1Jezus ging vol van de Heilige Geest uit de Jordaanvallei weg. De Geest leidde Hem naar de woestijn van Judea2waar Hij veertig dagen bleef. Daar stelde de duivel Hem voortdurend op de proef. Al die tijd at Jezus niets en op het laatst kreeg Hij honger.3De duivel zei: ‘Als U de Zoon van God bent, zeg dan tegen deze steen dat hij een brood moet worden.’4Maar Jezus antwoordde: ‘In de Boeken staat dat eten niet het belangrijkste is.’5De duivel nam Jezus mee naar een hoogvlakte en liet Hem in een oogopslag alle koninkrijken van de wereld zien.6‘Kijk,’ zei hij, ‘dat zal ik U allemaal geven, met al hun roem en eer erbij. Want het is allemaal van mij.7Ik geef het aan wie ik wil. Als U mij aanbidt, krijgt U het allemaal.’8Jezus antwoordde: ‘Er staat in de Boeken: “Aanbid de Here, uw God, en geef niemand anders eer.” ’9Daarna nam de duivel Hem mee naar het dak van de tempel in Jeruzalem. ‘Als U de Zoon van God bent,’ zei hij, ‘spring dan naar beneden.10Er staat immers in de Boeken: “God zal zijn engelen sturen om U te beschermen.11Zij zullen U op handen dragen en U zult niet struikelen.” ’12Jezus antwoordde: ‘Er staat ook: “Stel de Here, uw God, niet op de proef.” ’13Zo probeerde de duivel op alle mogelijke manieren Jezus om te praten. Maar zonder succes. Daarom liet hij Hem voorlopig met rust.
De opdracht van Jezus
14Jezus ging terug naar Galilea, vol van de kracht van de Heilige Geest.15Het duurde niet lang of Hij was daar overal bekend. Hij sprak in de verschillende synagogen en stond bij iedereen in hoog aanzien.16Hij kwam ook in Nazareth, het dorp waar Hij zijn jeugd had doorgebracht. Op de sabbat (zaterdag, de Joodse rustdag) ging Hij naar de synagoge, dat was zo zijn gewoonte. Tijdens de dienst stond Hij op om voor te lezen.17Men gaf Hem het boek van de profeet Je-sa-ja en Hij zocht het gedeelte op waar staat:18‘De Geest van de Here rust op Mij, omdat Hij Mij heeft gezalfd tot brenger van goed nieuws aan arme mensen. Hij heeft Mij gestuurd om uit te roepen dat gevangenen zullen worden vrijgelaten, dat blinden zullen zien, dat onderdrukten zullen worden bevrijd en19dat de tijd van Gods genade is aangebroken.’20Hij deed het boek dicht, gaf het aan de dienaar en ging zitten. Alle ogen waren op Hem gericht.21Hij begon: ‘Wat Ik u zojuist heb voorgelezen, is werkelijkheid geworden.’22Iedereen in de synagoge vond dat er iets heel bijzonders van Hem uitging. Wat Hij zei, was ge-woon geweldig. Zij waren hoogst verbaasd. ‘Is dat niet de zoon van Jozef?’ vroegen zij.23Jezus zei: ‘U wilt eigenlijk zeggen: “Dokter, genees uzelf.” U bedoelt daarmee: “Wij hebben gehoord wat U in Kafarnaüm hebt gedaan.24Waarom doet U dat hier niet, in uw vaderstad?” Luister goed: een profeet wordt in zijn eigen stad niet geaccepteerd.25Neem nu de profeet Elia. In zijn tijd was er hongersnood. Vele Joodse weduwen hadden niets te eten, want er was drieënhalf jaar geen druppel regen gevallen.26En toch werd Elia niet naar een van hen gestuurd, maar wel naar een vreemdelinge, een weduwe uit Sarepta, bij Sidon.27Of denk eens aan de profeet Elisa. Hij genas de melaatse Naäman, een Syriër. Maar van de vele Joodse melaatsen, die ook hulp nodig hadden, werd er niet één genezen.’28Dat was de mensen te veel. Woedend sprongen zij op en joegen Jezus het dorp uit.29Zij brachten Hem naar de rand van een afgrond even buiten het dorp.30Daar wilden zij Hem vanaf duwen. Maar Hij keerde Zich om, liep ongehinderd tussen hen door en ging zijn eigen weg.31Hij kwam in Kafarnaüm, een stadje aan het Meer van Galilea. Daar ging Hij elke sabbat naar de synagoge en sprak er de mensen toe.32Zij waren verbaasd over wat Hij hun leerde, want Hij sprak als iemand met gezag, die wist waarover Hij het had.33Op een dag was Jezus weer in de synagoge. Een man die in de macht van een boze geest was, schreeuwde:34‘Jezus van Nazareth, ga weg! Ik wil niets met U te maken hebben. U bent gekomen om ons te vernietigen! Ik weet wel wie U bent: de heilige Zoon van God!’35Jezus snoerde hem de mond. ‘Zwijg,’ zei Hij tegen de boze geest. ‘Kom eruit.’ De boze geest gooide de man midden in de synagoge op de grond en ging uit hem weg, zonder hem verder kwaad te doen.36Vol verbazing zeiden de mensen tegen elkaar: ‘Nee, maar! De boze geesten doen wat Hij zegt!’37Het nieuws over zijn optreden ging als een lopend vuurtje door de streek.38Uit de synagoge ging Hij naar het huis van Simon. Simons schoonmoeder lag met hoge koorts in bed. Haar huisgenoten vroegen Jezus of Hij haar wilde genezen.39Hij kwam bij haar bed staan en zei dat de koorts moest verdwijnen. Haar temperatuur werd onmiddellijk normaal. Zij stond op en maakte eten voor Jezus en de anderen klaar.40Bij het ondergaan van de zon werden vele zieke mensen bij Hem gebracht. Hij legde zijn handen op hen en genas hen allemaal.41Het deed er niet toe wat voor ziekte het was. Ook joeg Hij uit vele mensen boze geesten weg. Die schreeuwden dan: ‘U bent de Zoon van God!’ Maar Hij legde ze onmiddellijk het zwijgen op, want de boze geesten wisten dat Hij de Christus was.42De volgende morgen vroeg ging Jezus naar een stille plek. De mensen zochten Hem overal. Toen zij Hem eindelijk hadden gevonden, smeekten zij Hem niet weg te gaan. Zij wilden zo graag dat Hij bij hen bleef.43Maar Hij antwoordde: ‘Ik moet het goede nieuws van het Koninkrijk van God ook op andere plaatsen brengen. Dat is mijn opdracht.’44Daarna reisde Hij rond door Judea en sprak in de synagogen.

(Op 13:2)7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”8And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” (Deut 6:13; 1 Sam 7:3; Luk 4:4; Luk 4:12)9And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, (Mat 4:5; Luk 4:3)10for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ (Ps 91:11)11and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” (Luk 4:10)12And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Deut 6:16; Jes 7:12)13And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. Jesus Begins His Ministry
14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. (Mat 4:12; Luk 4:1; Luk 4:37; Hand 1:8)15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. (Mat 4:23)
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. (Mat 13:54; Mar 6:1; Mar 6:2; Luk 2:39; Luk 2:51; Luk 4:31; Hand 13:15; Hand 13:27; Hand 15:21; Hand 17:2)17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, (Luk 3:4; Hand 8:28)18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, (Ps 146:7; Jes 42:7; Jes 58:6; Jes 61:1; Mat 11:5; Luk 4:1; Luk 6:20; Joh 9:39; Hand 1:2; Hand 26:18)19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Lev 25:10; Jes 49:8; 2 Cor 6:2)20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. (Mat 5:1; Mat 13:2; Mat 26:55; Luk 19:48; Joh 8:2; Hand 3:4)21And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Mat 1:22; Mar 12:10; Hand 8:35)22And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” (Ps 45:2; Mat 13:55; Luk 3:23; Joh 6:42)23And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” (Mat 11:23; Mat 27:42; Mar 2:1; Luk 23:39; Joh 4:46)24And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. (Mat 13:57)25But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, (1 Kon 17:1; 1 Kon 18:1; Jak 5:17; Op 11:6)26and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. (1 Kon 17:9)27And there were many lepers[1] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” (2 Kon 5:1; 2 Kon 7:3)28When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.29And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. (Num 15:35; Hand 7:58)30But passing through their midst, he went away. (Joh 8:59; Joh 10:39)
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon
31And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, (Mat 4:13; Mat 4:23; Mar 1:21; Mar 6:2; Luk 4:15)32and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. (Mat 7:28; Luk 4:36)33And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, (Luk 4:31)34“Ha![2] What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” (Mat 8:29; Luk 1:35; Joh 6:69; Hand 3:14; Hand 19:15; Heb 7:26; Jak 2:19; 1 Joh 2:20; Op 3:7)35But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. (Mat 12:16; Luk 4:41)36And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” (Mat 8:27; Luk 4:32)37And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region. (Luk 4:14)
Jesus Heals Many
38And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. (Mat 8:14; Mar 1:29; 1 Cor 9:5)39And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. (Mat 8:26; Mat 17:18; Mar 4:39; Mar 9:25; Luk 8:24; Luk 9:42)40Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. (Mar 5:23)41And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. (Mat 1:17; Mat 14:33; Mar 3:11; Luk 4:33; Hand 16:17)
Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, (Mar 1:35; Mar 1:36; Luk 5:16)43but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” (Mat 4:23; Mat 24:14; Luk 8:1; Luk 13:33; Luk 16:16; Hand 8:12)44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.[3] (Mar 1:39)
