1Zo verlieten zij Egypte en trokken weer noordwaarts naar de Negev: Abram, zijn vrouw, Lot en alles wat zij bezaten.2Abram had veel vee, zilver en goud.3Zij trokken net zo lang in noordelijke richting tot ze bij hun oude kamp tussen Betel en Ai kwamen.4Het altaar dat Abram daar had gebouwd, stond er nog en opnieuw aanbad Abram daar de naam van de HERE.5Lot had net als Abram veel vee en tenten voor zichzelf en zijn dienaren.6Daarom konden zij niet bij elkaar blijven, want het land was niet groot genoeg voor al hun vee.7De herders van Abram en Lot kregen zelfs onderling ruzie, wat gevaarlijk was vanwege de vijandige Kanaänieten en Perizzieten die daar woonden.8Abram besprak het probleem met Lot. ‘Het is niet goed dat wij ruziemaken en dat onze herders met elkaar overhoop liggen,’ meende hij. ‘Wij zijn tenslotte familie!9Laten we daarom uit elkaar gaan, er is hier plaats genoeg. Als jij een stuk grond in het oosten kiest, ga ik naar het westen. Als jij een plaats in het westen kiest, ga ik naar het oosten.’10Lot keek goed om zich heen en zag het vruchtbare gebied langs de rivier de Jordaan, met overal genoeg water. Voordat de HERE Sodom en Gomorra vernietigde, leek het gebied tot Soar aan toe wel op de hof van Eden of het land Egypte.11Daarom koos Lot voor de Jordaanstreek in het oosten en trok er met zijn vee en zijn dienaren heen. Hij en Abram gingen uit elkaar.12Abram bleef in Kanaän en Lot vestigde zich in de steden van de Jordaanstreek in de buurt van de stad Sodom.13Maar de inwoners van dit gebied waren erg slecht en zondigden tegen de HERE.14-15Nadat Lot was vertrokken, zei de HERE tegen Abram: ‘Kijk zo ver u kunt naar alle kanten, want al dit land zal Ik u en uw nakomelingen geven.16Ik zal u zo veel nakomelingen geven dat ze, net als het stof van de aarde, niet kunnen worden geteld!17Doorkruis dit land in alle richtingen, dan zult u zien wat Ik u allemaal ga geven.’18Abram sloeg zijn kamp op bij de eikenbossen van Mamre, in de buurt van Hebron en bouwde daar een altaar voor de HERE.
1So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb. (Gen 12:9)2Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. (Gen 24:35; Ps 112:1; Spr 10:22)3And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,4to the place where he had made an altar at the first. And there Abram called upon the name of the Lord. (Gen 12:7)5And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents,6so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, (Gen 36:6)7and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land. (Gen 12:6; Gen 26:20)8Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.[1] (Hand 7:26; 1 Cor 6:1)9Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” (Gen 20:15; Gen 34:10)10And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) (Gen 2:8; Gen 14:2; Gen 14:8; Gen 19:17; Gen 19:22; Gen 19:24; Gen 19:25; Gen 19:28; Deut 34:3; 1 Kon 7:46; Jes 51:3; Ez 28:13; Joël 2:3; Mat 3:5)11So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other.12Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom.13Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord. (Gen 18:20; Ez 16:49; 2 Petr 2:7)14The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, (Gen 28:14)15for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. (Gen 12:7; Gen 15:18; Gen 17:8; Gen 24:7; Gen 26:4; Gen 28:13; Gen 35:12; Deut 34:4; 2 Kron 20:7; Hand 7:5)16I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. (Gen 15:5; Gen 22:17; Gen 28:14; Gen 32:12; Num 23:10; 1 Kon 3:8)17Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.”18So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks[2] of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.
