1And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father' wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?11And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.12And his brethren went to feed their father' flock in Shechem.13And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I .14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?16And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks .17And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.18And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.19And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.20Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.21And Reuben heard it , and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.22And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.23And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;24And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.25And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.26And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?27Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.28Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.29And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.30And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?31And they took Joseph' coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;32And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son' coat or no.33And he knew it, and said, It is my son' coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.34And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.35And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.36And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh', and captain of the guard.
1Iacov s‑a așezat în țara în care a locuit ca străin tatăl său, în țara Canaan.2Aceasta este istoria[1] lui Iacov. La vârsta de șaptesprezece ani, Iosif păștea turma împreună cu frații săi, fiii Bilhei și ai Zilpei, soțiile tatălui său. Iosif a adus tatălui lor un raport rău despre ei. (Ge 2:4)3Israel îl iubea pe Iosif mai mult decât pe toți ceilalți fii ai săi, pentru că era un fiu născut la bătrânețe, și i‑a făcut o tunică decorată[2].4Când frații săi au văzut că tatăl lor îl iubea mai mult decât pe ei, l‑au urât pe Iosif și n‑au putut să‑i vorbească prietenește.5Iosif a avut un vis pe care l‑a istorisit fraților săi, dar aceștia l‑au urât și mai mult.6El le‑a zis: – Ascultați, vă rog, visul pe care l‑am avut!7Se făcea că noi legam snopii în mijlocul câmpului. Dar iată că snopul meu s‑a ridicat și a stat drept, iar snopii voștri s‑au adunat în jurul lui și s‑au plecat înaintea snopului meu.8Frații săi i‑au răspuns: – Doar nu vei domni tu peste noi?! Doar nu ne vei stăpâni tu?! Și l‑au urât și mai mult din cauza viselor și a cuvintelor sale.9Iosif a mai avut un vis și l‑a istorisit și pe acesta fraților săi. El a zis: – Iată, am mai avut un vis. Se făcea că soarele, luna și unsprezece stele se plecau înaintea mea.10Dar când le‑a istorisit acest vis tatălui și fraților săi, tatăl său l‑a mustrat, zicându‑i: – Ce fel de vis este acesta pe care l‑ai avut? Oare vom veni eu, mama ta și frații tăi ca să ne plecăm până la pământ înaintea ta?11Frații săi l‑au invidiat, dar tatăl său a ținut minte acest vis.
Iosif este vândut de frații săi
12Frații săi s‑au dus să pască turma tatălui lor lângă Șehem[3].13Israel i‑a zis lui Iosif: – Știi că frații tăi pasc oile lângă Șehem. Vino, căci vreau să te trimit la ei. El a răspuns: – Iată‑mă, sunt gata.14Israel i‑a zis: – Du‑te, vezi dacă frații tăi și turma sunt bine și adu‑mi vești. Apoi l‑a trimis din valea Hebron. Când a ajuns la Șehem,15un om l‑a găsit rătăcind pe câmp și l‑a întrebat: – Ce cauți?16El a zis: – Îi caut pe frații mei. Spune‑mi, te rog, unde pasc ei turma?17Omul acela i‑a răspuns: – Au plecat de aici. Căci i‑am auzit: „Să mergem la Dotan.“ Iosif s‑a dus pe urma fraților săi și i‑a găsit la Dotan.18Aceștia l‑au văzut de departe și, înainte ca el să ajungă la ei, au pus la cale să‑l omoare.19Ei și‑au zis unul altuia: – Iată că vine „stăpânul viselor“![4]20Haideți acum să‑l omorâm și să‑l aruncăm într-unul din aceste puțuri. Vom spune că l‑a devorat o fiară sălbatică și vom vedea ce se va alege de visele lui.21Dar când Ruben a auzit lucrul acesta, a încercat să‑l scape din mâinile lor, zicând: – Să nu‑i luăm viața!22Apoi Ruben le‑a zis: – Să nu vărsați sânge! Aruncați‑l în acest puț din pustie, fără să vă întindeți mâna asupra lui. Spunea aceasta pentru ca să‑l scape din mâinile lor și să‑l aducă înapoi la tatăl său.23Când Iosif a ajuns la frații săi, aceștia l‑au dezbrăcat de tunica sa, de tunica decorată pe care o purta,24l‑au luat și l‑au aruncat într‑un puț. Puțul era gol, fără pic de apă în el.25Apoi s‑au așezat să mănânce pâine. Ridicându‑și ochii, s‑au uitat și iată că o caravană de‑a ismaeliților venea din Ghilad. Cămilele lor erau încărcate cu condimente, balsam și smirnă, și mergeau să le ducă în Egipt.26Iuda le‑a zis fraților săi: „Ce câștigăm dacă ne vom ucide fratele și‑i ascundem sângele?27Haideți să‑l vindem ismaeliților și să nu ne întindem mâna asupra lui, pentru că este fratele nostru, carne din carnea noastră.“ Frații săi au fost de acord.28Când s‑au apropiat negustorii midianiți[5], frații săi l‑au scos pe Iosif din puț și l‑au vândut ismaeliților cu douăzeci de șecheli[6] de argint. Aceștia l‑au dus pe Iosif în Egipt.29Ruben s‑a întors la puț și iată că Iosif nu mai era acolo. El și‑a sfâșiat hainele,30s‑a întors la frații săi și a zis: „Băiatul a dispărut. Ce mă fac?“31Dar ei au luat tunica lui Iosif, au înjunghiat un țap și au înmuiat tunica în sânge.32I‑au trimis tunica decorată tatălui lor, zicând: „Am găsit asta. Vezi dacă nu cumva este tunica fiului tău.“33El a recunoscut‑o și a zis: „Este tunica fiului meu. L‑a devorat o fiară sălbatică. Fără îndoială, Iosif a fost sfâșiat în bucăți.“34Atunci Iacov și‑a sfâșiat hainele, și‑a pus un sac pe coapse și l‑a bocit pe fiul său multe zile.35Toți fiii săi și toate fiicele sale au venit să‑l mângâie, dar el n‑a vrut să fie mângâiat, și a zis: „Bocind voi coborî la fiul meu în Locuința Morților[7].“ Așa l‑a plâns tatăl său.36Midianiții l‑au vândut pe Iosif în Egipt lui Potifar, un demnitar al lui Faraon și comandant al gărzii[8].
