1‘Wee de onrechtvaardige rechters en zij die slechte wetten uitvaardigen,’ zegt de HERE,2‘zodat er geen gerechtigheid is voor de armen, weduwen en wezen. Zelfs zij worden door hen beroofd.3En wat zult u doen als Ik vanuit een ver land de verwoesting op u afstuur? Tot wie zult u zich wenden om hulp? Waar zullen uw schatten veilig zijn?4Ik zal u niet helpen, u zult voortstrompelen als gevangenen en tussen de verslagenen op de grond liggen. En zelfs dan is mijn toorn nog niet bekoeld en blijft mijn hand dreigend opgeheven.5Assur is de zweep van mijn toorn, zijn militaire kracht is mijn wapen tegen dit goddeloze en vervloekte volk.6Hij zal hen tot slaven maken, hen uitplunderen en als vuil onder zijn voeten vertrappen.7Maar de koning van Assur zal niet weten dat Ik hem stuurde. Hij zal eenvoudig denken dat hij mijn volk aanvalt als onderdeel van zijn plan om de wereld te veroveren.8Hij zal aankondigen dat al zijn aanvoerders spoedig koningen over de veroverde gebieden zullen zijn.9“Wij zullen Kalno vernietigen, net als Karkemis,” zal hij zeggen, “en Hamat zal net als Arpad tegen ons ten onder gaan. Samaria zullen wij vernietigen, net zoals wij het Damascus deden.10Wij hebben menig koninkrijk ten val gebracht dat machtiger afgoden kende dan die van Samaria en Jeruzalem.11Als wij Samaria en zijn afgoden hebben vernietigd, zullen wij ook Jeruzalem met zijn afgoden te gronde richten.” ’12Nadat de Here de koning van Assur heeft gebruikt om zijn doel te bereiken, zal Hij Zich tegen het volk van Assur keren en de Assyriërs op hun beurt straffen, want zij zijn trotse en hooghartige mensen.13Zij beweren: ‘Wij hebben door eigen kracht en wijsheid deze oorlogen gewonnen. Met onze eigen kracht braken wij de muren kapot, vernietigden het volk en droegen hun schatten weg.14In onze grootheid beroofden wij het volk van zijn schatten als iemand die een vogelnest leegrooft en wij verzamelden koninkrijken als een boer die eieren raapt. Niemand kan een vinger naar ons uitsteken of zijn mond openen om tegen ons te piepen!’15Maar de HERE zegt: ‘Zal de bijl er prat op gaan dat hij meer kracht heeft dan de man die hem hanteert? Is de zaag machtiger dan de man die zaagt? Kan een stok slaan zonder een hand die hem vasthoudt? Kan een wandelstok uit zichzelf lopen?’16Om uw grootspraak, koning van Assur, zal de HERE God van de hemelse legers uw trotse legereenheden vernietigen als door een verterend vuur.17God, het Licht en de Heilige van Israël, zal het vuur en de vlam zijn die hen zal vernietigen. In een enkele nacht zal Hij de Assyriërs die het land Israël hebben verwoest, verbranden als dorens en distels.18Het machtige leger van Assur lijkt op een groot woud, maar toch zal het worden vernietigd. De HERE zal hen vernietigen, hun ziel en hun lichaam, zoals een zieke die langzaam wegkwijnt.19Slechts enkele leden van dat machtige leger zullen overblijven, zo weinig dat een kind hen zou kunnen tellen!20Uiteindelijk zullen de overlevenden in Israël en Juda dan hun vertrouwen weer stellen in de HERE, de Heilige van Israël, in plaats van angstig te zijn voor degenen die hen sloegen.21Een restant van hen zal terugkeren naar de machtige God.22Want al waren de Israëlieten zo talrijk als het zand aan het strand van de zee, slechts een klein deel van hen zal op dat moment zijn overgebleven om terug te keren. Uw ondergang staat vast en daaruit vloeit gerechtigheid voort.23Ja, de HERE God van de hemelse legers heeft nu al vast besloten hen te verteren, zodat alle volken het kunnen zien.24Daarom zegt de HERE God van de hemelse legers: ‘O mijn volk in Jeruzalem, wees niet bang voor de Assyriërs als zij u onderdrukken, zoals de Egyptenaren lang geleden deden.25Het zal niet lang duren, binnen korte tijd zal mijn toorn tegen u bekoelen en dan zal mijn toorn zich tegen hen keren om hen te vernietigen.’26De HERE van de hemelse legers zal zijn engel sturen om hen in een machtige slag te verslaan, zoals in de tijd dat Gideon de Midjanieten bij de rots Oreb versloeg of zoals toen God de Egyptische legers in de zee liet verdrinken.27Op die dag zal God de last van de schouders van zijn volk afnemen. Hij zal het bevrijden van het slavenjuk en dat juk vernietigen.28-29Kijk, de machtige legers van Assur zijn in aantocht! Nu zijn zij bij Ajjat en nu bij Migron. Zij slaan voorraden op bij Michmas en trekken de pas over, zij overnachten in Geba. De angst houdt Rama in zijn greep, alle inwoners van Gibea—de stad van Saul—rennen voor hun leven.30Schreeuw van angst, inwoners van Bat-Gallim! Geef de waarschuwing door aan Laïs, want het machtige leger is in aantocht. Arm Anatot, wat een wreed lot staat u te wachten!31Daar vluchten de inwoners van Madmena, de inwoners van Gebim maken zich klaar om ervandoor te gaan.32Maar de vijand houdt halt bij Nob en blijft daar de rest van de dag. Hij schudt zijn vuist tegen Jeruzalem op de berg Sion.33Maar dan, kijk, kijk! De HERE, de HERE van alle hemelse legers, hakt die machtige boom om! Hij vernietigt heel dat enorme leger, groot en klein, officieren en manschappen.34Hij, de Machtige, zal de vijand omhakken zoals de bijl van een houthakker de bomen in de bossen van de Libanon omhakt.

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria
5Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury! The Remnant of Israel Will Return
20In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
