1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. 4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. 5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where. 7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; 8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. 9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him. 10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. 12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. 14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down. 16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets. 18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? 19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. 20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. 21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; 22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. 28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. 29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. 30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. 36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. 37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. 38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. 41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, 44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. 45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. 46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. 47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, 48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. 49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. 51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. 57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Jesus sänder ut sina tolv närmaste efterföljare

1 En dag kallade Jesus samman sina tolv närmaste efterföljare och gav dem makt att driva ut alla slags onda andar och kraft att bota sjukdomar. 2 Sedan sände han ut dem för att berätta att Gud vill rädda människor och göra dem till sitt eget folk, och för att bota sjuka. 3 Han sa till dem: ”Ta inte med er något på vägen, ingen vandringsstav eller väska, inte mat eller pengar, och inga extra kläder. 4 När ni har blivit erbjudna att övernatta hos någon, stanna då där tills ni fortsätter till nästa stad. 5 Men om människorna i en stad inte vill ta emot er eller lyssna till er, så gå bara därifrån och bekymra er inte mer om dem. Skaka stadens damm av era fötter som ett tecken på att de själva får ta ansvar för vad de gjort.” 6 Så började Jesus efterföljare att vandra från plats till plats och spred det glada budskapet och botade sjuka.

Ryktet om Jesus gör Herodes orolig

7 När kung Herodes fick höra talas om alla de under Jesus gjorde, blev han orolig och visste inte vad han skulle tro, för somliga sa att det var Johannes döparen som hade uppstått från de döda. 8 Några sa att det var Elia^[1] som visade sig, och andra att någon annan av profeterna, som förr i tiden framförde Guds budskap, hade uppstått igen. 9 Herodes sa: ”Jag lät halshugga Johannes. Men tänk om den här mannen som jag hör så mycket om ändå är Johannes?” Och han försökte få träffa Jesus.

Jesus ger mat åt mer än 5 000 personer

10 De tolv efterföljare som Jesus hade sänt ut kom nu tillbaka från sin vandring, och de rapporterade allt de hade gjort. Jesus drog sig undan med dem till staden Betsaida, 11 men folket fick reda på vart han var på väg och följde efter. Och än en gång tog han emot folket och talade till dem om att Gud vill rädda människor och göra dem till sitt eget folk,^[2] och han botade alla som behövde hjälp. 12 När det började bli kväll kom de tolv efterföljarna och sa: ”Skicka iväg folket, så att de kan gå till byarna och gårdarna här i närheten och köpa mat och ordna någonstans att sova. På den här öde platsen finns det ju ingenting.” 13 Men Jesus svarade: ”Ni själva kan ge dem mat!””Hur ska det gå till?” undrade de. ”Allt vi har är fem bröd och två fiskar. Menar du att vi ska gå och köpa mat så att det räcker till alla de här människorna?” 14 Det var omkring 5 000 män där, förutom kvinnor och barn. ”Be dem bara att slå sig ner i grupper på 50 personer”, svarade Jesus. 15 Och då gjorde hans efterföljare som han sa och lät alla slå sig ner. 16 Sedan tog Jesus de fem bröden och de två fiskarna och såg upp mot himlen och tackade Gud för dem. Efter det bröt han bröden och fiskarna i bitar och gav åt sina efterföljare för att de skulle ge åt folket. 17 Alla åt och blev mätta, och när man samlade ihop det som var över, blev det tolv fulla korgar.

Petrus kallar Jesus för Messias, den utlovade kungen

18 En gång när Jesus hade dragit sig undan för att be, och hans efterföljare var med honom, frågade han dem: ”Vem säger folket att jag är?” 19 ”Somliga säger att du är Johannes döparen”, svarade de, ”och några att du är Elia^[3]. Andra säger att någon annan av profeterna, som förr i tiden framförde Guds budskap, har uppstått från de döda.” 20 Då frågade han dem: ”Vem tror ni att jag är?”Petrus svarade: ”Du är Messias, den kung som Gud har lovat sända.”

Jesus förutsäger för första gången att han ska dö

21 Jesus gav dem då stränga order att inte tala om detta för någon, 22 och förklarade: ”Jag, Människosonen^[4], måste lida mycket. Folkets ledare och översteprästerna och laglärarna kommer att ta avstånd från mig och se till att jag dödas, men på den tredje dagen ska jag uppstå från de döda igen.” 23 Sedan sa han till allt folket: ”Om någon vill bli min efterföljare, så kan han inte längre tänka på sig själv, utan måste följa mitt exempel och alltid vara beredd att dö. 24 Ja, den som klamrar sig fast vid livet kommer till sist att förlora det, men den som förlorar sitt liv för min skull, han ska rädda det. 25 Vad vinner en människa om hela världen blir hennes, om hon samtidigt förlorar det eviga livet? 26 Den som skäms för mig och för de ord jag talar, honom ska jag, Människosonen^[5], skämmas för, när jag återvänder i min och min Fars härlighet tillsammans med hans änglar. 27 Men tro mig: några av er som står här just nu kommer inte att dö förrän ni har sett Gud i hans kungliga makt.^[6]”

Jesus förvandlas på berget

28 Ungefär en vecka senare tog Jesus med sig Petrus, Jakob och Johannes och gick upp på ett berg för att be. 29 Och medan han bad förvandlades hans ansikte, och hans kläder blev bländande vita. 30 Sedan visade sig två män som stod och talade med honom. Det var Mose och Elia,^[7] 31 och även de strålade av ett himmelskt ljus, och de talade om hur Jesus enligt Guds plan skulle dö i Jerusalem. 32 Petrus och de båda andra hade varit så trötta att de somnat medan Jesus bad. Men nu vaknade de alltså och fick se Jesus stå där omstrålad av ljus tillsammans med de två männen. 33 När Mose och Elia gjorde sig beredda att lämna Jesus, sa Petrus till Jesus: ”Mästare, det här är ett fantastiskt ställe att vara på! Låt oss bygga tre hyddor, en åt dig och en åt Mose och en åt Elia!” Han var så förvirrad att han inte visste vad han sa. 34 Men under tiden han talade blev de insvepta i ett moln som sänkte sig ner över dem, och de blev alldeles förskräckta. 35 Sedan hördes en röst från molnet som sa: ”Detta är min Son, min utvalde^[8]. Lyssna på honom.” 36 Och när rösten hade tystnat stod Jesus ensam kvar. Men hans efterföljare höll tyst om vad de hade sett, och berättade det inte för någon förrän långt senare.

Jesus botar en pojke som är besatt av en ond ande

37 Nästa dag, när de kom ner från berget, möttes de av en stor mängd människor. 38 Och en man i folkhopen ropade till Jesus: ”Mästare, hjälp min son, han är mitt enda barn. 39 En ond ande brukar attackera honom, så att han skriker och vrider sig i kramper tills han får fradga runt munnen. När attacken äntligen är över, har anden nästan tagit död på honom. 40 Jag bad dina efterföljare att driva ut den onda anden, men de klarade det inte!” 41 ”Ni hopplösa människor som inte vill tro!” utbrast Jesus. ”Hur länge måste jag vara hos er och stå ut med er? Ta hit din son.” 42 Och medan pojken var på väg mot Jesus, knuffade den onda anden omkull honom och slet och ryckte våldsamt i honom. Men Jesus befallde den onda anden att lämna pojken, och han botade honom och överlämnade honom till hans pappa. 43 Alla som var med blev helt förundrade över Guds oerhörda makt och kraft. Medan folket fortfarande stod där helt häpna över allt han gjorde, sa Jesus till sina efterföljare: 44 ”Lyssna noga, och kom ihåg vad jag nu säger: Jag, Människosonen^[9], ska bli förrådd och överlämnad till människorna.” 45 Men hans efterföljare förstod inte vad han talade om. Den verkliga betydelsen av det som Jesus förutsa var gömd för dem, och de vågade inte fråga vad han menade.

Jesus förklarar vem som är mest betydelsefull

46 Jesus efterföljare började nu diskutera med varandra om vem av dem som var mest betydelsefull. 47 Men Jesus förstod vad som rörde sig i deras tankar. Därför tog han ett barn och ställde det bredvid sig 48 och sa till dem: ”Den som tar emot det här barnet därför att det tillhör mig, han tar emot mig! Och den som tar emot mig, han tar emot Gud, eftersom Gud har sänt mig. Den som anser sig själv vara liten och obetydlig, han är mest betydelsefull.”

Jesus efterföljare förbjuder en man att göra under i Jesus namn

49 Johannes, en av Jesus efterföljare, sa: ”Mästare, vi såg en man som drev ut onda andar i ditt namn, men eftersom han inte var en av oss försökte vi stoppa honom.” 50 Då sa Jesus till Johannes: ”Låt honom hålla på, för den som inte är mot er, han är för er.”

Motstånd i Samarien

51 Den tid hade nu kommit då Gud bestämt att Jesus skulle återvända till honom i himlen, och Jesus beslöt därför att börja gå mot Jerusalem. 52 En dag skickade han några efterföljare i förväg för att ordna med övernattning i en samarisk^[10] by. 53 Men eftersom Jesus var på väg mot Jerusalem ville man inte ha med honom att göra. 54 När Jesus båda efterföljare Jakob och Johannes fick reda på vad som hade hänt, blev de upprörda och sa: ”Herre, ska vi befalla att eld kommer ner från himlen och bränner upp dem?”^[11] 55 Men Jesus vände sig om och tillrättavisade dem.^[12] 56 Sedan gick de vidare till en annan by.

Priset för att följa Jesus

57 Medan de vandrade på vägen sa en man till Jesus: ”Jag vill följa dig vart du än går.” 58 Jesus svarade: ”Du måste förstå, att rävarna har lyor och fåglarna har bon, men jag, Människosonen^[13], har ingen plats där jag kan vila ut.” 59 Till en annan sa han: ”Kom och bli min efterföljare!” Men mannen svarade: ”Låt mig först gå hem och begrava min pappa.”^[14] 60 Då sa Jesus: ”Låt dem som är andligt döda^[15] begrava sina döda. Din uppgift är att sprida budskapet om att Gud vill rädda människor och göra dem till sitt eget folk.” 61 En annan man sa: ”Ja, Herre, jag ska komma, men låt mig först ta farväl av dem därhemma.” 62 Då sa Jesus till honom: ”Den som gör sig klar att arbeta, men sedan låter sig lockas av annat, han kan inte tjäna Gud.^[16]”
