1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

1 Jesus fortsatte: ”När ni gör det som är gott, se då till att ni inte gör det bara för att människor ska lägga märke till er, för annars har ni ingen lön att vänta från er Far i himlen. 2 När ni ger en gåva till en nödlidande, ropa då inte ut det till andra. Var inte som de falska människor som bara låtsas lyda Gud. De basunerar ut sina goda gärningar i synagogorna^[1] och på gatorna för att få beröm! Jag försäkrar er att de redan har fått ut sin lön. 3-4 Nej, om du hjälper någon, så gör det i hemlighet. Din vänstra hand ska inte veta vad den högra gör. Då kommer din Far, som ser allt, att belöna dig.

Om bön

5 När ni ber, ska ni inte visa upp er för andra. Var inte som de falska människor som bara låtsas lyda Gud. De älskar att be offentligt i gathörnen och i synagogorna^[2] där alla kan se dem. Jag försäkrar er att de redan har fått ut sin lön. 6 Nej, när du ber, gå då istället in i ditt rum och stäng dörren om dig. Låt din bön vara en hemlighet mellan dig och din Far i himlen. Han vet allt och ska belöna dig. 7 Rabbla inte upp samma bön gång på gång, som de människor gör som inte känner Gud. De tror att bönen har större chans att bli besvarad om de använder många ord. 8 Var inte som de, för er Far vet precis vad ni behöver, innan ni ens ber honom om det! 9 Be istället så här: Vår Far i himlen, vi ber att du ska bli ärad. 10 Kom och regera bland oss,^[3] så att din vilja sker här på jorden på samma sätt som den sker i himlen. 11 Ge oss den mat vi behöver, dag för dag, 12 och förlåt oss det vi har gjort fel mot dig, liksom vi förlåter dem som har gjort fel mot oss. 13 Och låt oss inte utsättas för frestelser, utan rädda oss från den Onde^[4]. 14 Ja, om ni förlåter dem som har gjort fel mot er, ska er Far i himlen också förlåta er. 15 Men om ni vägrar att förlåta andra, kommer han inte att förlåta er era synder.

Om fasta

16 När ni fastar^[5], visa då inte upp er för andra. Var inte som de falska människor som bara låtsas lyda Gud. De ser dystra och ovårdade ut bara för att folk ska lägga märke till att de fastar. Jag försäkrar er att de redan har fått ut sin lön. 17 Nej, när du fastar ska du tvätta dig och sköta om ditt hår precis som vanligt. 18 Låt fastan vara en hemlighet mellan dig och din Far i himlen. Han vet allt och ska belöna dig.

Om pengar

19 Samla inte rikedomar här på jorden, där de förlorar sitt värde och lätt kan bli stulna. 20 Samla dina skatter i himlen, där de behåller sitt värde och är säkra för tjuvar. 21 För om din skatt finns i himlen, då kommer också ditt hjärta och dina tankar att vara där. 22 Ögat är kroppens lampa . Om ditt öga är friskt, så släpper det in ljuset. 23 Men om ditt öga är förstört stänger det ute ljuset, så att det blir mörkt i ditt inre. Om det ljus du tror dig ha i själva verket är mörker, då är ditt mörker verkligen nattsvart!^[6] 24 Ingen kan tjäna två herrar samtidigt, för antingen kommer han att hata den förste och älska den andre, eller att älska den förste och hata den andre. Ni måste alltså välja. Ni kan inte tjäna Gud och samtidigt älska pengar.^[7]

Om att oroa sig

25 Därför säger jag: Oroa er inte för hur ni ska klara livet, hur ni ska få mat och dryck eller kläder att ta på er. Nog finns det viktigare saker i livet än mat och dryck och kläder? 26 Se på fåglarna! De oroar sig inte för vad de ska äta. De sår inte och skördar inte och samlar inte i några lador, men er Far i himlen ger dem mat ändå. Är ni inte mycket mer värda för honom än vad fåglarna är? 27 Vad tjänar det till att oroa sig? Kan det förlänga era liv med en enda timma? Naturligtvis inte! 28 Och varför oroar ni er för kläder? Se på liljorna på ängen. De arbetar inte och tillverkar inga kläder. 29 Ändå försäkrar jag er, att inte ens kung Salomo i all sin prakt var så vackert klädd som de. 30 Men om Gud nu ger så underbara kläder åt gräset, som idag står på ängen och imorgon kastas på elden, skulle han då inte ordna kläder åt er? Litar ni fortfarande så lite på Gud? 31-32 Oroa er alltså inte för vad ni ska äta och dricka, eller för vad ni ska ta på er. Gör inte som de människor som inte känner Gud. De jagar efter allt detta och oroar sig hela tiden. Men er Far i himlen vet redan vad ni behöver. 33 Han kommer att ge er allt detta, om ni först och främst strävar efter att göra hans vilja, så att han får regera bland er.^[8] 34 Oroa er alltså inte för morgondagen, utan lös problemen den dag de verkligen dyker upp. En dags bekymmer räcker mer än väl.”
