A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.21Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:22But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;24Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.25Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.26Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.29And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.31It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:32But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.33Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:34But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:35Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;45That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.46For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
1-2En dag när Jesus såg folkmassorna gick han upp på ett berg tillsammans med sina efterföljare, och han satte sig ner och började undervisa dem. Han sa:3”Lyckliga är de som inser att de behöver Gud, för de får vara Guds eget folk.[1]4Lyckliga är de som sörjer, för de ska bli tröstade.5Lyckliga är de ödmjuka, för hela världen tillhör dem.6Lyckliga är de som hungrar och törstar efter att göra Guds vilja,[2] för de ska bli mättade.7Lyckliga är de som visar medlidande, för de ska få medlidande från Gud.8Lyckliga är de som av hela hjärtat söker Gud,[3] för de ska få se honom.9Lyckliga är de som strävar efter frid, för de ska kallas Guds barn.10Lyckliga är de som förföljs därför att de gör Guds vilja, för de får vara Guds eget folk.[4]11Ja, ni är lyckliga när man hånar och förföljer er och ljuger om er därför att ni är mina efterföljare.12Jubla och var glada, för Gud ska belöna er. Kom ihåg att profeterna som förr i tiden framförde Guds budskap[5] också blev förföljda.
Salt och ljus
13Ni är det salt som bevarar världen från förruttnelse. Men till vilken nytta är salt om det har förlorat sin kraft?[6] Kan man få det salt igen? Nej, det duger inte till något annat än att kastas ut och trampas ner av människorna.14Ni är det ljus som lyser upp världen. Ni liknar en stad uppe på ett berg. En stad uppe på ett berg är synlig för alla.15När man tänder en lampa så täcker man inte över den, utan tvärtom ställer man den så att den lyser för alla i huset.16På samma sätt ska ert ljus lysa för människorna, så att de ser allt gott ni gör och hyllar er Far i himlen.
Om Moses lag
17Tro inte att jag har kommit för att upphäva det Gud har sagt genom Moses lag och profeterna.[7] Nej, jag har kommit för att uppfylla det och göra det till verklighet.18Jag försäkrar er, att varje ord i lagen ska gälla så länge himlen och jorden finns kvar och tills allt som Gud har förutsagt har inträffat.19Den som bryter mot minsta lilla bud i lagen, och lär andra att göra likadant, han ska betyda minst bland dem som får vara Guds eget folk. Men den som håller lagen och lär andra att göra det, han ska få stor betydelse bland Guds eget folk.[8]20Men jag varnar er, att om ni inte lyckas följa Guds vilja bättre än vad laglärarna[9] och fariseerna gör, så kommer ni överhuvudtaget inte att få tillhöra Guds eget folk.
Om ovänskap
21Ni har hört att det står i Moses lag: ’Du ska inte mörda,[10] och den som mördar någon ska dömas.’22Men jag säger: Det räcker med att du blir arg på någon, så ska du dömas. Kallar du en person för idiot, så ska du ställas inför domstol, och förbannar du någon så väntar dig helvetets eld.23Om du därför står inför altaret i templet för att bära fram ett offer åt Gud och plötsligt kommer ihåg att någon människa har något emot dig,24så lägg ner ditt offer framför altaret och gå och gör upp med den personen . Kom sedan och bär fram ditt offer till Gud.25Om någon anklagar dig för något, så skynda dig att komma överens med din motpart redan innan ni är framme vid domstolen. Annars kanske han överlämnar dig till domaren, som sedan låter vakten ta hand om dig och sätta dig i fängelse.26Och jag försäkrar dig att du måste stanna där tills du betalt hela bötesbeloppet.
Om otrohet
27Ni har hört att det står i Moses lag: ’Du ska inte vara otrogen i ditt äktenskap.’[11]28Men jag säger: den som ser på en kvinna med begär i blicken har redan varit otrogen med henne i sitt hjärta.29Om ditt högra öga får dig att synda, så riv ut det och kasta det ifrån dig. Det är bättre att en del av din kropp förstörs än att hela du kastas i helvetet.30Och om din hand får dig att synda så hugg av den och kasta bort den, även om det skulle råka vara din högra hand! Det är bättre att en del av din kropp förstörs än att hela du kommer till helvetet.[12]
Om skilsmässa
31Det står i Moses lag: ’Om någon vill skilja sig från sin fru, så kan han göra det genom att ge henne ett intyg som bevis på skilsmässan.’[13]32Men jag säger: Den man som skiljer sig från sin fru, utan att hon varit otrogen, han blir orsak till att hon verkligen kan vara otrogen. Och den som gifter sig med en frånskild kvinna gör så att hon är otrogen.[14]
Om löften
33Ni har också hört att det står i Moses lag: ’Du ska inte bryta en ed som du har svurit, utan du ska hålla allt som du har lovat inför Gud.’[15]34Men jag säger: svär överhuvudtaget inga eder! Om du säger: ’Jag svär vid himlen’ så har du svurit inför Gud, för himlen är Guds tron.35Om du säger: ’Jag svär vid jorden’, så har du svurit inför Gud, för jorden är pallen under hans fötter. Och om du säger: ’Jag svär vid Jerusalem’, så har du svurit inför Gud, för Jerusalem är Guds stad.[16]36Säg inte heller: ’Det sätter jag huvudet i pant på!’ för du kan inte göra ett enda hårstrå vare sig vitt eller svart.37Säg bara: ’Ja, det vill jag’ eller ’Nej, det vill jag inte’. Det räcker. Tanken att ge mer tyngd åt orden kommer från den Onde.
Om hämnd
38Ni har hört att det står i Moses lag: ’Om ett öga skadas, måste den skyldige betala med sitt eget öga. Och om en tand skadas, ska han betala med sin egen tand.’[17]39Men jag säger: Möt inte våld med våld. Slår någon dig på ena kinden, så vänd också den andra mot honom.40Ställs du inför domstol och man tar ifrån dig din skjorta, så ge dem ytterplagget också.41Befaller någon dig att bära hans packning en mil, så bär den två.42Ge till den som ber dig och vänd inte ryggen åt den som vill låna av dig.
Om att älska sina fiender
43Ni har hört att det står i Moses lag: ’Du ska älska din medmänniska[18] och hata din fiende.’44Men jag säger: Älska era fiender! Be för dem som förföljer er!45Då visar ni att ni verkligen är barn till er Far i himlen. För han låter solen skina och regnet falla på både onda och goda, både på dem som följer hans vilja och dem som inte gör det.46Vad är det för märkvärdigt med att ni älskar dem som älskar er? Det gör ju tullindrivarna[19] också.47Och om ni hälsar vänligt på era vänner men inte på någon annan, vad är det för märkvärdigt med det? Det gör ju de som inte känner Gud också.48Var lika goda som er Far i himlen, han som är fullständigt god.[20]”
