1-2De HERE sprak tegen Jeremia toen koning Sedekia Paschur, de zoon van Malkia, en de priester Zefanja, de zoon van Maäseja, naar Jeremia stuurde en smeekte: ‘Vraag de HERE ons te helpen, want koning Nebukadnessar van Babel valt ons aan! Misschien wil de HERE ons genadig zijn en een machtig wonder doen, zoals Hij vroeger deed, zodat Nebukadnessar zijn troepen moet terugtrekken.’3-4Jeremia antwoordde: ‘Ga terug naar koning Sedekia en zeg hem dat de HERE God van Israël zegt: “Al uw wapens zal Ik tegen u gebruiken in de strijd tegen de koning van Babel en de Chaldeeën die u belegeren. Ik zal de vijand massaal tot in het hart van deze stad laten doordringen.5Ik zal Zelf tegen u vechten en mijn vurige toorn op u koelen.6Ik zal deze stad treffen met een verschrikkelijke pest waardoor mens en dier zullen sterven.7En uiteindelijk zal Ik koning Sedekia, zijn hofhouding en alle in de stad overgebleven inwoners overgeven aan koning Nebukadnessar van Babel. Hij zal hen zonder genade afslachten.”8Vertel deze mensen dat de HERE zegt: “Maak nu uw keus tussen leven en dood!9Wie hier in Jeruzalem blijft, zal worden gedood door uw vijanden of sterven van de honger of ziekte. Maar wie de stad uitgaat en zich overgeeft aan de Chaldeeën, blijft in leven.10Want Ik heb Mij tegen deze stad gekeerd, Ik zal haar vijand en niet meer haar vriend zijn,” zegt de HERE. “De koning van Babel zal de stad innemen en haar volledig in de as leggen.” ’11-12Wat het koningshuis van Juda betreft, moest Jeremia van de HERE het volgende zeggen: ‘Geslacht van David, luister naar wat de HERE u te zeggen heeft: “Ik sta klaar om u te veroordelen voor al het kwaad dat u hebt gedaan. Wees rechtvaardig voor degenen die u berecht! En snel, voordat mijn brandende toorn op u neerkomt als een vuur dat geen mens kan doven.13Ik zal vechten tegen de stad Jeruzalem, die daar op een rots boven het dal ligt en nu nog bralt: ‘Wij zijn veilig, niemand kan ons hier wat doen!’14Maar Ik zal u straffen om uw zonden,” zegt de HERE. “Ik zal een vuur aansteken in de bossen dat de hele omgeving zal verbranden.” ’

And I will bring them together into the midst of this city. They shall die of a great pestilence.7Afterward, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people in this city who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword.
