1 Da antwortete Ijob und sprach: 2 Wahrhaftig weiß ich, dass es so ist: / Wie wäre ein Mensch bei Gott im Recht! (Hi 4,17; Ps 143,2) 3 Wenn er mit ihm rechten wollte, / nicht auf eins von tausend könnte er ihm Antwort geben. 4 Weisen Sinnes und stark an Macht - / wer böte ihm Trotz und bliebe heil? 5 Er versetzt Berge; sie merken es nicht, / dass er in seinem Zorn sie umstürzt. (Ps 46,3; Jes 13,13) 6 Er erschüttert die Erde an ihrem Ort, / sodass ihre Säulen erzittern. 7 Er spricht zur Sonne, sodass sie nicht strahlt, / er versiegelt die Sterne. (Bar 3,34) 8 Er spannt allein den Himmel aus / und schreitet einher auf den Höhen des Meeres. 9 Er macht das Sternbild des Bären, den Orion, / das Siebengestirn, die Kammern des Südens. (Am 5,8) 10 Er macht so Großes, es ist nicht zu erforschen, / Wunderdinge, sie sind nicht zu zählen. (Hi 5,9) 11 Zieht er an mir vorüber, ich sehe ihn nicht, / fährt er daher, ich bemerke ihn nicht. (Hi 23,8) 12 Rafft er hinweg, wer hält ihn zurück? / Wer darf zu ihm sagen: Was machst du da? (Weis 12,12) 13 Gott hält seinen Zorn nicht zurück, / unter ihm mussten selbst Rahabs Helfer sich beugen. (Hi 7,2; Hi 26,12; Ps 89,11) 14 Wie sollte denn ich ihm Antwort geben, / wie meine Worte gegen ihn wählen? (1Mo 18,25; Ps 7,12) 15 Und wäre ich im Recht, ich könnte nicht antworten, / um Gnade müsste ich bei meinem Richter flehen. 16 Wollte ich rufen, würde er mir Antwort geben? / Ich glaube nicht, dass er auf meine Stimme hört. (Hi 5,8; Hi 8,5; Hi 31,35) 17 Er, der im Sturm mich niedertritt, / ohne Grund meine Wunden mehrt, (Hi 38,1; Hi 40,6) 18 er lässt mich nicht zu Atem kommen, / er sättigt mich mit Bitternis. 19 Geht es um Kraft, er ist der Starke, / geht es um Recht, wer lädt mich vor? 20 Wäre ich im Recht, mein eigener Mund spräche mich schuldig, / wäre ich ohne Tadel, er machte mich krumm. (Hi 15,6) 21 Schuldlos bin ich, doch achte ich nicht auf mich, / mein Leben werfe ich hin. 22 Einerlei ist es, so sage ich es denn: / Schuldlos wie schuldig bringt er um. (Pred 9,2) 23 Wenn die Geißel plötzlich tötet, / spottet er über der Unschuldigen Angst. 24 Die Erde ist in Frevlerhand gegeben, / das Gesicht ihrer Richter deckt er zu. / Ist er es nicht, wer ist es dann? (Hi 40,6) 25 Schneller als ein Läufer eilen meine Tage, / sie fliehen dahin und schauen kein Glück. (Hi 7,6; Weis 5,9) 26 Sie gleiten vorbei wie Kähne aus Schilf, / dem Adler gleich, der sich auf Beute stürzt. 27 Sage ich: Ich will meine Klage vergessen, / meine Miene ändern und heiter blicken!, 28 so graut mir vor all meinen Schmerzen. / Ich weiß, du sprichst mich nicht frei. 29 Ich muss nun einmal schuldig sein, / wozu mühe ich mich umsonst? 30 Wollte ich auch mit Schnee mich waschen, / meine Hände mit Lauge reinigen, (Ps 51,9; Jes 1,18; Jer 2,22) 31 du würdest mich doch in die Grube tauchen, / sodass meinen Kleidern vor mir ekelt. 32 Denn er ist kein Mann wie ich, / dem ich entgegnen könnte: / Lasst uns zusammen zum Gericht gehen! (Pred 6,10) 33 Es gibt keinen Schiedsmann zwischen uns, / der seine Hand auf uns beide legte. 34 Er nehme von mir seine Rute, / sein Schrecken soll mich nicht mehr ängstigen; (Hi 13,21) 35 dann will ich reden, ohne ihn zu fürchten. / Doch so ist es nicht um mich bestellt.

1 Then Job answered and said: 2 “Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be in the right before God? (Hi 4,17) 3 If one wished to contend with him, one could not answer him once in a thousand times. (Hi 10,2; Ps 143,2; Röm 3,20) 4 He is wise in heart and mighty in strength —who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?— (2Mo 7,13; 2Mo 32,9; Hi 12,13; Hi 36,5) 5 he who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger, 6 who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble; (Hi 26,11; Ps 75,3; Jes 2,19; Jes 2,21; Jes 13,13; Hag 2,6; Hag 2,21; Hebr 12,26) 7 who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars; 8 who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea; (Hi 26,7; Ps 104,2; Jer 10,12; Jer 51,15; Sach 12,1) 9 who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south; (1Mo 1,16; Hi 37,9; Hi 38,31; Hi 38,32; Am 5,8) 10 who does great things beyond searching out, and marvelous things beyond number. (Hi 5,9) 11 Behold, he passes by me, and I see him not; he moves on, but I do not perceive him. (Hi 23,8) 12 Behold, he snatches away; who can turn him back?
