1 Maar Abram en Sarai kregen geen kinderen. Daarom gaf Sarai haar dienares, het Egyptische meisje Hagar, als tweede vrouw aan Abram. 2 ‘De HERE heeft mij geen kinderen gegeven,’ zei Sarai, ‘neem daarom mijn dienares tot vrouw. Haar kinderen zullen dan de mijne zijn.’ 3 Abram stemde in met Saraiʼs voorstel. Dit gebeurde tien jaar nadat Abram in Kanaän kwam. 4 Hij had gemeenschap met Hagar en zij raakte in verwachting. Toen ze dat merkte, nam zij echter een hooghartige houding aan tegenover haar meesteres Sarai. 5 Sarai beklaagde zich daarover bij Abram. ‘Het is allemaal jouw schuld,’ zei ze boos. ‘Ik heb je mijn dienares gegeven en nu zij in verwachting is, kijkt ze op mij neer. Moge de HERE rechtspreken over wat mij is aangedaan.’ 6 ‘Je mag haar van mij onder handen nemen als je dat nodig vindt,’ antwoordde Abram. Toen nam Sarai Hagar onder handen en sloeg haar, zodat ze vluchtte. 7 De Engel van de HERE vond Hagar bij een bron in de woestijn langs de weg naar Sur. 8 De Engel zei: ‘Hagar, dienares van Sarai, waar komt u vandaan en waar gaat u heen?’ Hagar antwoordde: ‘Ik ben op de vlucht voor mijn meesteres.’ 9 De Engel zei: ‘Ga terug naar uw meesteres en gehoorzaam haar, 10 want uw nakomelingen zullen een groot volk worden. 11 U bent in verwachting en u zult een zoon krijgen. Noem hem Ismaël (God luistert), want de HERE heeft uw klachten gehoord. 12 Uw zoon zal een wildebras worden, een vrijbuiter! Hij zal zich veel vijanden maken en zijn hele familie trotseren.’ 13 Hierna noemde Hagar de naam van de Here—want Hij was het die met haar had gesproken—‘de God, die ziet en door mij werd gezien.’ Ze was verbaasd dat zij God had gezien en toch nog in leven was. 14 Later werd de bron in de woestijn ‘De bron van de Levende die mij ziet’ genoemd. Hij ligt tussen Kades en Bered. 15-16 Zo kreeg Abram een zoon van Hagar en hij noemde hem Ismaël. Abram was toen zesentachtig jaar oud.

1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. (1Mo 15,2; 1Mo 21,9; Gal 4,24) 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children[1] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. (1Mo 12,5) 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.[2] (1Sam 1,6) 5 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” (1Mo 31,53; 1Sam 24,12) 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. 7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. (1Mo 25,18; 2Mo 15,22) 8 And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” 9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” (1Mo 17,20; 1Mo 21,18; 1Mo 25,12) 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael,[3] because the Lord has listened to your affliction. (1Mo 29,32) 12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” (1Mo 21,20; 1Mo 25,18; Hi 39,5) 13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,”[4] for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”[5] (1Mo 32,30; 2Mo 19,21; 2Mo 33,20; Ri 13,22) 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi;[6] it lies between Kadesh and Bered. (1Mo 14,7; 1Mo 20,1; 1Mo 24,62; 1Mo 25,11; 4Mo 13,26) 15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
