1Im Anfang war das Wort und das Wort war bei Gott und das Wort war Gott. (1Mo 1,1; 1Joh 1,1)2Dieses war im Anfang bei Gott.3Alles ist durch das Wort geworden und ohne es wurde nichts, was geworden ist.[1] (1Kor 8,6; Kol 1,16; Hebr 1,2)4In ihm war Leben und das Leben war das Licht der Menschen. (Joh 5,26; Joh 8,12; Joh 9,5; Joh 12,46)5Und das Licht leuchtet in der Finsternis und die Finsternis hat es nicht erfasst.[2]6Ein Mensch trat auf, von Gott gesandt; sein Name war Johannes. (Mt 3,1; Mk 1,4; Lk 3,2)7Er kam als Zeuge, um Zeugnis abzulegen für das Licht, damit alle durch ihn zum Glauben kommen. (Joh 1,19; Joh 3,26; Joh 5,33)8Er war nicht selbst das Licht, er sollte nur Zeugnis ablegen für das Licht.9Das wahre Licht, das jeden Menschen erleuchtet, kam in die Welt.10Er war in der Welt und die Welt ist durch ihn geworden, aber die Welt erkannte ihn nicht.11Er kam in sein Eigentum, aber die Seinen nahmen ihn nicht auf.12Allen aber, die ihn aufnahmen, gab er Macht, Kinder Gottes zu werden, allen, die an seinen Namen glauben, (Gal 3,26; 1Joh 3,1)13die nicht aus dem Blut, nicht aus dem Willen des Fleisches, nicht aus dem Willen des Mannes, sondern aus Gott geboren sind. (Joh 3,6; 1Joh 5,18)14Und das Wort ist Fleisch geworden und hat unter uns gewohnt und wir haben seine Herrlichkeit geschaut, die Herrlichkeit des einzigen Sohnes vom Vater, voll Gnade und Wahrheit. (1Joh 1,1)15Johannes legt Zeugnis für ihn ab und ruft: Dieser war es, über den ich gesagt habe: Er, der nach mir kommt, ist mir voraus, weil er vor mir war. (Mt 11,3; Joh 1,30)16Aus seiner Fülle haben wir alle empfangen, Gnade über Gnade.17Denn das Gesetz wurde durch Mose gegeben, die Gnade und die Wahrheit kamen durch Jesus Christus.18Niemand hat Gott je gesehen. Der Einzige, der Gott ist und am Herzen des Vaters ruht, er hat Kunde gebracht. (2Mo 33,18; Joh 6,46; Joh 14,9; 1Joh 4,12)
Das Zeugnis des Täufers
19Und dies ist das Zeugnis des Johannes, als die Juden von Jerusalem aus Priester und Leviten zu ihm sandten mit der Frage: Wer bist du? (Joh 1,7; Joh 5,31; Joh 8,14)20Er bekannte und leugnete nicht; er bekannte: Ich bin nicht der Christus.21Sie fragten ihn: Was dann? Bist du Elija? Und er sagte: Ich bin es nicht. Bist du der Prophet? Er antwortete: Nein.[3] (5Mo 18,15; Mt 17,10; Lk 9,8; Joh 6,14)22Da sagten sie zu ihm: Wer bist du? Wir müssen denen, die uns gesandt haben, Antwort geben. Was sagst du über dich selbst?23Er sagte: Ich bin die Stimme eines Rufers in der Wüste: Ebnet den Weg für den Herrn!, wie der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat. (Jes 40,3; Mt 3,3; Mk 1,3; Lk 3,4)24Die Abgesandten gehörten zu den Pharisäern.[4] (Mt 3,1; Mk 1,4; Lk 3,3)25Sie fragten Johannes und sagten zu ihm: Warum taufst du dann, wenn du nicht der Christus bist, nicht Elija und nicht der Prophet?26Johannes antwortete ihnen: Ich taufe mit Wasser. Mitten unter euch steht einer, den ihr nicht kennt,27der nach mir kommt; ich bin nicht würdig, ihm die Riemen der Sandalen zu lösen.28Dies geschah in Betanien, jenseits des Jordan, wo Johannes taufte. (Joh 10,40)29Am Tag darauf sah er Jesus auf sich zukommen und sagte: Seht, das Lamm Gottes, das die Sünde der Welt hinwegnimmt! (Jes 53,7; 1Joh 3,5)30Er ist es, von dem ich gesagt habe: Nach mir kommt ein Mann, der mir voraus ist, weil er vor mir war. (Joh 1,15)31Auch ich kannte ihn nicht; aber ich bin gekommen und taufe mit Wasser, damit er Israel offenbart wird.32Und Johannes bezeugte: Ich sah, dass der Geist vom Himmel herabkam wie eine Taube und auf ihm blieb. (Mt 3,13; Mk 1,9; Lk 3,21)33Auch ich kannte ihn nicht; aber er, der mich gesandt hat, mit Wasser zu taufen, er hat mir gesagt: Auf wen du den Geist herabkommen und auf ihm bleiben siehst, der ist es, der mit dem Heiligen Geist tauft.34Und ich habe es gesehen und bezeugt: Dieser ist der Sohn Gottes.
Die Berufung der ersten Jünger
35Am Tag darauf stand Johannes wieder dort und zwei seiner Jünger standen bei ihm.36Als Jesus vorüberging, richtete Johannes seinen Blick auf ihn und sagte: Seht, das Lamm Gottes! (Joh 1,29)37Die beiden Jünger hörten, was er sagte, und folgten Jesus.38Jesus aber wandte sich um, und als er sah, dass sie ihm folgten, sagte er zu ihnen: Was sucht ihr? Sie sagten zu ihm: Rabbi - das heißt übersetzt: Meister -, wo wohnst du?39Er sagte zu ihnen: Kommt und seht! Da kamen sie mit und sahen, wo er wohnte, und blieben jenen Tag bei ihm; es war um die zehnte Stunde.40Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, war einer der beiden, die das Wort des Johannes gehört hatten und Jesus gefolgt waren. (Mt 4,18; Mk 1,16; Lk 5,1)41Dieser traf zuerst seinen Bruder Simon und sagte zu ihm: Wir haben den Messias gefunden - das heißt übersetzt: Christus.42Er führte ihn zu Jesus. Jesus blickte ihn an und sagte: Du bist Simon, der Sohn des Johannes, du sollst Kephas heißen, das bedeutet: Petrus, Fels. (Mt 16,18; Mk 3,16; Lk 6,14)43Am Tag darauf wollte Jesus nach Galiläa aufbrechen; da traf er Philippus. Und Jesus sagte zu ihm: Folge mir nach! (Mt 8,22; Joh 21,19)44Philippus war aus Betsaida, der Stadt des Andreas und Petrus.45Philippus traf Natanaël und sagte zu ihm: Wir haben den gefunden, über den Mose im Gesetz und auch die Propheten geschrieben haben: Jesus, den Sohn Josefs, aus Nazaret.46Da sagte Natanaël zu ihm: Kann aus Nazaret etwas Gutes kommen? Philippus sagte zu ihm: Komm und sieh!47Jesus sah Natanaël auf sich zukommen und sagte über ihn: Sieh, ein echter Israelit, an dem kein Falsch ist. (Ps 32,2)48Natanaël sagte zu ihm: Woher kennst du mich? Jesus antwortete ihm: Schon bevor dich Philippus rief, habe ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum gesehen.49Natanaël antwortete ihm: Rabbi, du bist der Sohn Gottes, du bist der König von Israel! (Mt 14,33; Mt 16,16)50Jesus antwortete ihm: Du glaubst, weil ich dir sagte, dass ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum sah; du wirst noch Größeres als dieses sehen.51Und er sprach zu ihm: Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Ihr werdet den Himmel geöffnet und die Engel Gottes auf- und niedersteigen sehen über dem Menschensohn. (1Mo 28,12; Mk 14,62)
1In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.2He was with God in the beginning.3All things were made through him. Nothing that has been made was made without him.4Life was in him, and that life was the light for all people.5The light shines in the darkness. But the darkness has not overcome the light.6There was a man sent from God. His name was John.7He came to be a witness about that light. He was a witness so that all people might believe.8John himself was not the light. He came only as a witness to the light.9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10The Word was in the world. And the world was made through him. But the world did not recognise him.11He came to what was his own. But his own people did not accept him.12Some people did accept him and did believe in his name. He gave them the right to become children of God.13To be a child of God has nothing to do with human parents. Children of God are not born because of human choice or because a husband wants them to be born. They are born because of what God does.14The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. It is the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father. And the Word was full of grace and truth.15John was a witness about the Word. John cried out and said, ‘This was the one I was talking about. I said, “He who comes after me is more important than I am. He is more important because he existed before I was born.” ’16God is full of grace. From him we have all received grace in place of the grace already given.17In the past, God gave us grace through the law of Moses. Now, grace and truth come to us through Jesus Christ.18No one has ever seen God. But the One and Only is God and is at the Father’s side. The one at the Father’s side has shown us what God is like.
John the Baptist says that he is not the Messiah
19The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was. John spoke the truth to them.20He did not try to hide the truth. He spoke to them openly. He said, ‘I am not the Messiah.’21They asked him, ‘Then who are you? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the Prophet we’ve been expecting?’ they asked. ‘No’, he answered.22They asked one last time, ‘Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’23John replied, using the words of Isaiah the prophet. John said, ‘I’m the messenger who is calling out in the desert, “Make the way for the Lord straight.” ’ (Jes 40,3)24The Pharisees who had been sent25asked him, ‘If you are not the Messiah, why are you baptising people? Why are you doing that if you aren’t Elijah or the Prophet we’ve been expecting?’26‘I baptise people with water,’ John replied. ‘But someone is standing among you whom you do not know.27He is the one who comes after me. I am not good enough to untie his sandals.’28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the River Jordan. That was where John was baptising.
What John says about Jesus
29The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him. John said, ‘Look! The Lamb of God! He takes away the sin of the world!30This is the one I was talking about. I said, “A man who comes after me is more important than I am. That’s because he existed before I was born.”31I did not know him. But God wants to make it clear to Israel who this person is. That’s the reason I came baptising with water.’32Then John told them, ‘I saw the Holy Spirit come down from heaven like a dove. The Spirit remained on Jesus.33I myself did not know him. But the one who sent me to baptise with water told me, “You will see the Spirit come down and remain on someone. He is the one who will baptise with the Holy Spirit.”34I have seen it happen. I am a witness that this is God’s Chosen One.’
John’s disciples follow Jesus
35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.36He saw Jesus walking by. John said, ‘Look! The Lamb of God!’37The two disciples heard him say this. So they followed Jesus.38Then Jesus turned round and saw them following. He asked, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi, where are you staying?’ Rabbi means Teacher.39‘Come’, he replied. ‘You will see.’ So they went and saw where he was staying. They spent the rest of the day with him. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.40Andrew was Simon Peter’s brother. Andrew was one of the two disciples who heard what John had said. He had also followed Jesus.41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon. He told him, ‘We have found the Messiah.’ Messiah means Christ.42And he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas.’ Cephas means Peter, or Rock.
Jesus chooses Philip and Nathanael
43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, ‘Follow me.’44Philip was from the town of Bethsaida. So were Andrew and Peter.45Philip found Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’46‘Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’ Nathanael asked. ‘Come and see,’ said Philip.47Jesus saw Nathanael approaching. Here is what Jesus said about him. ‘He is a true Israelite. Nothing about him is false.’48‘How do you know me?’ Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, ‘I saw you while you were still under the fig tree. I saw you there before Philip called you.’49Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the king of Israel.’50Jesus said, ‘You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.’51Then he said to the disciples, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You will see heaven open. You will see the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man.’
