1Broeders en zusters, toen ik bij u was, kon ik u nog niet toespreken als geestelijke mensen. U leidde uw eigen leven en deed uw eigen zin. Uw verhouding met Christus was nog zó pril dat ik u alleen maar melk kon geven.2Vast voedsel was te zwaar voor u en dat is helaas nog steeds het geval. Ook nu nog wordt u door uw eigen verlangens beheerst.3Want als u jaloers bent en elkaar niet kunt verdragen, wordt u blijkbaar nog door uw eigen verlangens beheerst. Dan bent u net als de ongelovige mensen.4Als de een zegt bij Paulus te horen en de ander bij Apollos, is dat erg menselijk geredeneerd.5Wie is Apollos en wie ben ik? God heeft ons willen gebruiken om u tot het geloof in Christus te brengen, ieder van ons zoals de Here het ons opgedragen heeft.6Ik heb het geloof in u geplant, Apollos heeft het verder verzorgd, maar alleen God kon het laten groeien.7De planter en de verzorger zijn niet belangrijk, maar God wel. Hij geeft de groei.8De planter en de verzorger kunnen niet zonder elkaar. Zij krijgen allebei de beloning die hun toekomt, afhankelijk van het werk dat zij deden.9Wij zijn Gods medewerkers en u bent Gods akker. Of anders gezegd: Gods gebouw.10God heeft mij het voorrecht en de kracht gegeven om als een goed architect de fundering te leggen waarop een ander voortbouwt. Natuurlijk moet iedereen wel oppassen hóe hij daarop bouwt.11Want een andere fundering dan Jezus Christus mag niemand leggen.12U kunt op die ene fundering met allerlei materialen bouwen, met goud, zilver en edelsteen, óf met hout, hooi en stro.13Het zal vanzelf blijken wat u hebt gedaan, want de grote dag van de Here komt met vuur. In het vuur blijft alleen over wat waardevol is, de rest verbrandt.14Als u met vuurvast materiaal op de fundering hebt gebouwd, krijgt u loon.15Als uw werk verbrandt, zult u verlies lijden. U zult zelf gered worden, maar dan wel door het vuur heen.16Weet u niet dat u zelf de tempel van God bent en dat zijn Geest in u woont?17Als iemand Gods tempel beschadigt, zal God hem schade toebrengen. Want Gods tempel is heilig. En u bent de tempel van God!18Maak uzelf niets wijs. Als iemand zich verbeeldt in deze wereld een wijs mens te zijn, moet hij dwaas worden. Dan pas zult u weten wat wijs is.19De wijsheid van deze wereld is voor God immers dwaasheid! Zo staat het ook in de Boeken: ‘God vangt de wijzen in hun eigen sluwheid,’20en: ‘De Here weet dat wat er in wijze mensen omgaat nutteloos is.’21Kijk geen mensen naar de ogen, want in God hebt u alles al ontvangen.22Of het nu om Paulus, Apollos of Petrus gaat, of om de wereld, het leven en de dood, of om heden of toekomst: alles ligt vast in Gods hand en is van u.23Want u bent van Christus en Christus is van God.

(2 Cor 12:11; Gal 2:6; Gal 6:3)8He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. (Mat 16:27; Rom 2:6; 1 Cor 3:14; 1 Cor 4:5; 1 Cor 15:58; Gal 6:4; 2 Joh 1:8)9For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. (Ps 127:1; Mar 16:20; 1 Cor 3:16; 2 Cor 6:1; Ef 2:20; Col 2:7)10According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled[2] master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. (Rom 12:3; Rom 15:20; 1 Cor 3:11; 1 Cor 4:15; 2 Petr 3:15; Op 21:14)11For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (Jes 28:16; 2 Cor 11:4; Gal 1:6; Ef 2:20)12Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—13each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. (1 Cor 3:15; 1 Cor 4:5; 2 Tess 1:8; 1 Petr 1:7)14If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. (1 Cor 3:8)15If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. (Ps 66:12; Jes 43:2; Judas 1:23)16Do you not know that you[3] are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? (1 Cor 6:19; 2 Cor 6:16; Ef 2:21)17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. (2 Cor 7:1)18Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. (Jes 5:21; Jer 8:8; 1 Cor 8:2; Gal 6:3)19For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” (Job 5:13; 1 Cor 1:20)20and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” (Ps 94:11)21So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, (Rom 8:28; 1 Cor 1:12; 1 Cor 3:4; 1 Cor 4:6)22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours,23and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
