1And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.2And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man' wife.4But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?5Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.6And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.7Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.8Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.10And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?11And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife' sake.12And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.13And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father' house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.14And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.15And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.16And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other : thus she was reproved.17So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children .18For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham' wife.
1Abraham flyttade så småningom söderut till Negev och bosatte sig mellan Kades och Sur. Under en tid var han i staden Gerar,2och där lät han förstå att Sara var hans syster. Då sände kung Abimelek bud efter henne och såg till att hon blev förd till honom i palatset.3Men den natten kom Gud till honom i en dröm och sa: "Du är dödens, för den kvinna du har tagit till dig är gift."4Men Abimelek hade inte legat med henne ännu, så han sa: "Herre, vill du döda en oskyldig man?5Han påstod ju att hon var hans syster. Och hon själv sa: 'Ja, han är min bror.' Jag har inte haft den minsta tanke på att göra något ont eller något felaktigt."6"Ja, jag vet det", svarade Herren. "Det är därför som jag har hindrat dig från att synda emot mig, och därför lät jag dig inte röra henne.7Återlämna henne nu till hennes man. Han ska be för dig så att du får leva, för han är en profet. Men om du inte återlämnar henne till honom, är du och hela din familj dödsdömda."8Nästa morgon steg kungen upp tidigt och sammankallade snabbt ett möte för hela palatspersonalen. Han talade om för dem vad som hade hänt, och de blev allesammans mycket rädda.9-10Sedan kallade kungen på Abraham. "Vad är det du har gjort med oss?" frågade han. "Och vad har jag gjort, för att du ska behandla mig på detta sätt och göra mig och mitt kungarike skyldiga till denna stora synd? Vem kunde tro detta om dig? Vad har fått dig att begå en sådan ond handling?"11-12Abraham svarade: "Jag räknade med att detta var en gudlös plats. Jag tänkte att ni säkert skulle vilja ha min hustru och att ni kunde döda mig för att få henne. Dessutom är hon faktiskt min syster, eller åtminstone halvsyster, för vi har samma far. Men jag är gift med henne.13När Gud skickade ut mig på den långa resan från mitt barndomshem, sa jag till henne: 'Var snäll och säg att du är min syster vart vi än kommer.' "14Då tog kung Abimelek får och oxar och tjänare, både män och kvinnor, och gav till Abraham samtidigt som han återlämnade Sara.15"Se dig omkring i mitt rike och välj själv var du vill bo", sa kungen till honom.16Sedan vände han sig till Sara: "Se här", sa han, "jag ger din 'bror' 1.000 silverstycken som ersättning för den personliga skada jag vållat och som betalning för de krav som ni kan ha mot mig. På så sätt har alla fått rättvisa."17Då bad Abraham till Gud att han skulle bota kungen och drottningen och de andra kvinnorna i familjen så att de skulle kunna få barn.18Gud hade nämligen slagit alla kvinnorna med ofruktsamhet, för att straffa Abimelek för att han tagit Abrahams fru till sig.
