1For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:2But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.3For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:4But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.5For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:6Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.7But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:8So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.9For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.10Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:11As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,12That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.13For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.14For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:15Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:16Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.17But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.18Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.19For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?20For ye are our glory and joy.
1Voi înșivă știți, fraților, că venirea noastră la voi n‑a fost fără folos.2Deși suferiserăm și fuseserăm chinuiți în Filipi, așa cum știți, am avut totuși îndrăzneală în Dumnezeul nostru ca să vă vorbim despre Evanghelia lui Dumnezeu în mijlocul unei mari lupte.3Căci îndemnul nostru nu vine din rătăcire, nici din necurăție, nici din viclenie,4ci, așa cum am fost aprobați de Dumnezeu pentru a ni se încredința Evanghelia, tot așa vorbim și noi, nu ca să plăcem oamenilor, ci lui Dumnezeu, Care ne cercetează inimile.5Fiindcă, așa cum știți, nu ne‑am înfățișat printr‑o vorbire lingușitoare, nici nu ne‑am prefăcut, ca să ascundem lăcomia, – Dumnezeu este martor –,6nici n‑am căutat să primim slavă de la oameni – nici de la voi, nici de la alții.7Ca apostoli ai lui Cristos am fi putut fi o povară pentru voi, dar am fost blânzi cu voi, ca o doică ce are grijă de copiii săi.8Astfel, tânjind după binele vostru, găsisem potrivit să împărtășim cu voi nu doar Evanghelia lui Dumnezeu, ci și viețile noastre, fiindcă ne deveniserăți atât de dragi.9Căci vă aduceți aminte, fraților, de munca și osteneala noastră, când, în timp ce v‑am predicat Evanghelia lui Dumnezeu, am lucrat zi și noapte ca să nu fim o povară pentru niciunul dintre voi.10Voi sunteți martori – și Dumnezeu de asemenea – că purtarea noastră față de voi, cei care credeți, a fost sfântă, dreaptă și fără vină.11Așa cum știți, am fost pentru fiecare dintre voi, ca un tată pentru copiii săi,12îndemnându‑vă, încurajându‑vă și insistând să umblați într‑un mod vrednic de Dumnezeu, Care vă cheamă în Împărăția[1] și slava Lui.13De aceea și noi Îi mulțumim neîncetat lui Dumnezeu pentru că, atunci când ați primit Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, pe care l‑ați auzit de la noi, l‑ați primit nu ca pe un cuvânt al oamenilor, ci, așa cum și este de fapt, ca pe Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, care lucrează în voi, cei care credeți.14Căci voi, fraților, ați devenit urmași[2] ai bisericilor lui Dumnezeu care sunt în Cristos Isus, în Iudeea, pentru că și voi ați suferit, din partea propriilor voștri compatrioți, aceleași lucruri pe care le‑au suferit și ele din partea iudeilor,15care L‑au omorât pe Domnul Isus și pe profeți, iar pe noi ne‑au persecutat. Iudeii aceștia nu sunt plăcuți lui Dumnezeu și sunt împotrivitori față de toți oamenii,16căci ne împiedică să le vorbim neamurilor pentru a fi mântuite. Astfel, ei întotdeauna au măsura păcatelor lor plină. Dar, în cele din urmă, i‑a ajuns mânia lui Dumnezeu.[3]
Dorința lui Pavel de a‑i revedea pe tesaloniceni
17Însă fraților, atunci când am fost despărțiți de voi pentru puțină vreme, – în ce privește fața, dar nu cu inima –, am dorit cu și mai mare ardoare să vă vedem chipurile.18Am vrut să venim la voi, – cel puțin eu, Pavel, am vrut din nou și din nou –, dar Satan[4] ne‑a împiedicat.19Care este speranța sau bucuria sau coroana cu care ne lăudăm înaintea Domnului nostru Isus, la venirea Lui? Oare nu voi?20Într-adevăr, voi sunteți slava și bucuria noastră!
