez fait, Dieu a projeté du bien en vue d’accomplir ce qui se réalise aujourd’hui, pour sauver la vie à un peuple nombreux.21Maintenant donc, n’ayez aucune crainte, je pourvoirai à vos besoins ainsi qu’à ceux de vos enfants. Ainsi il les rassura et toucha leur cœur par ses paroles.
La fin de la vie de Joseph
22Joseph demeura en Egypte, ainsi que la famille de son père. Il vécut cent dix ans.23Il vit les descendants d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la troisième génération; de plus, les enfants de Makir, fils de Manassé, furent placés sur ses genoux à leur naissance.24A la fin de sa vie, il dit aux siens: Je vais mourir, mais Dieu ne manquera pas d’intervenir en votre faveur et vous fera remonter de ce pays vers celui qu’il a promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.25Puis Joseph fit prêter serment aux Israélites en leur disant: Lorsque Dieu interviendra pour vous, vous emporterez d’ici mes ossements[2]. (Heb 11:22)26Joseph mourut à l’âge de cent dix ans; on l’embauma, et on le déposa dans un sarcophage en Egypte.
