Hoffnung für alle

1 Auch die folgenden Sprüche stammen von König Salomo. Männer am Hof Hiskias, des Königs von Juda, haben sie gesammelt.

Wer sich nicht beherrschen kann …

2 Gott wird geehrt für das, was er verborgen hält; aber der König erlangt nur Ansehen, wenn er alles erforscht. 3 So hoch der Himmel ist und so weit die Erde, so unergründlich sind die Gedanken des Königs. 4 Entferne die Schlacken aus dem Silber, dann gestaltet der Schmied kunstvolle Gefäße daraus; 5 entferne die schlechten Ratgeber vom Hof des Königs, dann ist seine Herrschaft gerecht und sicher. 6 Wenn du vor dem König stehst, dann spiel dich nicht auf und beanspruche keinen Platz unter den höchsten Gästen! 7 Denn es ist besser, du hältst dich bescheiden zurück und wirst dann zu einem Ehrenplatz geführt, als dass du ihn für einen anderen räumen musst, der bedeutender ist als du! Wenn du etwas Verdächtiges gesehen hast, 8 geh nicht übereilt vor Gericht! Denn was machst du, wenn ein anderer Zeuge beweist, dass du im Unrecht bist? 9 Wenn es zu einem Rechtsstreit kommt, dann enttäusche nicht das Vertrauen, das andere in dich gesetzt haben, und plaudere keine Geheimnisse aus! 10 Denn sonst wird jeder wissen, dass du nichts für dich behalten kannst, und du kommst selbst ins Gerede! 11 Wie goldene Äpfel auf einer silbernen Schale, so ist ein rechtes Wort zur rechten Zeit. 12 Auf die Ermahnung eines weisen Menschen zu hören ist so wertvoll wie der schönste Schmuck aus Gold! 13 Ein zuverlässiger Bote ist für den, der ihn sendet, wie eine kühle Erfrischung^[1] in der heißen Erntezeit. 14 Wer sich selbst anpreist mit dem, was er zu bieten hat, und dann seine Versprechungen nicht hält, der gleicht den Wolken, die den ersehnten Regen nicht bringen. 15 Durch Geduld wird ein Herrscher umgestimmt, und Sanftmut kann den stärksten Widerstand brechen. 16 Wenn du Honig findest, dann iss nur so viel, wie dir bekommt; sonst wirst du ihn satt, und du musst ihn wieder ausspucken! 17 Besuche deinen Nachbarn nicht zu oft, sonst wirst du ihm lästig, und er beginnt dich abzulehnen! 18 Wer gegen seinen Mitmenschen falsch aussagt, der richtet so großen Schaden an wie ein Knüppel, ein Schwert oder ein spitzer Pfeil. 19 In der Not auf einen Treulosen zu vertrauen – das ist so, als wollte man mit einem kranken Zahn kauen oder mit einem verkrüppelten Fuß gehen! 20 Für einen Traurigen Lieder zu singen ist so unsinnig, als würde man im Winter den Mantel ausziehen oder Salz in eine Wunde streuen^[2]. 21 Wenn dein Feind hungrig ist, dann gib ihm zu essen; ist er durstig, gib ihm zu trinken. 22 So wirst du ihn beschämen,^[3] und der HERR wird dich belohnen. 23 Nordwind bringt Regen – und heimliches Geschwätz bringt dir böse Blicke ein! 24 Lieber in einer kleinen Ecke unter dem Dach wohnen als in einem prächtigen Haus mit einer nörgelnden Frau! 25 Eine gute Nachricht aus der Ferne ist wie ein Schluck Wasser für eine durstige Kehle! 26 Ein guter Mensch, der sich von einem Gottlosen beeinflussen lässt, ist so unbrauchbar wie eine trübe Quelle oder ein verschmutzter Brunnen. 27 Zu viel Honig ist nicht gut – genauso wie das Streben nach eigener Ehre^[4]! 28 Wer sich nicht beherrschen kann, ist so schutzlos wie eine Stadt ohne Mauer.

1 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. 3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable. 4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer. 5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness. 6 Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men : 7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen. 8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. 9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself ; and discover not a secret to another: 10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away. 11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. 12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. 13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters. 14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain. 15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone. 16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. 17 Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee. 18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. 19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. 20 As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart. 21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: 22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. 23 The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue. 24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house. 25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. 26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring. 27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory. 28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

1 Voici encore des proverbes de Salomon. Ils ont été recueillis par les fonctionnaires d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda^[1]. 2 La gloire de Dieu, c’est de tenir certaines choses cachées, la gloire du roi, c’est de s’enquérir soigneusement des choses. 3 Vous ne pénétrerez pas le cœur d’un roi, pas plus que vous ne pourrez mesurer la hauteur du ciel ou sonder les profondeurs de la terre. 4 Elimine de l’argent les scories, l’orfèvre pourra le travailler pour en faire un vase. 5 Elimine de l’entourage du roi les méchants, son autorité s’affermira par la justice. 6 Ne fais pas l’important devant le roi, et ne te mets pas à la place des grands^[2]. (Lk 14,8) 7 Il vaut mieux qu’on te dise: « Viens te mettre à cette place d’honneur » que de te voir humilié devant les nobles. 8 Ne te hâte pas de t’engager dans un procès, tu t’exposerais à ne plus savoir quoi faire par la suite si quelqu’un d’autre te confondait. 9 Plaide ta cause contre ton prochain, mais ne va pas révéler les confidences d’un autre, 10 sinon, il pourrait l’apprendre et t’injurier, sans que tu puisses rattraper tes propos. 11 Des paroles prononcées bien à propos sont comme des pommes d’or avec des ciselures d’argent. 12 Un avertissement donné par une personne sage et reçu d’une oreille attentive est comme un anneau d’or et une parure d’or fin. 13 Comme la fraîcheur de la neige au fort de la moisson^[3], tel est un messager fidèle pour celui qui l’envoie: il réconforte son maître. 14 Qui se vante de sa libéralité sans rien donner fait penser au nuage amené par le vent et qui n’apporte pas la pluie. 15 Avec de la patience, on persuade un dirigeant, tout comme une langue douce peut briser un os. 16 Si tu trouves du miel, n’en mange que ce qui te suffit, car si tu en prends trop, tu le rejetteras. 17 Ne va pas trop souvent chez ton ami, de peur qu’il se lasse de toi et te prenne en haine. 18 L’homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain est comme une massue, une épée et une flèche acérée. 19 Se fier à un homme déloyal au jour du malheur, c’est comme se fier à une dent branlante ou à un pied chancelant. 20 Entonner des chansons pour une personne affligée, c’est comme lui enlever son habit par un jour de froid ou verser du vinaigre sur du salpêtre^[4]. 21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger, s’il a soif, donne-lui à boire^[5]. (Röm 12,20) 22 Ce sera comme si tu lui mettais des charbons ardents sur sa tête^[6], et l’Eternel te le rendra. (Ps 140,11) 23 Une langue dissimulatrice engendre des visages irrités^[7] aussi sûrement que le vent du nord enfante la pluie. 24 Mieux vaut habiter dans un coin sur un toit en terrasse que de partager la maison d’une femme querelleuse. 25 Une bonne nouvelle venant d’un pays lointain fait du bien, comme de l’eau fraîche à une personne altérée. 26 Un juste qui se laisse ébranler devant le méchant est comme une source aux eaux troubles ou une fontaine polluée. 27 Il n’est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel, mais étudier des choses importantes voilà ce qui est important^[8]. 28 Qui ne sait pas se dominer est comme une ville démantelée qui n’a plus de remparts.
