1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see. 2 Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. 3 I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness. 4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle. 5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. 6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man' heart shall melt: 8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. 9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. 14 And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land. 15 Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. 16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished. 17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. 18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. 19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees'excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. 20 It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. 21 But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there. 22 And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

1 O rostire cu privire la Babilon, pe care a văzut‑o Isaia, fiul lui Amoț. 2 „Ridicați un steag pe un munte pleșuv și strigați tare la ei! Faceți‑le semn cu mâna să intre pe porțile nobililor! 3 Eu Însumi am poruncit sfinților Mei și Mi‑am chemat vitejii – pe cei ce se bucură de măreția Mea – să‑Mi ducă la îndeplinire mânia.“ 4 Un tumult se aude pe munți, ca al unui popor numeros. Un vuiet de împărății, de neamuri adunându‑se. DOMNUL Oștirilor Își strânge oștirea pentru luptă. 5 Ei vin dintr‑o țară îndepărtată, de la marginea cerurilor. DOMNUL și uneltele mâniei Sale vin ca să distrugă întreaga țară. 6 Gemeți, căci ziua DOMNULUI este aproape! Va veni ca o devastare din partea Celui Atotputernic^[1]. 7 De aceea toate mâinile vor slăbi, inima oricărui om se va înmuia 8 și toți se vor îngrozi. Chinurile și durerile îi vor apuca și se vor zvârcoli ca o femeie în travaliu. Se vor uita îngroziți unul la altul, cu fețele înroșite. 9 Iată, vine ziua DOMNULUI, o zi a cruzimii! Vine cu mânie și urgie aprinsă, pentru a face din țară un pustiu și pentru a nimici păcătoșii din ea. 10 Stelele cerurilor și constelațiile lor nu‑și vor mai arăta lumina; soarele va fi întunecat la răsăritul lui, iar luna nu‑și va mai trimite lumina. 11 „Voi pedepsi lumea pentru răutatea ei și pe cei răi pentru nelegiuirea lor. Voi pune capăt mândriei celor aroganți și voi doborî trufia celor groaznici. 12 Îl voi face pe om mai rar decât aurul pur, și pe oameni mai rari decât aurul de Ofir. 13 Pentru aceasta, voi face să se cutremure cerurile, iar pământul se va zgudui din temelii din cauza furiei DOMNULUI Oștirilor, în ziua aprigei Lui mânii. 14 Se va‑ntâmpla că, asemenea unei gazele urmărite sau a unei turme fără păstor, fiecare se va întoarce la poporul lui, fiecare va fugi în țara lui. 15 Oricine va fi găsit va fi străpuns și oricine va fi capturat va cădea ucis de sabie. 16 Copiii lor vor fi zdrobiți în bucăți înaintea ochilor lor, casele lor vor fi jefuite, iar soțiile lor vor fi necinstite. 17 Iată, îi voi stârni împotriva lor pe mezi, cărora nu le va păsa de argint și nu‑și vor găsi plăcerea în aur. 18 Arcurile lor îi vor străpunge pe cei tineri. De rodul pântecului nu vor avea milă, iar copiii nu vor găsi îndurare în ochii lor. 19 Iar Babilonul, frumusețea împărățiilor, splendoarea măreției caldeenilor, va arăta ca Sodoma și Gomora în vremea când le‑a distrus Dumnezeu.^[2] 20 Nu va mai fi locuit niciodată, nu va mai sălășlui nimeni în el pentru tot restul generațiilor. Niciun arab nu‑și va întinde cortul acolo și niciun păstor nu‑și va odihni turma în acel loc. 21 Ci animalele deșertului vor sta acolo: șacalii^[3] îi vor umple casele, struții vor locui acolo, iar țapii sălbatici vor zburda în acel loc. 22 Hienele vor urla în palatele sale, iar șacalii – în casele lui de petrecere. Vremea lui este aproape, și zilele nu‑i vor fi prelungite.“
