Jeremia in de put

1-2 Sefatja, de zoon van Mattan, Gedalja, de zoon van Paschur, Juchal, de zoon van Selemja, en Paschur, de zoon van Malkia, hoorden dat Jeremia de mensen had verteld dat iedereen die in Jeruzalem bleef, zou sterven door het zwaard, de honger of door ziekten, maar dat zij die zich aan de Babyloniërs zouden overgeven, in leven zouden blijven 3 en dat de stad Jeruzalem zeker door de koning van Babel zou worden ingenomen. 4 Daarom gingen zij naar de koning en zeiden: ‘Majesteit, deze man moet sterven. Dergelijke taal ondermijnt het moreel van de weinige soldaten die we nog hebben en van alle inwoners. Hij is niet op vrede uit, maar op de ondergang van ons volk.’ 5 Koning Sedekia ging daarmee akkoord. ‘Goed,’ zei hij, ‘doe met hem wat u wilt, ik kan u niet tegenhouden.’ 6 Zij haalden Jeremia uit zijn cel en lieten hem aan touwen in een put op de binnenplaats van de gevangenis zakken. De put was van Malkia, een zoon van de koning. Er stond geen water in, maar de bodem was bedekt met een dikke laag modder, waarin Jeremia wegzakte. 7 Toen de Ethiopiër Ebed-Melech, een belangrijke hoffunctionaris, hoorde dat Jeremia in de put zat, 8 haastte hij zich naar de Benjaminpoort waar de koning op dat moment was. 9 ‘Majesteit,’ zei hij, ‘het is misdadig dat deze mannen Jeremia in de put hebben laten zakken om hem daar te laten sterven van de honger. Er is in de stad toch al geen brood meer te krijgen.’ 10 Toen beval de koning Ebed-Melech met hulp van dertig mannen Jeremia uit de put te trekken, voordat hij zou sterven. 11 Ebed-Melech ging samen met de mannen naar een opslagplaats in het paleis waar afgedankte kleding lag. Hij pakte daar wat vodden en oude kleren, nam die mee naar de put en liet ze aan een touw naar Jeremia zakken. 12 Hij riep naar beneden: ‘Doe die stukken stof onder uw oksels, anders zullen de touwen u verwonden.’ Toen Jeremia dat had gedaan, 13 trokken zij hem uit de put en brachten hem terug naar de paleisgevangenis. 14 Op een dag liet koning Sedekia Jeremia halen om hem bij de zij-ingang van de tempel te ontmoeten. ‘Ik wil u iets vragen,’ zei de koning, ‘en probeer niet de waarheid voor mij te verbergen.’ 15 Jeremia antwoordde: ‘Als ik u de waarheid vertel, zult u mij doden. En u zult toch niet naar me luisteren.’ 16 Daarom zwoer koning Sedekia bij de Almachtige God, zijn schepper, dat hij Jeremia niet zou doden of in handen geven van de mannen die het op zijn leven hadden voorzien. 17 Toen zei Jeremia tegen Sedekia: ‘De HERE, de God van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, zegt: “Als u zich aan de koning van Babel overgeeft, zullen u en uw familie in leven blijven en zal de stad niet worden verbrand. 18 Maar als u weigert u over te geven, zal deze stad door het Babylonische leger in lichterlaaie worden gezet en u zult niet ontsnappen.” ’ 19 ‘Maar ik ben bang om mij over te geven,’ zei de koning, ‘want de Babyloniërs zullen mij overdragen aan de Joden die zijn overgelopen en wie weet wat die met mij zullen doen?’ 20 Jeremia antwoordde: ‘U zult niet in hun handen vallen, als u alleen maar de HERE gehoorzaamt, uw leven zal worden gespaard en het zal allemaal goed aflopen voor u. 21-22 “Maar als u weigert u over te geven,” zegt de HERE, “zullen alle vrouwen die in uw paleis zijn, naar buiten worden gebracht en aan de Babylonische officieren worden gegeven. En die vrouwen zullen zich dan tegenover u bitter beklagen. ‘Fijne vrienden hebt u,’ zullen zij zeggen, ‘uw eigen vertrouwelingen hebben u bedrogen en aan uw lot overgelaten!’ 23 Al uw vrouwen en kinderen zullen aan de Babyloniërs worden uitgeleverd en ook u zult niet kunnen ontsnappen. De koning van Babel zal u gevangennemen en de stad zal worden platgebrand.” ’ 24 Toen zei Sedekia tegen Jeremia: ‘Laat niemand horen dat u dit aan mij hebt verteld, want dat zou uw dood betekenen! 25 En als mijn dienaren horen dat u met mij hebt gesproken en zij u met de dood bedreigen als u niet vertelt waarover het ging, 26 zeg dan maar dat u mij hebt gesmeekt u niet terug te sturen naar de kerker in het huis van Jonatan, omdat dat uw dood zou betekenen.’ 27 Inderdaad kwamen de leiders van de stad later bij Jeremia en vroegen hem waarom de koning hem had ontboden. Hij vertelde hun wat de koning hem had aangeraden en zij vertrokken zonder de waarheid te hebben ontdekt, want niemand had het gesprek afgeluisterd. 28 Jeremia bleef in de gevangenis tot Jeruzalem door de Babyloniërs werd ingenomen.

Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

1 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people: (Jer 20:1; Jer 37:3) 2 “Thus says the Lord: He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live. (Jer 21:9; Jer 38:17) 3 Thus says the Lord: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.” (Jer 32:3) 4 Then the officials said to the king, “Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.” (Jer 6:24; Jer 26:11; Jer 33:9) 5 King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.” (Jer 38:24) 6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. Jeremiah Rescued from the Cistern

7 When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate— (Jes 56:3; Jer 29:2; Jer 37:13; Jer 39:16; Hand 8:27)

8 Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king, (Jer 38:7) 9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.” (Jer 11:22; Jer 14:16; Jer 14:18; Jer 19:9; Jer 37:21)

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” (Jer 38:7) 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes. (Jer 38:6; Jer 38:7) 12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. (Jer 38:7; Jer 38:11) 13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. (Jer 38:6; Jer 38:11)

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

14 King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the Lord. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.” 15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As the Lord lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.” (Ruth 3:13; Jes 57:16; Jer 37:17; Jer 38:1)

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18 But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” (Jer 21:10; Jer 38:17) 19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” (Jer 37:13) 20 Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the Lord in what I say to you, and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. (Jer 40:9) 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is the vision which the Lord has shown to me: (Jer 38:17) 22 Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying, “‘Your trusted friends have deceived you and prevailed against you; now that your feet are sunk in the mud, they turn away from you.’ (Jer 20:10) 23 All your wives and your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.” (Jer 39:6; Jer 41:10; Jer 43:6) 24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25 If the officials hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,’ (Jer 38:5) 26 then you shall say to them, ‘I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” (Jer 37:20) 27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard. 28 And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken. (Jer 32:2)
