1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; 2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant' house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. 3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. 6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. 8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. 9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again , This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. 10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. 11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. 12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. 14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. 15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. 16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. 18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: 19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: 20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, ( is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. 21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. 22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. 24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. 26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: 28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. 29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. 30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

1 Cei doi mesageri^[1] au ajuns seara la Sodoma. Lot stătea la poarta Sodomei, iar când i‑a văzut, s‑a ridicat să‑i întâmpine și s‑a plecat cu fața la pământ. 2 Apoi le‑a zis: – Stăpânii mei, iată, întoarceți‑vă, vă rog, la casa robului vostru, înnoptați aici și spălați‑vă picioarele. Mâine vă veți scula dis‑de‑dimineață și vă veți continua drumul. Ei i‑au răspuns: – Nu, ci vom înnopta în piață. 3 Dar Lot a insistat foarte mult, astfel încât ei s‑au întors la el și au intrat în casa lui. Lot le‑a pregătit masa, a copt azime, iar aceștia au mâncat. 4 Dar înainte să se culce ei, toți bărbații din toate colțurile cetății Sodoma, tineri și bătrâni, au înconjurat casa. 5 Ei l‑au strigat pe Lot și l‑au întrebat: – Unde sunt bărbații care au venit la tine în această seară? Scoate‑i afară la noi ca să‑i cunoaștem^[2]. 6 Lot a ieșit la ei la intrare, a închis ușa după el 7 și a zis: – Vă rog, fraților, nu faceți răul acesta! 8 Iată‑le pe cele două fiice ale mele care n‑au cunoscut bărbat. Lăsați‑mă, vă rog, să vi le aduc afară, și faceți‑le așa cum credeți că este bine.^[3] Dar să nu le faceți nimic acestor bărbați, căci ei au venit să se adăpostească la umbra acoperișului meu. 9 Însă ei au zis: – Dă‑te la o parte! Apoi au zis: – Omul acesta a venit aici ca străin, iar acum face pe judecătorul! Ei bine, ne vom purta cu tine mai rău decât cu ei. Ei l‑au împins cu putere pe Lot și s‑au apropiat să spargă ușa. 10 Dar bărbații dinăuntru și‑au întins mâinile, l‑au tras pe Lot la ei, în casă, și au încuiat ușa. 11 Iar pe bărbații care erau la ușa casei, atât pe cei tineri, cât și pe cei bătrâni, i‑au lovit cu orbire, astfel încât aceștia se chinuiau să găsească ușa. 12 Atunci acei bărbați i‑au zis lui Lot: „Cine mai este cu tine aici? Gineri, fii, fiice și pe oricine mai ai în cetate, scoate‑i din acest loc! 13 Căci urmează să‑l distrugem, deoarece plângerea împotriva acestui popor a ajuns atât de mare înaintea DOMNULUI, încât DOMNUL ne‑a trimis să‑l distrugem!“ 14 Atunci Lot a ieșit și le‑a spus ginerilor săi, care erau căsătoriți^[4] cu fiicele sale: „Ridicați‑vă și ieșiți din acest loc, pentru că DOMNUL urmează să distrugă cetatea.“ Dar el era, în ochii ginerilor săi, ca unul care glumește. 15 Când s‑au ivit zorii, mesagerii l‑au grăbit pe Lot, zicând: „Ridică‑te și ia‑ți soția și pe cele două fiice ale tale care se află aici, ca nu cumva să fii spulberat când cetatea va fi pedepsită“ 16 Dar el întârzia. Atunci bărbații aceia i‑au apucat de mână pe el, pe soția lui și pe cele două fiice ale sale, i‑au scos și i‑au lăsat în afara cetății, pentru că DOMNULUI I‑a fost milă de el. 17 Imediat ce i‑au scos afară, unul dintre ei a zis: – Scapă‑ți viața! Nu te uita înapoi și nu te opri nicăieri în câmpie. Scapă la munte, ca nu cumva să fii spulberat. 18 Lot le‑a zis: – Nu, Stăpâne, Te rog!^[5] 19 Iată, robul Tău a găsit bunăvoință înaintea Ta, și Tu ai arătat o mare îndurare^[6] față de mine, salvându‑mi viața. Nu pot să fug însă la munte, pentru că dezastrul mă va ajunge din urmă și voi muri. 20 Iată, cetatea aceasta este aproape, ca să fug acolo, și este mică. Te rog, lasă‑mă să fug acolo! Nu‑i așa că este mică? Astfel, viața îmi va fi salvată. 21 El a zis: – Iată că‑ți împlinesc și această cerere și nu voi distruge cetatea despre care ai vorbit. 22 Grăbește‑te, fugi acolo, pentru că nu pot face nimic până când nu ajungi acolo. De aceea cetatea a fost numită Țoar^[7]. 23 Răsărea soarele pe pământ când a intrat Lot în Țoar. 24 Atunci DOMNUL a făcut să plouă peste Sodoma și peste Gomora sulf și foc din ceruri de la DOMNUL. 25 Astfel, El a nimicit acele cetăți, toată câmpia, toți locuitorii cetăților, precum și ceea ce creștea pe pământ. 26 Soția lui Lot, care se afla în spatele lui, s‑a uitat înapoi și s‑a prefăcut într‑un stâlp de sare. 27 Avraam s‑a sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, s‑a dus la locul unde stătuse înaintea DOMNULUI 28 și a privit în jos spre suprafața Sodomei și Gomorei și spre toată suprafața acelui ținut.^[8] S‑a uitat și iată că un fum gros ca fumul unui cuptor se ridica de pe pământ.

29 Atunci când Dumnezeu a distrus cetățile din câmpie, Și‑a adus aminte de Avraam și l‑a scos pe Lot din mijlocul nenorocirii, când a nimicit cetățile în care locuise Lot. 30 Apoi Lot s‑a suit din Țoar și a locuit pe munte împreună cu cele două fiice ale sale, pentru că se temea să rămână în Țoar. A locuit într‑o peșteră împreună cu cele două fiice ale sale. 31 Cea întâi născută i‑a zis celei mai tinere: „Tatăl nostru este bătrân și nu este niciun bărbat pe pământ care să intre la noi, după obiceiul^[9] întregului pământ. 32 Vino să‑l facem pe tatăl nostru să bea vin și să ne culcăm cu el, ca să păstrăm sămânța prin tatăl nostru.“ 33 Astfel, l‑au făcut pe tatăl să bea vin în noaptea aceea, iar cea întâi născută s‑a dus și s‑a culcat cu tatăl ei. El n‑a știut nici când s‑a culcat ea, nici când s‑a sculat. 34 În ziua următoare, cea întâi născută i‑a zis celei mai tinere: „Iată, noaptea trecută m‑am culcat eu cu tatăl meu. Haide să‑i dăm vin și în noaptea aceasta. Apoi te vei duce și te vei culca tu cu el, ca să păstrăm sămânța prin tatăl nostru.“ 35 Ele l‑au făcut pe tatăl lor să bea vin și în seara aceea, apoi cea tânără s‑a ridicat și s‑a culcat cu el. El n‑a știut nici când s‑a culcat ea, nici când s‑a ridicat. 36 Astfel, cele două fiice ale lui Lot au rămas însărcinate prin tatăl lor. 37 Cea întâi născută a dat naștere unui fiu, căruia i‑a pus numele Moab^[10]. El este tatăl moabiților de astăzi. 38 Cea tânără a născut și ea un fiu căruia i‑a pus numele Ben‑Ami^[11]. El este tatăl fiilor lui Amon de astăzi.
