1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Jesus föds i Betlehem

1 Vid den här tiden hade den romerska kejsaren Augustus gett order om att alla invånare i romarriket skulle registreras, så att de kunde betala skatt. 2 Det var den första skatteregistreringen, och den gjordes när Quirinius var landshövding i Syrien. 3 Var och en var då tvungen att resa till sin hemstad för att registrera sig. 4 Och eftersom Josef tillhörde kung Davids släkt, måste han resa från staden Nasaret i Galileen till Betlehem i Judeen, kung Davids stad. 5 Han tog med sig Maria, den flicka han var förlovad^[1] med, och som nu väntade barn. 6 Men medan de var i Betlehem blev det dags för henne att föda, 7 och hon födde sitt första barn, en pojke. Hon lindade honom sedan med tygstycken^[2] och la honom i djurens krubba, för det fanns inte plats för dem inne i värdshuset.

Några herdar besöker Jesus

8 Samma natt var några herdar ute och vaktade sina får på fälten utanför staden. 9 Då stod plötsligt en ängel från Herren Gud framför dem, och Herrens härlighet lyste omkring dem. De blev fruktansvärt rädda, 10 men ängeln lugnade dem och sa: ”Var inte rädda! Jag kommer till er med ett budskap som gäller hela ert folk, och som ska göra alla mycket glada! 11 Inatt har den som ska rädda er fötts i Betlehem. Han är Messias, den utlovade kungen, Herren. 12 Ni kommer att känna igen honom på att han är lindad med tygstycken och ligger i en krubba.” 13 Och plötsligt var ängeln omgiven av en stor kör av änglar från himlen som hyllade Herren Gud och sjöng: 14 ”Ära till Gud i himlen, och frid på jorden, till dem som gör Gud glad.” 15 När änglarna hade farit tillbaka upp till himlen, sa herdarna till varandra: ”Kom! Vi måste gå till Betlehem och se det fantastiska som har hänt, och som Herren har låtit oss få veta!” 16 Så sprang de in till staden, och fann Maria och Josef och det nyfödda barnet som låg i krubban. 17 Och när de hade sett barnet, berättade de för alla vad ängeln hade sagt om honom. 18 Och alla förvånades över herdarnas berättelse, 19 men Maria la varje ord på minnet och tänkte ofta på det. 20 Herdarna vände sedan tillbaka och hyllade och ärade Gud för allt de hade fått se och höra. För allt var precis så som ängeln hade berättat för dem. 21 Åtta dagar senare, när pojken skulle omskäras, fick han heta Jesus, det namn som ängeln gav honom innan hans mamma blev gravid.

Maria och Josef tar med Jesus till templet

22 När det sedan var dags för föräldrarnas reningsoffer^[3] enligt Moses lag, tog de med Jesus till templet i Jerusalem för att bära fram honom inför Herren Gud. 23 Herren har ju sagt i sin lag att om en kvinnas första barn är en pojke, ska han tillhöra Herren.^[4] 24 Samtidigt bar föräldrarna fram offret, som enligt lagen skulle vara ett par turturduvor eller två unga duvor. 25 Vid den här tiden bodde en man som hette Symeon i Jerusalem, en mycket god man som levde efter Guds vilja och var fylld av Guds heliga Ande. Han väntade ivrigt på att Israels räddare skulle komma. 26 Guds heliga Ande hade gjort klart för honom att han inte skulle dö förrän han hade sett Messias, den kung som Herren Gud hade lovat sända. 27 Just den här dagen hade Guds Ande uppmanat Symeon att gå till templet, så när Maria och Josef kom för att bära fram Jesus inför Herren Gud precis som lagen krävde, 28 var Symeon där. Och han tog barnet i sin famn och tackade Gud och sa: 29 ”Herre, nu kan jag dö i frid, precis som du har lovat! 30-31 För nu har jag med egna ögon sett honom som du har bestämt ska rädda världen. 32 Han är det ljus som ska göra dig synlig för alla folk och ge ära åt ditt folk Israel.” 33 Josef och Maria var mycket förvånade över vad han sa om Jesus. 34 Och Symeon bad Gud att ge dem allt gott och sa till Maria: ”Många i Israel kommer att stöta bort det här barnet, och det ska bli deras olycka. Men för många ska han bli till stor glädje. Han ska vara ett tecken man strider om. 35 Ja, också du ska få lida, du ska känna det som om någon huggit dig i hjärtat. Men allt detta ska avslöja vad som verkligen gömmer sig i människors inre.” 36-37 En gammal kvinna, som hette Hanna och som Gud hade gett förmågan att framföra budskap från honom, var också i templet. Hon var dotter till Fanuel från Ashers stam. Hon hade varit gift i sju år när hon var ung, men hennes man hade dött, och hon var nu 84 år. Hon lämnade aldrig templet utan var där dag och natt och tjänade Gud genom bön och fasta. 38 Just när Symeon talade med Maria och Josef kom Hanna dit och började tacka och hylla Gud. Och hon berättade om Jesus för alla som väntade på att Jerusalem skulle befrias. 39 När föräldrarna sedan hade gjort allt det som Herren Gud kräver i sin lag, återvände de till sin hemstad Nasaret i Galileen. 40 Där växte den lilla pojken upp och blev stark, och han var ovanligt vis för sin ålder. Och Gud tog hand om honom.

Jesus talar med lärarna i templet

41 Jesus föräldrar brukade varje år gå till Jerusalem för att vara med vid påskhögtiden^[5]. 42 Och när Jesus var tolv år gick de dit som vanligt. 43 Men då festen var över och de skulle vända tillbaka hem igen stannade Jesus kvar i Jerusalem utan att föräldrarna visste om det. 44 Föräldrarna gick en hel dag utan att sakna honom, för de trodde att han var tillsammans med sina vänner i ressällskapet. Men framåt kvällen började de fråga efter honom bland släktingar och vänner. 45 Och när de inte kunde hitta honom någonstans, vände de tillbaka till Jerusalem för att leta efter honom där. 46-47 Efter tre dagars letande hittade de honom till sist i templet, där han satt mitt bland de religiösa lärarna och diskuterade svåra frågor. Och alla som hörde honom förvånades över hans intelligens och kloka svar. 48 Hans föräldrar visste inte vad de skulle tro, och Maria sa: ”Men Jesus, hur kunde du göra så mot oss? Din pappa och jag har varit så oroliga och letat överallt efter dig!” 49 ”Varför har ni letat efter mig?” frågade han. ”Visste ni inte att jag måste vara i min Pappas hus, i templet?” 50 Men de förstod inte vad han menade. 51 Sedan följde han med dem hem till Nasaret och lydde dem i allt. Men hans mamma tänkte ofta på det som hade hänt. 52 Och Jesus blev äldre och visare för varje dag och var älskad av både Gud och människor.
