1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! 3 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? 4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: 7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. 10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel. 11 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they. 13 And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it , (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;) 14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, 18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty , visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation . 19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. 20 And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word: 21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. 22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; 23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: 24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea. 26 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. 28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, 30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. 32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. 35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. 36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, 37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still . 39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here , and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. 41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper. 42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. 44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.

Streit über den Einzug ins Land

1 Da fuhr die ganze Gemeinde auf und schrie, und das Volk weinte in jener Nacht. (De 1:26) 2 Und alle Israeliten murrten gegen Mose und Aaron, und die ganze Gemeinde sprach zu ihnen: Ach dass wir gestorben wären in Ägyptenland oder in dieser Wüste, ach wären wir doch gestorben. (Ex 16:2; Ex 17:2; Nu 11:1) 3 Warum führt uns der HERR in dies Land, damit wir durchs Schwert fallen und unsere Frauen und unsere Kinder ein Raub werden? Ist’s nicht besser, wir ziehen wieder nach Ägypten? (Ps 106:24) 4 Und einer sprach zu dem andern: Lasst uns einen Hauptmann über uns setzen und wieder nach Ägypten ziehen! 5 Mose aber und Aaron fielen auf ihr Angesicht vor der ganzen Versammlung der Gemeinde der Israeliten. (Nu 16:4) 6 Und Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, die auch das Land erkundet hatten, zerrissen ihre Kleider (Nu 13:6; Nu 13:8; Nu 13:16; Nu 13:30)

7 und sprachen zu der ganzen Gemeinde der Israeliten: Das Land, das wir durchzogen haben, um es zu erkunden, ist sehr gut. 8 Wenn der HERR uns gnädig ist, so wird er uns in dies Land bringen und es uns geben, ein Land, darin Milch und Honig fließt. (Nu 13:27) 9 Fallt nur nicht ab vom HERRN und fürchtet euch vor dem Volk dieses Landes nicht, denn wir wollen sie fressen wie Brot. Es ist ihr Schutz von ihnen gewichen, der HERR aber ist mit uns. Fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen! (Nu 13:32) 10 Aber das ganze Volk sprach, man sollte sie steinigen. Da erschien die Herrlichkeit des HERRN über der Stiftshütte allen Israeliten. (Ex 16:10; Ex 17:4) 11 Und der HERR sprach zu Mose: Wie lange lästert mich dies Volk? Und wie lange wollen sie nicht an mich glauben trotz all der Zeichen, die ich unter ihnen getan habe? 12 Ich will sie mit der Pest schlagen und sie vertilgen und dich zu einem größeren und mächtigeren Volk machen als dieses. (Ex 32:10) 13 Mose aber sprach zu dem HERRN: Dann werden’s die Ägypter hören; denn du hast dies Volk mit deiner Kraft aus ihrer Mitte herausgeführt. 14 Auch wird man es sagen zu den Bewohnern dieses Landes, die da gehört haben, dass du, HERR, unter diesem Volk bist, dass du von Angesicht gesehen wirst und deine Wolke über ihnen steht und dass du, HERR, vor ihnen hergehst in der Wolkensäule am Tage und in der Feuersäule bei Nacht. (Ex 13:21; Nu 9:15) 15 Würdest du nun dies Volk töten wie einen Mann, so würden die andern Völker, die solch ein Gerücht über dich hören, sagen: 16 Der HERR vermochte es nicht, dies Volk in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen zu geben geschworen hatte; darum hat er sie hingeschlachtet in der Wüste. (De 9:28; Jos 7:8) 17 So lass nun deine Kraft, o Herr, groß werden, wie du gesagt hast: 18 »Der HERR ist geduldig und von großer Barmherzigkeit und vergibt Missetat und Übertretung, aber er lässt niemand ungestraft, sondern sucht heim die Missetat der Väter an den Kindern bis ins dritte und vierte Glied.« (Ex 34:6) 19 So vergib nun die Missetat dieses Volks nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit, wie du auch diesem Volk vergeben hast von Ägypten an bis hierher. (Ex 34:10) 20 Und der HERR sprach: Ich habe vergeben, wie du es erbeten hast. 21 Aber so wahr ich lebe und alle Welt der Herrlichkeit des HERRN voll werden soll: (Ex 9:16) 22 Alle die Männer, die meine Herrlichkeit und meine Zeichen gesehen haben, die ich getan habe in Ägypten und in der Wüste, und mich nun zehnmal versucht und meiner Stimme nicht gehorcht haben, 23 von denen soll keiner das Land sehen, das ich ihren Vätern zu geben geschworen habe; auch keiner soll es sehen, der mich gelästert hat. (Ps 95:11; Heb 3:11; Heb 3:17) 24 Nur meinen Knecht Kaleb, weil ein anderer Geist in ihm ist und er mir treu nachgefolgt ist, den will ich in das Land bringen, in das er gekommen ist, und seine Nachkommen sollen es einnehmen, (Jos 14:6; Jos 14:9) 25 während die Amalekiter und Kanaaniter in der Ebene wohnen bleiben. Morgen wendet euch und zieht in die Wüste auf dem Wege zum Schilfmeer! 26 Und der HERR redete mit Mose und Aaron und sprach: 27 Wie lange murrt diese böse Gemeinde gegen mich? Ich habe das Murren der Israeliten, womit sie gegen mich gemurrt haben, gehört. (Ex 32:34) 28 Darum sprich zu ihnen: So wahr ich lebe, spricht der HERR: Ich will mit euch tun, wie ihr vor meinen Ohren gesagt habt. 29 Eure Leiber sollen in dieser Wüste verfallen. Alle, die ihr gezählt seid von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, die ihr gegen mich gemurrt habt, (1Co 10:10) 30 wahrlich, ihr sollt nicht in das Land kommen, über das ich meine Hand zum Schwur erhoben habe, euch darin wohnen zu lassen, außer Kaleb, dem Sohn Jefunnes, und Josua, dem Sohn Nuns. 31 Eure Kinder aber, von denen ihr sagtet: Sie werden ein Raub sein, die will ich hineinbringen, dass sie das Land kennenlernen, das ihr verwerft. 32 Aber eure eigenen Leiber sollen in dieser Wüste verfallen. 33 Und eure Kinder sollen Hirten sein in der Wüste vierzig Jahre und eure Untreue tragen, bis eure Leiber aufgerieben sind in der Wüste. (Ex 16:35; De 2:7; De 8:4) 34 Nach der Zahl der vierzig Tage, in denen ihr das Land erkundet habt – je ein Tag soll ein Jahr gelten –, sollt ihr vierzig Jahre eure Schuld tragen, auf dass ihr innewerdet, was es sei, wenn ich mich abwende. (Nu 32:13; Jer 2:19) 35 Ich, der HERR, habe es gesagt und wahrlich, das will ich auch tun mit dieser ganzen bösen Gemeinde, die sich gegen mich empört hat. In dieser Wüste sollen sie aufgerieben werden und dort sterben. 36 Die Männer aber, die Mose ausgesandt hatte, um das Land zu erkunden, und die zurückgekommen waren und die ganze Gemeinde gegen ihn zum Murren verleitet hatten, (1Co 10:5; 1Co 10:10; Jud 1:5) 37 diese Männer starben durch eine Plage vor dem HERRN, weil sie über das Land ein böses Gerücht aufbrachten. 38 Aber Josua, der Sohn Nuns, und Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, blieben am Leben von den Männern, die gegangen waren, um das Land zu erkunden.

Kampf gegen Amalek und Kanaan

39 Als Mose diese Worte allen Israeliten sagte, da trauerte das Volk sehr. 40 Und sie machten sich früh am Morgen auf und zogen auf die Höhe des Gebirges und sprachen: Hier sind wir und wollen hinaufziehen in das Land, von dem der HERR geredet hat; denn wir haben gesündigt. (De 1:41) 41 Mose aber sprach: Warum wollt ihr das Wort des HERRN übertreten? Es wird euch nicht gelingen. 42 Zieht nicht hinauf – denn der HERR ist nicht unter euch –, dass ihr nicht geschlagen werdet vor euren Feinden. 43 Denn die Amalekiter und Kanaaniter stehen euch dort gegenüber, und ihr werdet durchs Schwert fallen, weil ihr euch vom HERRN abgekehrt habt, und der HERR wird nicht mit euch sein. 44 Aber sie waren so vermessen und zogen hinauf auf die Höhe des Gebirges; aber die Lade des Bundes des HERRN und Mose wichen nicht aus dem Lager. 45 Da kamen die Amalekiter und Kanaaniter, die auf dem Gebirge wohnten, herab und schlugen und zersprengten sie bis nach Horma.
