1Na deze gebeurtenissen sprak de HERE met Abram en zei: ‘Wees niet bang Abram, want Ik zal u beschermen en zegenen.’2Maar Abram zei: ‘Och HERE, mijn God, U kunt mij wel zegenen, maar wat helpt dat, nu ik geen zoon heb?3Wanneer ik sterf, zal de Damascener Eliëzer al mijn bezittingen erven. Een dienaar zal mijn erfgenaam worden.’4Maar de HERE nam weer het woord: ‘Niemand anders dan uw eigen zoon zal uw erfgenaam zijn.’5God nam Abram mee naar buiten en wees naar de nachtelijke hemel: ‘Kijk naar boven en tel al die sterren eens als u kunt! Zo zal uw nageslacht zijn: ontelbaar!’6Abram geloofde het woord van de HERE en dat was de reden dat God hem als een rechtvaardig mens beschouwde.7Hij zei tegen Abram: ‘Ik ben de HERE, die u vanuit Ur der Chaldeeën hier heeft gebracht om u dit land te geven.’8Abram vroeg: ‘Maar HERE, mijn God, hoe kan ik er zeker van zijn dat U mij dit land zult geven?’9God antwoordde: ‘Haal een driejarige jonge koe, een driejarige geit, een driejarige ram, een tortelduif en een jonge duif.’10Abram hakte de dieren in tweeën, maar liet de vogels heel.11Toen de roofvogels op de kadavers neerstreken, joeg Abram ze weg.12Bij het ondergaan van de zon viel Abram in een diepe slaap en kreeg een angstige droom.13Toen zei God tegen Abram: ‘Uw nakomelingen zullen vierhonderd jaar in een vreemd land wonen, ze zullen daar slaven zijn en slecht behandeld worden.14Maar het volk dat hen onderdrukt, zal Ik straffen. Daarna zal uw volk wegtrekken met grote rijkdommen.15Maar u zult een hoge leeftijd bereiken en rustig kunnen sterven.16Na vier generaties zullen uw nakomelingen hier terugkeren, want eerder zal de slechtheid van de Amorieten niet het peil bereiken waarop Ik ze zal straffen.’17Toen de zon onder was en het donker begon te worden, zag Abram een rokende vuurpot en een vlammende fakkel tussen de helften van de dode dieren doorgaan.18Die dag sloot de HERE een verbond met Abram en zei: ‘Ik zal dit land aan uw nakomelingen geven, van de Nijl tot de rivier de Eufraat.19-21En zij zullen de Kenieten, de Kenizzieten, de Kadmonieten, de Hethieten, de Perizzieten, de Refaïeten, de Amorieten, de Kanaänieten, de Girgasieten en de Jebusieten onderwerpen.’
1After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” (Gen 26:24; Ps 3:3; Ps 18:2; Ps 84:11; Ps 119:114; Dan 10:12; Luk 1:13; Luk 1:30)2But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue[1] childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”3And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” (Gen 14:14)4And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son[2] shall be your heir.” (Gen 17:16)5And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (Gen 22:17; Gen 26:4; Ex 32:13; Deut 1:10; Deut 10:22; 1 Kron 27:23; Ps 147:4; Rom 4:18; Heb 11:12)6And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. (Ps 106:31; Rom 4:3; Rom 4:9; Rom 4:22; Gal 3:6; Jak 2:23)7And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” (Gen 11:31; Gen 12:1; Neh 9:7; Ps 105:42; Ps 105:44; Hand 7:2)8But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” (Ri 6:17; 2 Kon 20:8; Ps 86:17; Jes 7:11; Luk 1:18)9He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”10And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half. (Lev 1:17; Jer 34:18)11And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.12As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. (Gen 2:21)13Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. (Ex 1:11; Ex 3:7; Ex 12:40; Hand 7:6; Gal 3:17)14But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. (Ex 6:6; Ex 12:36; Ps 105:37)15As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. (Gen 25:8)16And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” (1 Kon 21:26; Dan 8:23; Am 2:9; Mat 23:32; 1 Tess 2:16)17When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.18On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give[3] this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, (Gen 12:7; Gen 13:15; Gen 24:7; Gen 26:4; Ex 23:31; Num 34:2; Deut 1:7; Deut 34:4; Joz 1:4; Neh 9:8)19the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
