Die Ephraimiter greifen Jeftah an

1 Die Männer des Stammes Ephraim versammelten sich und gingen gemeinsam nach Zafon, wo Jeftah sich aufhielt. Sie fuhren ihn an: »Warum bist du ohne uns gegen die Ammoniter in den Krieg gezogen? Warum hast du uns nicht um Hilfe gebeten? Aus Rache werden wir dir jetzt das Dach über dem Kopf anzünden!« 2 Jeftah erwiderte: »Mein Volk und ich gerieten in einen schweren Streit mit den Ammonitern. Ich rief euch, aber ihr habt mir nicht geholfen. 3 Als mir klar wurde, dass ich nicht auf euch zählen konnte, bin ich auf eigene Faust gegen die Ammoniter in den Kampf gezogen und habe sie mit der Hilfe des HERRN besiegt. Warum kommt ihr jetzt und wollt mich angreifen?« 4 Jeftah rief alle Männer von Gilead zusammen. Denn die Ephraimiter hatten sie beschimpft: »Ihr aus Gilead seid doch nur entlaufenes Gesindel aus den Stämmen Ephraim und Manasse!« Die Gileaditer kämpften gegen die Männer Ephraims und besiegten sie. 5 Dann besetzten sie die Jordanübergänge und schnitten ihren Gegnern den Fluchtweg ab. Immer wenn ein Ephraimiter hinüberwollte, fragten sie ihn: »Bist du aus Ephraim?« Verneinte er, 6 so forderten sie ihn auf: »Sag einmal ›Schibbolet‹^[1]!« Wenn er das Wort nicht richtig aussprechen konnte und stattdessen »Sibbolet« sagte, dann packten sie ihn und brachten ihn an Ort und Stelle um. Damals wurden 42.000 Ephraimiter getötet. 7 Jeftah führte Israel sechs Jahre. Als er starb, wurde er in einer Stadt im Gebiet von Gilead begraben.

Die Richter Ibzan, Elon und Abdon

8 Nach Jeftah wurde Ibzan aus Bethlehem Richter von Israel. 9 Er hatte dreißig Söhne und ebenso viele Töchter. Seine Töchter waren alle verheiratet und wohnten nicht mehr zu Hause. Dafür hatte er dreißig Frauen für seine Söhne gefunden, die nun in seiner Familie lebten. Sieben Jahre lang führte er Israel, 10 dann starb er und wurde in Bethlehem begraben. 11 Nach ihm übernahm Elon aus dem Stamm Sebulon die Führung. Er war zehn Jahre lang Richter von Israel. 12 Als er starb, begrub man ihn in Ajalon im Gebiet Sebulons. 13 Sein Nachfolger wurde Abdon, der Sohn von Hillel aus Piraton. 14 Er hatte vierzig Söhne und dreißig Enkel, die siebzig Esel besaßen. Abdon führte Israel acht Jahre. 15 Dann starb auch er, und man begrub ihn in Piraton im Amalekitergebirge, das zum Gebiet Ephraims gehört.

Jephthah’s Conflict with Ephraim

1 The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.” (Ri 8,1) 2 And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people had a great dispute with the Ammonites, and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand. 3 And when I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?” (1Sam 19,5; 1Sam 28,21; Hi 13,14; Ps 119,109)

4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.” (1Sam 25,10) 5 And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” (Ri 3,28) 6 they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 of the Ephraimites fell. (Ri 12,5) 7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.^[1]

8 After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. 9 He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem. 11 After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years. 12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun. 13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

1 Entre tanto los varones de Efraín fueron convocados, y cruzando hacia Safón, dijeron a Jefté: ¿Por qué fuiste a luchar contra los hijos de Amón y no nos llamaste para ir contigo? ¡Prenderemos fuego a tu casa contigo dentro! 2 Jefté les respondió: Yo y mi pueblo hemos tenido una gran contienda contra los hijos de Amón, y os convoqué, pero no me librasteis de su mano. 3 Viendo pues que no me librabais, arriesgué mi vida y pasé contra los hijos de Amón, y YHVH los entregó en mi mano. ¿Por qué, pues, subís hoy a hacer guerra contra mí? 4 Entonces Jefté juntó a todos los varones de Galaad e hizo guerra contra Efraín. Y los hombres de Galaad derrotaron a Efraín, porque éstos habían dicho: ¡Fugitivos de Efraín sois vosotros galaaditas, en medio de Efraín y en medio de Manasés! 5 Y Galaad le arrebató a Efraín los vados del Jordán; y sucedía que cuando los fugitivos de Efraín decían: Voy a pasar, los hombres de Galaad le preguntaban: ¿Eres tú efrateo? 1 Gli uomini di Efraim si radunarono, passarono a Safon e dissero a Iefte: «Perché sei andato a combattere contro i figli di Ammon e non ci hai chiamati ad andare con te? Noi bruceremo la tua casa e te con essa». 2 Iefte rispose loro: «Io e il mio popolo abbiamo avuto grande ostilità con i figli di Ammon; e quando vi ho chiamati in aiuto, non mi avete liberato dalle loro mani. 3 Vedendo che voi non venivate in mio soccorso, ho posto a repentaglio la mia vita, ho marciato contro i figli di Ammon e il Signore li ha messi nelle mie mani. Perché dunque oggi siete saliti contro di me per muovermi guerra?» 4 Poi Iefte, radunati tutti gli uomini di Galaad, diede battaglia a Efraim; e gli uomini di Galaad sconfissero gli Efraimiti, perché questi li insultavano dicendo: «Voi, Galaaditi, siete dei fuggiaschi di Efraim, in mezzo a Efraim e in mezzo a Manasse!» 5 I Galaaditi intercettarono i guadi del Giordano agli Efraimiti; e quando uno dei fuggiaschi di Efraim diceva: «Lasciatemi passare», gli uomini di Galaad gli chiedevano: «Sei un Efraimita?» Se quello rispondeva: «No», i Galaaditi gli dicevano: 6 «Ebbene, di’ Scibbolet»; e quello diceva: «Sibbolet», senza fare attenzione a pronunciare bene; allora lo afferravano e lo scannavano presso i guadi del Giordano. Perirono in quel tempo quarantaduemila Efraimiti. 7 Iefte fu giudice d’Israele per sei anni. Poi Iefte, il Galaadita, morì e fu sepolto in una delle città di Galaad.

Ibsan, Elon e Abdon, giudici d’Israele

8 Dopo di lui fu giudice d’Israele Ibsan di Betlemme, 9 che ebbe trenta figli, fece sposare le sue trenta figlie con gente di fuori, e fece venire da fuori trenta fanciulle per i suoi figli. Fu giudice d’Israele per sette anni. 10 Poi Ibsan morì e fu sepolto a Betlemme. 11 Dopo di lui fu giudice d’Israele Elon, lo Zabulonita; fu giudice d’Israele per dieci anni. 12 Poi Elon, lo Zabulonita, morì e fu sepolto ad Aialon, nel paese di Zabulon. 13 Dopo di lui fu giudice d’Israele Abdon, figlio di Illel, il Piratonita. 14 Ebbe quaranta figli e trenta nipoti, i quali cavalcavano settanta asinelli. Fu giudice d’Israele per otto anni. 15 Poi Abdon, figlio di Illel, il Piratonita, morì e fu sepolto a Piraton, nel paese di Efraim, sul monte Amalec.
