Die Leviten erhalten Städte und Weidegebiete

1-2 Noch während das Volk Israel in Silo im Land Kanaan lagerte, kamen die führenden Männer aus den Sippen der Leviten zum Priester Eleasar, zu Josua, dem Sohn von Nun, und zu den Oberhäuptern der Stämme Israels. Sie sagten: »Der HERR hat durch Mose befohlen, dass wir Städte bekommen sollen, in denen wir wohnen können, und Weideland für unser Vieh.« 3 Die Israeliten gehorchten dem Gebot des HERRN und gaben den Leviten Städte und Weideplätze aus ihren Gebieten. 4 Das Los wurde geworfen und traf zunächst die levitische Sippe Kehat. Zu ihr gehörten die Nachkommen des Priesters Aaron. Sie erhielten als Erste ihren Anteil: dreizehn Städte in den Gebieten der Stämme Juda, Simeon und Benjamin. 5 Den übrigen Nachkommen Kehats fielen zehn Städte in den Gebieten von Ephraim und Dan und im westlichen Gebiet von Manasse zu. 6 Die Sippe Gerschon bekam dreizehn Städte in den Gebieten von Issachar, Asser, Naftali und im Land Baschan, das dem halben Stamm Manasse östlich des Jordan gehörte. 7 Die Sippe Merari erhielt zwölf Städte bei den Stämmen Ruben, Gad und Sebulon. 8 Die Israeliten teilten den Leviten diese Städte mit den umliegenden Weideplätzen zu, wie es das Los bestimmte. So hatte es der HERR durch Mose befohlen.

Die Städte der Sippe Kehat

9-10 Das erste Los traf die Nachkommen von Aaron aus der levitischen Sippe Kehat. Sie erhielten von den Stämmen Juda und Simeon folgende Städte: 11 zunächst Kirjat-Arba, die Stadt des Stammvaters der Anakiter, die im Bergland liegt und jetzt Hebron heißt, mit ihren Weideflächen. 12 Die Äcker und Dörfer rings um Hebron blieben jedoch im Besitz von Kaleb, der Jefunnes Sohn war. 13 Die Nachkommen von Aaron bekamen die unmittelbar an Hebron grenzenden Weiden und die Stadt selbst, die auch als Zufluchtsort für Totschläger diente. Weiter gab man ihnen die Städte Libna, 14 Jattir, Eschtemoa, 15 Holon, Debir, 16 Ajin, Jutta und Bet-Schemesch. Insgesamt erhielten sie neun Städte mit den dazugehörigen Weideplätzen von den Stämmen Juda und Simeon. 17 Dazu kamen vom Stamm Benjamin die vier Städte Gibeon, Geba, 18 Anatot und Almon mit ihren Weiden. 19 Damit besaß das Priestergeschlecht von Aaron dreizehn Städte. 20 Die übrigen Familien der Sippe Kehat vom Stamm Levi erhielten durch das Los einige Städte im Stammesgebiet von Ephraim. 21 Ihnen gehörte nun Sichem im Bergland, ein Zufluchtsort für Totschläger, außerdem Geser, 22 Kibzajim und Bet-Horon: vier Städte mit den dazugehörigen Weideplätzen. 23-24 Der Stamm Dan gab ihnen ebenfalls vier Städte mit Weiden: Elteke, Gibbeton, Ajalon und Gat-Rimmon. 25 Im westlichen Gebiet des Stammes Manasse bekamen sie die beiden Städte Taanach und Gat-Rimmon^[1] mit ihren Weiden. (1Chr 6,55) 26 Insgesamt gehörten den übrigen Familien der Sippe Kehat zehn Städte.

Die Städte der Sippe Gerschon

27 Der Sippe Gerschon vom Stamm Levi wurden im östlichen Gebiet des Stammes Manasse zwei Städte mit Weiden zugeteilt: im Land Baschan die Stadt Golan, einer der Zufluchtsorte für Totschläger, und Beëschtera^[2]. (1Chr 6,56) 28-29 Im Gebiet von Issachar erhielten sie vier Städte mit Weiden: Kirschjon, Daberat, Jarmut und En-Gannim, 30-31 und im Gebiet von Asser diese vier Städte: Mischal, Abdon, Helkat und Rehob. 32 Der Stamm Naftali gab drei Städte mit Weiden: den Zufluchtsort Kedesch in Galiläa sowie Hammot-Dor und Kartan. 33 Insgesamt besaß die Sippe Gerschon dreizehn Städte mit Weideflächen.

Die Städte der Sippe Merari

34-35 Die Sippe Merari, zu der alle übrigen Leviten gehörten, bekam vier Städte mit Weiden im Gebiet von Sebulon: Jokneam, Karta, Dimna und Nahalal. 36-37 Weitere vier Städte mit Weideplätzen teilte man ihnen im Gebiet des Stammes Ruben zu: Bezer, Jahaz, Kedemot und Mefaat. 38-39 Vom Stamm Gad erhielten sie Ramot im Land Gilead, den Zufluchtsort für Totschläger, Mahanajim, Heschbon und Jaser, ebenfalls vier Städte mit Weiden. 40 Insgesamt besaßen die restlichen Sippen des Stammes Levi, die Nachkommen von Merari, zwölf Städte. 41 Alle Leviten erhielten zusammen 48 Städte in den verschiedenen Stammesgebieten Israels. 42 Jede dieser Städte war von Weideland umgeben.

Gott hat Wort gehalten

43 So gab der HERR den Israeliten das ganze Land, wie er es ihren Vorfahren versprochen hatte. Sie nahmen es in Besitz und wohnten darin. 44 Der HERR hielt sein Wort und sorgte dafür, dass sie in Ruhe und Frieden leben konnten. Mit seiner Hilfe hatten die Israeliten alle Feinde besiegt. 45 Kein Versprechen des HERRN blieb unerfüllt – alles war eingetroffen!

Towns for the Levites

1 Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel 2 at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, ‘The Lord commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasture-lands for our livestock.’ 3 So, as the Lord had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasture-lands out of their own inheritance: 4 The first lot came out for the Kohathites, according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin. 5 The rest of Kohath’s descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh. 6 The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. 7 The descendants of Merari, according to their clans, received twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. 8 So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasture-lands, as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 9 They allotted towns by name from the tribes of Judah and Simeon. 10 The following towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them: 11 They gave them Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasture-land, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) 12 But the fields and villages around the city they had given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession. 13 So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Libnah, 14 Jattir, Eshtemoa, 15 Holon, Debir, 16 Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh, together with their pasture-lands – nine towns from these two tribes. 17 And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them: Gibeon, Geba, 18 Anathoth and Almon, together with their pasture-lands – four towns. 19 The total number of towns for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasture-lands. 20 The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim: 21 In the hill country of Ephraim they were given: Shechem (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Gezer, 22 Kibzaim and Beth Horon, together with their pasture-lands – four towns. 23 Also from the tribe of Dan they received: Eltekeh, Gibbethon, 24 Aijalon and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasture-lands – four towns. 25 From half the tribe of Manasseh they received: Taanach and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasture-lands – two towns. 26 All these ten towns and their pasture-lands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans. 27 The Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Be Eshterah, together with their pasture-lands – two towns; 28 from the tribe of Issachar: Kishion, Daberath, 29 Jarmuth and En Gannim, together with their pasture-lands – four towns; 30 from the tribe of Asher: Mishal, Abdon, 31 Helkath and Rehob, together with their pasture-lands – four towns; 32 from the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Hammoth Dor and Kartan, together with their pasture-lands – three towns. 33 The total number of towns of the Gershonite clans came to thirteen, together with their pasture-lands. 34 The Merarite clans (the rest of the Levites) were given: from the tribe of Zebulun: Jokneam, Kartah, 35 Dimnah and Nahalal, together with their pasture-lands – four towns; 36 from the tribe of Reuben: Bezer, Jahaz, 37 Kedemoth and Mephaath, together with their pasture-lands – four towns; 38 from the tribe of Gad: Ramoth in Gilead (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Mahanaim, 39 Heshbon and Jazer, together with their pasture-lands – four towns in all. 40 The total number of towns allotted to the Merarite clans, who were the rest of the Levites, came to twelve. 41 The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasture-lands. 42 Each of these towns had pasture-lands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns. 43 So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. 44 The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. 45 Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
