1Zo kwam David in de stad Nob terecht, waar hij de priester Achimelech opzocht. Toen de priester David tegemoet liep, begon hij te beven. ‘Waarom bent u alleen?’ vroeg hij, ‘waarom is er niemand bij u?’2‘De koning heeft mij op een geheime missie gestuurd,’ loog David. ‘Hij verbood mij ook maar iemand te zeggen waarvoor ik hier ben. Ik heb mijn mannen opgedragen zich later op een afgesproken plaats bij mij te voegen.3Hebt u trouwens nog iets te eten? Geef mij maar vijf broden of iets anders wat u kunt missen.’4‘We hebben geen gewoon brood meer,’ antwoordde de priester, ‘maar er is nog wel heilig brood. Dat kunt u wel krijgen, mits uw mannen niet kortgeleden met een vrouw hebben geslapen!’5‘Wees maar gerust,’ zei David, ‘sinds drie dagen is geen vrouw in onze nabijheid geweest. En omdat zij al rein blijven tijdens gewone opdrachten, zijn zij het nu helemaal!’6Omdat geen ander voedsel voorhanden was, gaf de priester hem het heilige brood, de toonbroden die voor de ogen van de HERE in de tabernakel waren geplaatst. Het was die dag net vervangen door vers brood.7Nu was juist die dag de Edomiet Doëg, de voorman van Sauls herders, daar in de tabernakel om zich voor de HERE af te zonderen.8David vroeg Achimelech of hij een speer of een zwaard had dat hij mocht gebruiken. ‘De opdracht van de koning vereiste zoʼn haast en ik ben er zo snel vandoor gegaan, dat ik geen wapen kon meenemen,’ legde David hem uit.9‘Dat komt goed uit,’ meende de priester, ‘want ik heb hier het zwaard van de Filistijn Goliat die u zelf in het Terebintendal hebt gedood. Het ligt in een mantel gewikkeld in de kleedkamer. Als u wilt, kunt u dat nemen, want iets anders hebben wij hier niet.’ ‘Wat wil ik nog meer,’ zei David, ‘geef me dat zwaard maar!’10David vervolgde haastig zijn weg en vluchtte verder weg voor Saul. Zo kwam hij bij koning Achis van Gat.11Maar Achisʼ officieren waren niet zo blij met zijn aanwezigheid. ‘Is dit niet David, de koning van Israël?’ vroegen zij. ‘Hij is toch degene voor wie het volk toentertijd danste en over wie het zong: “Saul heeft duizenden verslagen en David tienduizenden”?’12David hoorde deze opmerkingen en was bang voor wat koning Achis hem zou doen.13Daarom trok hij een idioot gezicht en deed alsof hij gek was! Hij krabde aan de deuren en liet zijn speeksel langs zijn baard lopen,14-15zodat koning Achis tegen zijn mannen zei: ‘Waarom brengen jullie mij een waanzinnige? Die hebben we zelf al genoeg! Wat moet ik met zoʼn kerel in mijn huis?’

1[1] Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” (1Sam 14,3; 1Sam 16,4; 1Sam 22,9; 1Sam 22,11; 1Sam 22,19; Neh 11,32; Jes 10,32; Mk 2,26)2And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place.3Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.”4And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” (2Mo 19,15; 2Mo 25,30; 3Mo 24,5; Mt 12,3; Mk 2,25; Lk 6,3)5And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. David Flees to Gath
10And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath.11And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” (1Sam 18,7; 1Sam 29,5)12And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. (Lk 2,19)13So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.14Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me?15Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”
