1Wie halte ich es denn selbst in solchen Dingen? Bin ich nicht ein freier Mann? Habe ich nicht unseren Herrn Jesus mit eigenen Augen gesehen? Hat er mich denn nicht zu seinem Apostel berufen? Dass ihr Christen geworden seid, zeigt deutlich, dass ich für den Herrn gearbeitet habe.2Mögen die anderen auch behaupten, ich sei kein Apostel von Christus, ihr könnt das nicht sagen! Denn ihr habt zum Glauben an Jesus Christus gefunden, und das ist die Bestätigung für meinen Dienst.3Denen, die meine Vollmacht in Frage stellen, habe ich dies zu sagen:4Hätten meine Mitarbeiter und ich nicht das Recht, uns auf Kosten der Gemeinde versorgen zu lassen?5Dürften nicht auch wir eine Ehefrau mit auf die Reise nehmen, wie es die anderen Apostel tun, die Brüder des Herrn und auch Petrus[1]?6Müssen etwa nur Barnabas und ich unseren Lebensunterhalt selbst verdienen?7Wo zahlt je ein Soldat seinen eigenen Sold, und wer würde einen Weinberg anlegen, ohne die Trauben auch zu ernten? Oder welcher Hirte würde nicht von der Milch seiner Tiere trinken?8Das ist nicht nur allgemein so üblich, das schreibt auch das Gesetz von Mose vor.9Dort heißt es doch: »Wenn ihr mit einem Ochsen Getreide drescht, dann bindet ihm nicht das Maul zu!« Hat Gott dies etwa angeordnet, weil er sich um die Ochsen sorgt? (5Mo 25,4)10Ohne Frage dachte er dabei an uns! Denn wir sind gemeint, wenn es dort heißt, dass alle, die pflügen und das Getreide dreschen, ihren Anteil an der Ernte erwarten dürfen.11Wir haben unter euch die geistliche Saat ausgesät – die Botschaft von Jesus Christus. Wäre es da wirklich zu viel verlangt, wenn wir dafür auch etwas ernten dürften, indem ihr uns nämlich mit dem versorgt, was wir zum Leben brauchen?12Ihr unterstützt doch auch noch andere Prediger, und das ist richtig so. Aber hätten wir nicht ein größeres Anrecht darauf? Dennoch haben wir von diesem Recht nie Gebrauch gemacht. Wir haben auf alle Ansprüche verzichtet, um der Botschaft von Jesus Christus keine Steine in den Weg zu legen.13Ihr wisst doch genau, dass alle, die im Tempel Dienst tun, etwas von den Einkünften des Tempels bekommen. Und wer am Altar den Opferdienst übernimmt, erhält auch einen Teil von den Opfergaben.14Ebenso hat der Herr angeordnet: Wer die rettende Botschaft verkündet, soll von diesem Dienst auch leben können.15Trotzdem habe ich darauf verzichtet und nichts von alledem verlangt. Ich schreibe das nicht, weil ich in Zukunft etwas von euch haben möchte. Lieber würde ich verhungern, als dass ich mir meinen Grund, mich zu rühmen, von irgendjemand nehmen ließe.16Dass ich die rettende Botschaft verkünde, ist allerdings kein Anlass, mich zu loben; ich muss es tun! Dieser Aufgabe kann ich mich unmöglich entziehen. Sonst würde Gottes Strafe mich treffen.17Hätte ich die Aufgabe freiwillig übernommen, so könnte ich dafür Lohn beanspruchen. Doch Gott hat mich dazu beauftragt, ich habe keine andere Wahl.18Habe ich dann überhaupt einen Lohn zu erwarten? Ja! Er besteht darin, dass ich jedem die Botschaft von Jesus verkünde, und zwar ohne Bezahlung und ohne auf meine Rechte zu pochen.
Kompromissloser Einsatz
19Ich bin also frei und von niemandem abhängig. Aber um möglichst viele für Christus zu gewinnen, habe ich mich zum Sklaven aller Menschen gemacht.20Damit ich die Juden für Christus gewinne, lebe ich wie ein Jude: Wo man alle Vorschriften des jüdischen Gesetzes genau befolgt, lebe ich auch danach, obwohl ich nicht mehr an sie gebunden bin. Denn ich möchte auch die Leute gewinnen, die sich dem Gesetz unterstellt haben.21Bin ich aber bei Menschen, die dieses Gesetz nicht haben, dann passe ich mich ihnen genauso an, um sie für Christus zu gewinnen. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass ich mich gegen Gottes Gebote stelle. Ich befolge das Gesetz, das Christus uns gegeben hat.22Wenn ich mit Menschen zu tun habe, die arm und rechtlos sind,[2] dann begebe ich mich mit ihnen auf eine Stufe, um sie für Christus zu gewinnen. Ich möchte mich allen gleichstellen, um auf jede erdenkliche Weise wenigstens einige Menschen zu retten.23Dies alles tue ich für die rettende Botschaft, damit auch ich Anteil an dem Segen erhalte, den sie verspricht.24Ihr kennt das doch: Von allen Läufern, die im Stadion zum Wettlauf starten, gewinnt nur einer den Siegeskranz. Lauft so, dass ihr ihn gewinnt!25Wer im Wettkampf siegen will, setzt dafür alles ein. Ein Athlet verzichtet auf vieles, um zu gewinnen. Und wie schnell ist sein Siegeskranz verwelkt! Wir dagegen kämpfen um einen unvergänglichen Preis.26Ich weiß genau, wofür ich mich mit aller Kraft einsetze. Ich laufe und habe dabei das Ziel klar vor Augen. Wenn ich kämpfe, geht mein Schlag nicht ins Leere.27Ich gebe alles für diesen Sieg und hole das Letzte aus meinem Körper heraus. Er muss sich meinem Willen fügen. Denn ich will nicht andere zum Kampf des Glaubens auffordern und selbst als untauglich ausscheiden.

Paul’s use of his freedom
19Though I am free and belong to no-one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.20To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law.22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
The need for self-discipline
24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last for ever.26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
