For the director of music. A psalm of Asaph. A song to the tune of ‘Do Not Destroy.’
1God, we praise you. We praise you because you are near to us. People talk about the wonderful things you have done.2You say, ‘I choose the appointed time to judge people. And I judge them fairly.3When the earth and all its people tremble, I keep everything from falling to pieces.4To the proud I say, “Don’t boast anymore.” To sinners I say, “Don’t show off your power.5Don’t show it off against me. Don’t talk back to me.” ’6No one from east or west or north or south can judge themselves.7God is the one who judges. He says to one person, ‘You are guilty.’ To another he says, ‘You are not guilty.’8In the hand of the LORD is a cup. It is full of wine mixed with spices. It is the wine of his anger. He pours it out. All the evil people on earth drink it down to the very last drop.9I will speak about this for ever. I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.10God says, ‘I will destroy the power of all sinful people. But I will make godly people more powerful.’
1To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song. We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We[1] recount your wondrous deeds. (Ps 50,1; Ps 57,1; Ps 145,18)2“At the set time that I appoint I will judge with equity. (Ps 17,2; Ps 102,13; Dan 8,19; Hab 2,3)3When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars. (1Sam 2,8; Jes 24,19)4I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn; (Ps 75,10; Sach 1,21)5do not lift up your horn on high, or speak with haughty neck.’”6For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, (Ps 3,3)7but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another. (1Sam 2,7; Ps 50,6; Dan 2,21)8For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs. (Hi 21,20; Ps 11,6; Ps 73,10; Spr 23,30)9But I will declare it forever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.10All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up. (1Sam 2,1; Ps 75,4; Ps 89,17; Ps 112,9; Jer 48,25)
