1Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?2If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.3Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,4Have we not power to eat and to drink?5Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?6Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?7Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?8Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?9For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.13Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?14Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.15But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.16For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!17For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.18What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.19For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.20And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;21To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.22To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.23And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
Anspruch der Diener Gottes auf Unterhalt – Des Apostels Verzicht darauf
1Bin ich nicht frei? Bin ich nicht Apostel? Habe ich nicht Jesus, unseren Herrn, gesehen? Seid nicht ihr mein Werk im Herrn? (Ac 22:14; 1Co 4:15; 1Co 9:19; 1Co 15:8)2Wenn ich für andere kein Apostel bin, so bin ich es doch für euch; denn das Siegel meines Apostelamtes seid ihr im Herrn. (2Co 3:2; 2Co 12:12)3Meine Verteidigung vor denen, die mich zur Untersuchung ziehen, ist diese: (2Co 12:19)4Haben wir etwa kein Recht[1], zu essen und zu trinken? (Mt 10:10; 2Th 3:9)5Haben wir etwa kein Recht[2], eine Schwester als Frau mitzunehmen wie die übrigen Apostel und die Brüder des Herrn und Kephas[3]? (Lu 4:38; Joh 1:42)6Oder haben allein ich und Barnabas kein Recht[4], nicht zu arbeiten? (Ac 4:36; 1Th 2:6)7Wer tut jemals Kriegsdienste auf eigenen Sold? Wer pflanzt einen Weinberg und isst dessen Frucht nicht? Oder wer hütet eine Herde und isst nicht von der Milch der Herde? (2Ti 2:6)8Rede ich dies etwa nach Menschen⟨weise⟩, oder sagt das nicht auch das Gesetz?9Denn in dem Gesetz Moses steht geschrieben: »Du sollst dem Ochsen, der da drischt, nicht das Maul verbinden«. Ist Gott etwa um die Ochsen besorgt? (De 25:4; 1Ti 5:18)10Oder spricht er ⟨nicht⟩ durchaus um unsertwillen? Denn es ist um unsertwillen geschrieben, dass der Pflüger auf Hoffnung pflügen und der Dreschende ⟨dreschen⟩ soll auf Hoffnung, ⟨am Ertrag⟩ teilzuhaben.11Wenn wir euch das Geistliche gesät haben, was ist es da Großes, wenn wir von euch das Irdische[5] ernten? (Ro 15:27; Ga 6:6)12Wenn andere an dem Recht[6] über euch Anteil haben, nicht erst recht wir? Wir haben aber von diesem Recht[7] keinen Gebrauch gemacht, sondern wir ertragen alles, damit wir dem Evangelium Christi kein Hindernis bereiten. (Ac 18:3; 2Co 11:7)13Wisst ihr nicht, dass die, welche die heiligen Dienste tun, aus dem Tempel[8] essen, dass die, welche am Altar tätig sind, Anteil am Altar haben? (Nu 18:10; De 18:1)14So hat auch der Herr denen, die das Evangelium verkündigen, verordnet, vom Evangelium zu leben. (Lu 10:7)15Ich aber habe von keinem dieser Dinge Gebrauch gemacht. Ich habe dies jedoch nicht geschrieben, damit es so mit mir geschieht; denn es wäre mir besser, zu sterben, als – meinen Ruhm soll mir niemand zunichtemachen. (1Co 4:12; 2Co 11:9)16Denn wenn ich das Evangelium verkündige, so habe ich keinen Ruhm, denn ein Zwang liegt auf mir. Denn wehe mir, wenn ich das Evangelium nicht verkündigte! (Ac 4:20; Ro 1:14)17Wenn ich dies nämlich freiwillig tue, so habe ich Lohn ⟨zu erwarten⟩, wenn aber unfreiwillig, so bin ich ⟨nur⟩ mit einer Verwaltung betraut. (1Pe 5:2)18Was ist nun mein Lohn? Dass ich bei meiner Verkündigung[9] das Evangelium kostenfrei mache, sodass ich von meinem Recht[10] am Evangelium keinen Gebrauch mache.
Der Apostel als aller Menschen Sklave und als Wettkämpfer
19Denn obwohl ich allen gegenüber frei bin, habe ich mich allen zum Sklaven gemacht, damit ich so viele wie möglich[11] gewinne. (1Co 9:1)20Und ich bin den Juden wie ein Jude geworden, damit ich Juden gewinne; denen, die unter Gesetz sind, wie einer unter Gesetz – obwohl ich selbst nicht unter Gesetz bin –, damit ich die, welche unter Gesetz sind, gewinne; (Ac 16:3; Ac 21:24)21denen, die ohne Gesetz sind, wie einer ohne Gesetz[12] – obwohl ich nicht ohne Gesetz vor Gott bin, sondern unter dem Gesetz Christi –, damit ich die, welche ohne Gesetz sind, gewinne. (Ga 3:5)22Den Schwachen bin ich ein Schwacher geworden, damit ich die Schwachen gewinne. Ich bin allen alles geworden, damit ich auf alle Weise einige rette. (Ro 11:14; Ro 15:1; 1Co 8:13; 1Co 10:33)23Ich tue aber alles um des Evangeliums willen, um an ihm Anteil zu bekommen.24Wisst ihr nicht, dass die, welche in der Rennbahn laufen, zwar alle laufen, aber einer den Preis empfängt? Lauft so, dass ihr ihn erlangt! (Php 3:14; Col 2:18; Heb 12:1)25Jeder aber, der kämpft, ist enthaltsam in allem; jene freilich, damit sie einen vergänglichen Siegeskranz empfangen, wir aber einen unvergänglichen. (2Ti 2:4; 2Ti 4:8; 1Pe 5:4)26Ich laufe nun so, nicht wie ins Ungewisse; ich kämpfe so, nicht wie einer, der in die Luft schlägt;27sondern ich zerschlage meinen Leib und knechte[13] ihn, damit ich nicht, nachdem ich anderen gepredigt habe, selbst verwerflich werde.
