1Wee de stad Samaria, omringd door haar vruchtbare vallei. Samaria, de trots en vreugde van de dronkaards van Israël! Wee haar schoonheid, de gekroonde glorie van dronkaards, het is een bloem die verwelkt!2De Here is sterk en machtig, Hij is als een hagelstorm, een vernietigende orkaan, als een alleswegspoelende vloedgolf, Hij zet de hele aarde naar zijn hand.3Eens zal de oogstrelende schoonheid van Samaria, omringd door een vruchtbare vallei, plotseling verdwenen zijn.4Zij zal gretig worden weggeplukt, zoals een vroege vijg wordt weggeplukt en gretig opgegeten!5Uiteindelijk zal dan de HERE van de hemelse legers Zelf hun gekroonde glorie zijn, de prachtige diadeem voor wie er van zijn volk zijn overgebleven.6Hij zal de rechters een verlangen naar rechtvaardigheid geven en grote moed aan de soldaten die bij de poort weten stand te houden.7Maar ook Jeruzalem wordt door dronkaards geleid! Haar priesters en profeten wankelen en waggelen. Zij maken domme fouten en begaan grote vergissingen.8Hun tafels liggen vol met braaksel, overal ligt vuil.9‘Wie denkt Jesaja wel dat hij is,’ zeggen de mensen, ‘om op zoʼn toon tegen ons te spreken! Zijn wij soms kleine kinderen, net oud genoeg om te praten?10Hij vertelt ons steeds weer hetzelfde, gebod op gebod, regel op regel, dan weer dit en dan weer dat!’11Werkelijk, om tot dit volk te spreken zal God buitenlanders sturen, mensen die in onverstaanbare talen spreken!12Zij zouden rustig kunnen leven in hun eigen land, maar zij wilden niet naar Hem luisteren.13De HERE zal het daarom steeds opnieuw voor hen uitspellen. Het keer op keer in simpele bewoordingen vertellen, elke keer als Hij de kans heeft. Maar toch zullen zij over deze simpele en oprechte boodschap struikelen en vallen. Zij zullen worden gebroken en vertrapt en gevangengenomen.14Luister daarom goed naar de woorden van de HERE, spottende heersers in Jeruzalem.15U zegt: ‘Wij hebben een afspraak gemaakt met de dood en een verdrag met het dodenrijk, om gedekt te zijn tegen de stormvloed die over ons komt. Wij hebben de leugen als een schuilplaats en verstoppen ons achter bedrog.’16Maar de HERE God zegt: ‘Kijk, Ik plaats een steen als fundament in Sion, een kostbare hoeksteen die Ik heb uitgekozen, en wie zijn vertrouwen daarin stelt, hoeft nooit meer een andere toevlucht te zoeken.17Ik zal met het meetsnoer en het paslood van de rechtvaardigheid het fundament dat u maakte, controleren. Het ziet er wel goed uit, maar de hagelstorm van Assur zal die onbetrouwbare schuilplaats vernietigen, als een watervloed zal hij het wegvagen.18Ik zal uw verbond met de dood en het dodenrijk tenietdoen, zodat u in de grond wordt gestampt als de vijand uw land binnenstormt.19Steeds weer zal die stormvloed komen opzetten en u meevoeren, totdat uiteindelijk de vreselijke waarheid van mijn waarschuwingen tot u zal doordringen.’20Het bed dat u hebt gemaakt, is veel te kort om op te liggen, de dekens zijn te smal om u te bedekken.21De HERE zal plotseling in toorn verschijnen, net als op de berg Perasim en in het dal bij Gibeon, om iets vreemds en ongewoons te doen.22Spot daarom niet meer, anders wordt uw straf alleen maar zwaarder. Want God, de HERE van de hemelse legers, heeft mij duidelijk gezegd dat Hij vastbesloten is het land te vernietigen.23-24Luister naar mij, luister eens heel goed: ploegt een boer voortdurend zijn land zonder te zaaien? Blijft hij de aarde eggen, zonder gewas in te planten?25Plant hij uiteindelijk niet verschillende soorten kruiden en koren, elk op een apart stuk grond?26Hij weet precies wat hij moet doen, want God heeft het hem laten zien en begrijpen.27Hij dorst niet alles op dezelfde manier. Voor dille wordt geen dorsslede gebruikt, maar een stok. Komijn wordt niet gedorst met een wagenrad, maar met een roede, heel voorzichtig.28Koren voor brood wordt niet helemaal geplet, maar alleen kort gedorst.29Zo zal ook HERE van de hemelse legers in zijn wijsheid niet eindeloos, zonder maat, straffen.

(1 Kon 3:28; Jes 38:6)7These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed by[3] wine, they stagger with strong drink, they reel in vision, they stumble in giving judgment. (Jes 3:12; Jes 9:15; Jes 56:10; Jes 56:12; Hos 4:11)8For all tables are full of filthy vomit, with no space left.9“To whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, those taken from the breast? (Jer 6:10)10For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”11For by people of strange lips and with a foreign tongue the Lord will speak to this people, (Jes 5:26; 1 Cor 14:21)12to whom he has said, “This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose”; yet they would not hear. A Cornerstone in Zion
14Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers, who rule this people in Jerusalem! (Jes 28:22; Jes 29:20)15Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”; (Jes 8:7; Jes 28:2; Jes 28:18; Rom 1:25)16therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid[4] as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ (Ps 118:22; Jes 14:32; Mat 21:42; Hand 4:11; Rom 9:33; 1 Petr 2:6)17And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.” (2 Kon 21:13)18Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be beaten down by it. (Jes 28:15)19As often as it passes through it will take you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be sheer terror to understand the message. (2 Kron 32:18; Jes 50:4)20For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on, and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in.21For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim; as in the Valley of Gibeon he will be roused; to do his deed—strange is his deed! and to work his work—alien is his work! (Jes 10:23; Jes 28:14)23Give ear, and hear my voice; give attention, and hear my speech.24Does he who plows for sowing plow continually? Does he continually open and harrow his ground?25When he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter dill, sow cumin, and put in wheat in rows and barley in its proper place, and emmer[5] as the border? (Jes 55:10)26For he is rightly instructed; his God teaches him. (Jes 21:10)27Dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart wheel rolled over cumin, but dill is beaten out with a stick, and cumin with a rod.28Does one crush grain for bread? No, he does not thresh it forever;[6] when he drives his cart wheel over it with his horses, he does not crush it.29This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
