1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. 15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be . 16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. 22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham' house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.

Gottes Bund mit Abraham

1 Als Abram 99 Jahre alt war, erschien ihm Jahwe und sagte: „Ich bin El-Schaddai, 'Gott, der Allmächtige', geh deinen Weg vor mir und halte dich ganz an mich! 2 Ich schließe meinen Bund mit dir und werde dir unermesslich viele Nachkommen geben.“ 3 Da warf sich Abram vor Gott nieder, das Gesicht auf dem Boden. Gott sagte weiter zu ihm: 4 „Pass auf! Mein Bund sieht so aus: Du wirst zum Vater vieler Völker werden. 5 Deshalb sollst du auch nicht mehr Abram^[1] heißen, sondern Abraham!^[2] Denn ich habe dich zum Vater vieler Völker bestimmt.^[3] (Ro 4:17) 6 Ich werde dich überaus fruchtbar machen, sodass deine Nachkommen zu ganzen Völkern werden. Selbst Könige werden von dir abstammen. 7 Ich schließe meinen Bund mit dir und deinen Nachkommen^[4] durch alle Generationen hindurch. Es ist ein ewiger Bund, denn ich will dein und deiner Nachkommen Gott sein. (Ga 3:16) 8 Ich werde euch das ganze Land Kanaan geben, in dem du jetzt als Fremder lebst. Es wird deinen Nachkommen für immer gehören. Und ich werde ihr Gott sein.“ 9 Weiter sagte Gott: „Doch du, du sollst meinen Bund halten, du und deine Nachkommen, durch alle Generationen hindurch! 10 Eure Verpflichtung mir gegenüber besteht darin, dass ihr jeden Mann und jeden eurer männlichen Nachkommen beschneiden müsst. 11 Bei allen müsst ihr die Vorhaut am Geschlechtsteil entfernen. Das ist das Zeichen für den Bund zwischen mir und euch. 12 Am achten Tag muss jedes männliche Neugeborene beschnitten werden. Das gilt auch für die Sklaven, die bei euch geboren werden oder die ihr von Fremden kauft, auch dann, wenn sie nicht zu deiner Nachkommenschaft gehören. 13 Sie müssen unbedingt beschnitten werden! Ihr sollt das Zeichen meines Bundes am Körper tragen, denn mein Bund gilt für alle Zeit. 14 Ein Unbeschnittener, ein Mann, bei dem die Vorhaut nicht entfernt wurde, muss von seinem Stammesverband beseitigt^[5] werden. Er hat meinen Bund gebrochen.“ 15 Dann sagte Gott zu Abraham: „Sarai, deine Frau, sollst du nicht mehr Sarai nennen. Von jetzt an soll sie Sara heißen.^[6] 16 Ich werde sie segnen und dir einen Sohn von ihr schenken. Ich segne sie so, dass sie die Mutter ganzer Völker wird, selbst Könige werden von ihr stammen.“ 17 Da warf sich Abraham vor Gott nieder, das Gesicht auf dem Boden, und lachte. Er dachte: „Einem Hundertjährigen soll noch ‹ein Sohn› geboren werden, und eine Neunzigjährige soll noch ‹ein Kind› bekommen?“ 18 Dann sagte er zu Gott: „Wenn nur Ismaël vor dir leben kann!“ 19 Aber Gott sagte: „Nein, deine Frau Sara wird dir einen Sohn gebären, den du Isaak, 'Lacher', nennen sollst. Mit ihm und seinen Nachkommen richte ich meinen Bund für alle Zeiten auf. 20 Doch auch wegen Ismaël habe ich dich erhört. Ich werde ihn segnen und fruchtbar machen, und er wird sehr viele Nachkommen haben. Zwölf Fürsten wird er zeugen, und ich mache ihn zum Vater eines großen Volkes. 21 Aber meinen Bund richte ich mit Isaak auf, den Sara dir im nächsten Jahr um diese Zeit schenken wird.“ 22 Als Gott das Gespräch mit Abraham beendet hatte, fuhr er wieder zum Himmel hinauf. 23 Noch am gleichen Tag beschnitt Abraham seinen Sohn Ismaël und alle Sklaven, die in seinem Haus geboren oder bei Fremden gekauft worden waren, wie Gott es ihm gesagt hatte. 24 Auch er selbst ließ sich beschneiden. Damals war er 99 Jahre alt, 25 und sein Sohn Ismaël war dreizehn. 26 Abraham und Ismaël wurden also am gleichen Tag beschnitten 27 zusammen mit allen Männern, die zu Abrahams Haushalt gehörten.

Le signe de l’alliance

1 Quand Abram eut quatre-vingt-dix-neuf ans, l’Eternel lui apparut et lui dit: Je suis le Dieu tout-puissant. Mène ta vie sous mon regard et comporte-toi de manière intègre 2 afin que j’établisse mon alliance avec toi et que je multiplie ta descendance à l’extrême. 3 Abram se prosterna, la face contre terre, et Dieu ajouta: 4 Pour moi, voici quelle est mon alliance avec toi: Tu deviendras le père d’une multitude de peuples. 5 Désormais ton nom ne sera plus Abram (Père éminent), mais Abraham, car je ferai de toi le père d’une multitude de peuples^[1]. (Ro 4:17) 6 Je multiplierai à l’extrême le nombre de tes descendants et je te donnerai d’être à l’origine de divers peuples; des rois même seront issus de toi. 7 Je maintiendrai pour toujours mon alliance avec toi, et avec ta descendance après toi, de génération en génération. En vertu de cette alliance, je serai ton Dieu et celui de ta descendance après toi. 8 Je te donnerai, ainsi qu’à ta descendance, ce pays de Canaan où tu vis maintenant en étranger. Il sera votre propriété pour toujours. Et je serai le Dieu de ta descendance^[2]. (Ac 7:5) 9 Puis Dieu ajouta: De ton côté, tu respecteras les clauses de mon alliance, toi et ta descendance, de génération en génération. 10 Voici quelle est mon alliance avec vous et avec ta descendance, quels en sont les termes que vous devrez respecter: tous ceux qui sont de sexe masculin parmi vous seront circoncis^[3]. (Ac 7:8; Ro 4:11) 11 Vous porterez cette marque dans votre chair, et cela sera le signe de l’alliance entre moi et vous. 12 De génération en génération, tout garçon devra être circoncis à l’âge de huit jours. Cela s’applique aussi à tout garçon né dans ta maison, et aux étrangers qui auront été achetés comme esclaves, et qui ne sont pas de ta descendance. 13 Tous sans exception seront circoncis, qu’ils soient nés dans ta maison ou acquis à prix d’argent; ainsi le signe de mon alliance sera gravé dans votre chair. C’est là une alliance à perpétuité. 14 Celui qui n’aura pas été circoncis sera retranché de son peuple parce qu’il n’aura pas respecté les clauses de mon alliance.

L’héritier de l’alliance

15 Dieu dit encore à Abraham: Pour ce qui concerne ta femme Saraï, tu ne l’appelleras plus Saraï (Ma princesse), désormais son nom est Sara (Princesse). 16 Je la bénirai et je t’accorderai par elle un fils; je la bénirai et elle deviendra l’ancêtre de plusieurs peuples; des rois de divers peuples sortiront d’elle. 17 Alors Abraham se prosterna de nouveau la face contre terre, et il se mit à rire en se disant intérieurement: Eh quoi! un homme centenaire peut-il encore avoir un enfant? Et Sara, une femme de quatre-vingt-dix ans, peut-elle donner naissance à un enfant? 18 Et il dit à Dieu: Tout ce que je demande c’est qu’Ismaël vive et que tu prennes soin de lui^[4]. 19 Dieu reprit: Mais non! c’est Sara, ta femme, qui te donnera un fils. Tu l’appelleras Isaac (Il rit) et j’établirai mon alliance avec lui, pour toujours, et avec sa descendance après lui. 20 En ce qui concerne Ismaël, j’ai entendu ta prière en sa faveur. Oui, je le bénirai. Je lui donnerai de nombreux descendants: je le multiplierai à l’extrême. Douze princes seront issus de lui et je ferai de lui l’ancêtre d’un grand peuple. 21 Mais mon alliance, c’est avec Isaac que je l’établirai, le fils que Sara te donnera l’année prochaine à cette époque.

La circoncision d’Abraham et des siens

22 Après avoir achevé de parler avec Abraham, Dieu s’éleva au-dessus de lui. 23 Ce même jour, Abraham circoncit Ismaël son fils, ainsi que tous les gens nés dans sa maison et tous les esclaves qu’il avait achetés. Tous les gens de sexe masculin qui appartenaient à la maison d’Abraham furent circoncis comme Dieu le lui avait ordonné. 24 Abraham avait quatre-vingt-dix-neuf ans quand il fut circoncis et 25 Ismaël son fils en avait treize. 26 Abraham et son fils Ismaël furent circoncis le même jour, 27 en même temps que tous les hommes de sa maison nés chez lui et les étrangers acquis à prix d’argent.
