Schlacht bei Gibeon

1 Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, hörte, dass Josua Ai erobert und den Bann an ihm vollzogen hatte - wie er es mit Jericho und seinem König gemacht hatte, so hatte er es auch mit Ai und seinem König gemacht - und dass die Einwohner von Gibeon mit den Israeliten Frieden geschlossen hatten und mitten unter ihnen leben durften. (Jos 10,6; Jos 10,8; Jos 10,9) 

2 Da bekam er große Angst; denn die Stadt Gibeon war ebenso groß wie die Städte mit Königssitz; sie war größer als Ai und alle ihre Männer waren kampferprobte Krieger. 

3 Darum sandte Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, Boten an Hoham, den König von Hebron, an Piram, den König von Jarmut, an Jafia, den König von Lachisch, und an Debir, den König von Eglon, und ließ ihnen sagen: 

4 Zieht herauf zu mir und helft mir! Wir wollen Gibeon schlagen, weil es mit Josua und den Israeliten Frieden geschlossen hat. 

5 Da sammelten sich die fünf Könige der Amoriter und zogen zusammen mit ihren ganzen Heeren hinauf: der König von Jerusalem, der König von Hebron, der König von Jarmut, der König von Lachisch und der König von Eglon. Sie belagerten Gibeon und eröffneten den Kampf gegen die Stadt. 

6 Darauf sandten die Männer von Gibeon zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal und ließen ihm sagen: Zieh deine Hand nicht ab von deinen Knechten! Komm schnell herauf zu uns, rette uns und komm uns zu Hilfe; denn alle Amoriterkönige, die das Bergland bewohnen, haben sich gegen uns zusammengetan. 

7 Da zog Josua mit dem ganzen Heer, mit allen kampferprobten Männern, von Gilgal herauf. 

8 Der HERR sagte zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen; denn ich gebe sie in deine Hand. Keiner von ihnen kann dir standhalten. 

9 Und Josua stieß plötzlich auf sie. Die ganze Nacht war er von Gilgal heraufgezogen. 

10 Der HERR versetzte sie beim Anblick der Israeliten in Verwirrung, sodass er ihnen bei Gibeon eine schwere Niederlage beibrachte. Er verfolgte sie in Richtung auf die Steige von Bet-Horon und schlug sie bis nach Aseka und Makkeda. (2Mo 23,27; Ri 4,15; 1Sam 7,10) 

11 Als sie auf der Flucht vor Israel an den Abhang von Bet-Horon kamen, warf der HERR große Steine auf sie vom Himmel her, bis nach Aseka hin, sodass viele umkamen. Es kamen mehr durch die Hagelsteine um, als die Israeliten mit dem Schwert töteten. 

12 Damals redete Josua zum HERRN, am Tage, da der HERR die Amoriter den Israeliten preisgab, und sprach vor den Augen Israels: Sonne, bleib stehen über Gibeon / und du, Mond, über dem Tal von Ajalon! – (Hab 3,11) 

13 Und die Sonne blieb stehen / und der Mond stand still, / bis das Volk an seinen Feinden Rache genommen hatte. Steht das nicht geschrieben im Buch des Aufrechten? Die Sonne blieb mitten am Himmel stehen und beeilte sich nicht, unterzugehen, ungefähr einen ganzen Tag lang. (2Sam 1,18) 

14 Nie hat es einen Tag gegeben wie diesen, an dem der HERR auf die Stimme eines Menschen gehört hätte; der HERR kämpfte nämlich für Israel. 

15 Danach kehrte Josua und mit ihm ganz Israel in das Lager nach Gilgal zurück. 

Sieg über die fünf Kanaaniterkönige

16 Jene fünf Könige aber waren geflohen und hatten sich in der Höhle bei Makkeda versteckt. 

17 Da meldete man Josua: Wir haben die fünf Könige gefunden; sie haben sich in der Höhle bei Makkeda versteckt. 

18 Josua sagte: Wälzt große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle und stellt einige Männer davor, um die Könige zu bewachen! 

19 Ihr aber bleibt nicht stehen, sondern verfolgt eure Feinde und schlagt auch ihre Nachhut! Lasst sie nicht bis zu ihren Städten gelangen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat sie in eure Hand gegeben. 

20 So brachten Josua und die Israeliten ihnen endgültig eine sehr schwere Niederlage bei, die sie völlig aufrieb. Es entkamen aber einige Überlebende, die in die befestigten Städte gelangten. 

21 Darauf kehrte das ganze Heer wohlbehalten in das Lager zu Josua nach Makkeda zurück und keiner hat mehr spitz gegen die Israeliten geredet. 

22 Dann sagte Josua: Öffnet den Eingang der Höhle und bringt diese fünf Könige aus der Höhle zu mir her! 

23 Sie taten so und führten diese fünf Könige aus der Höhle heraus: den König von Jerusalem, den König von Hebron, den König von Jarmut, den König von Lachisch und den König von Eglon. 

24 Als man diese Könige zu Josua herausgeführt hatte, rief Josua alle Männer Israels herbei und sagte zu den Anführern der Krieger, die mit ihm ausgezogen waren: Kommt her, setzt diesen Königen euren Fuß auf den Nacken! Sie kamen herbei und setzten ihnen den Fuß auf den Nacken. 

25 Und Josua sagte zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht und habt keine Angst! Seid mutig und stark! Denn so wird es der HERR mit allen euren Feinden machen, mit denen ihr kämpfen werdet. 

26 Danach erschlug sie Josua und tötete sie und hängte sie auf an fünf Bäumen. Dort blieben sie bis zum Abend hängen. (5Mo 21,23) 

27 Bei Sonnenuntergang befahl Josua, sie von den Bäumen abzunehmen und in die Höhle zu werfen, in der sie sich zuvor versteckt hatten. Dann wälzte man große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle; sie liegen dort bis zum heutigen Tag. 

Einnahme des südlichen Westjordanlandes

28 Am gleichen Tag nahm Josua Makkeda ein und erschlug seine Bewohner und seinen König mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. Er vollzog an ihnen und allem, was in der Stadt lebte, den Bann; niemand ließ er entkommen. Mit dem König von Makkeda machte er es, wie er es mit dem König von Jericho gemacht hatte. 

29 Dann zog Josua mit ganz Israel von Makkeda weiter nach Libna und kämpfte gegen Libna. 

30 Der HERR gab auch Libna und seinen König in die Hand Israels. Josua erschlug alles, was in ihm lebte, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes; niemand ließ er entkommen. Mit seinem König machte er es, wie er es mit dem König von Jericho gemacht hatte. 

31 Dann zog Josua mit ganz Israel von Libna weiter nach Lachisch, belagerte die Stadt und griff sie an. 

32 Und der HERR gab auch Lachisch in die Hand Israels. Josua nahm die Stadt am zweiten Tag ein. Er erschlug alles, was in ihr lebte, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, genauso, wie er es mit Libna gemacht hatte. 

33 Als Horam, der König von Geser, heranzog, um Lachisch zu helfen, schlug Josua auch ihn und sein Volk und ließ niemand übrig, der hätte entkommen können. 

34 Dann zog Josua mit ganz Israel von Lachisch weiter nach Eglon. Sie belagerten die Stadt und griffen sie an. 

35 Noch am gleichen Tag nahmen sie die Stadt ein und schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. An allem, was in ihr lebte, vollzog man am selben Tag den Bann, genauso, wie man es mit Lachisch gemacht hatte. 

36 Von Eglon zog Josua mit ganz Israel nach Hebron hinauf und griff es an. 

37 Sie nahmen die Stadt ein und erschlugen ihren König und alles, was in ihr lebte, ebenso die Bewohner aller ihrer Tochterstädte, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes; niemand ließ er entkommen, genauso, wie er es mit Eglon gemacht hatte. Er vollzog an der Stadt und allem, was in ihr lebte, den Bann. 

38 Dann wandte sich Josua mit ganz Israel gegen Debir und griff die Stadt an. 

39 Er nahm die Stadt ein, ihren König und ihre Tochterstädte, schlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und vollzog an allem, was in ihr lebte, den Bann; niemand ließ er entkommen. Wie er es mit Hebron gemacht hatte, so machte er es mit Debir und seinem König, ebenso wie er es mit Libna und seinem König gemacht hatte. 

40 So schlug Josua das ganze Land - das Bergland und den Negeb, die Schefela und ihre Ausläufer - mit allen seinen Königen. Niemand ließ er entkommen; an jedem Lebenshauch vollzog er den Bann, wie es der HERR, der Gott Israels, geboten hatte. 

41 Josua schlug sie von Kadesch-Barnea bis Gaza und das ganze Land Goschen und bis nach Gibeon. 

42 Aller dieser Könige und ihrer Länder bemächtigte sich Josua mit einem Schlag; denn der HERR, der Gott Israels, kämpfte für Israel. 

43 Dann kehrte Josua mit ganz Israel in das Lager nach Gilgal zurück.

The Sun Stands Still

1 As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, (Jos 6,21; Jos 6,24; Jos 8,22; Jos 8,26; Jos 9,15) 

2 he feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. (5Mo 11,25) 

3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 

4 “Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel.” (Jos 9,15; Jos 10,1) 

5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it. (Jos 9,2) 

6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, “Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.” (Jos 5,10; Jos 9,6) 

7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. (Jos 8,1; Jos 8,3) 

8 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you.” (Jos 1,5; Jos 11,6; Ri 4,14) 

9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 

10 And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. (Jos 16,3; Jos 16,5; Jos 18,13; Ri 4,15; 1Sam 7,10; 1Kön 9,17; 1Chr 7,24; 2Chr 8,5; Ps 18,14; Jes 28,21) 

11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword. (Jos 10,10; Ps 18,12; Jes 30,30; Offb 16,21) 

12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” (Jes 28,21; Hab 3,11) 

13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 

14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel. (Jos 10,42; Jos 23,3; Jos 23,10; 2Kön 20,11; Jes 38,8) 

15 So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. (Jos 10,43) 

Five Amorite Kings Executed

16 These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. (Jos 10,10; Jos 10,28) 

17 And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 

18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 

19 but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” (5Mo 25,18) 

20 When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, (Jos 8,24) 

21 then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel. (2Mo 11,7) 

22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 

23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 

24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 

25 And Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” (5Mo 3,21; 5Mo 7,19; 5Mo 31,6; Jos 1,6; Jos 1,9) 

26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening. (Jos 8,29) 

27 But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day. (5Mo 21,22) 

28 As for Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho. (Jos 6,21; Jos 10,10; Jos 10,16) 

Conquest of Southern Canaan

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah. (Jos 21,13) 

30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. (Jos 10,28) 

31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. (Jos 10,3) 

32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah. 

33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining. (Jos 16,10; Ri 1,29; 1Kön 9,15) 

34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. (Jos 10,3) 

35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish. 

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron. And they fought against it (Jos 14,13; Jos 15,13; Ri 1,10) 

37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it. 

38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to Debir and fought against it (Jos 15,15; Ri 1,11) 

39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king. 

40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. (5Mo 20,16; Jos 12,8) 

41 And Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon. (5Mo 9,23; Jos 11,16) 

42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. (Jos 10,14) 

43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. (Jos 10,15)

Battaglia di Gabaon

1 Quando Adoni-Sedec, re di Gerusalemme, udì che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l’aveva votata allo sterminio, che aveva trattato Ai e il suo re nel modo in cui aveva trattato Gerico e il suo re, che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto la pace con gli Israeliti ed erano in mezzo a loro, 

2 fu tutto spaventato. Infatti Gabaon era una città grande come una delle città regali, anche più grande di Ai, e tutti gli uomini suoi erano valorosi. 

3 Perciò Adoni-Sedec, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piram, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis e a Debir, re di Eglon: 

4 «Salite da me, soccorretemi e noi batteremo Gabaon, perché ha fatto la pace con Giosuè e con i figli d’Israele». 

5 Cinque re degli Amorei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon si radunarono, salirono con tutti i loro eserciti, si accamparono di fronte a Gabaon e l’attaccarono. 

6 Allora i Gabaoniti mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Ghilgal: «Non negare ai tuoi servi il tuo aiuto; affrèttati a salire da noi, liberaci, soccorrici, perché tutti i re degli Amorei che abitano la regione montuosa si sono radunati contro di noi». 

7 Giosuè dunque salì da Ghilgal, con tutta la gente di guerra e con tutti gli uomini segnalati per valore. 

8 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Non li temere, perché io li ho dati in tuo potere; nessuno di loro potrà resistere di fronte a te». 

9 Così Giosuè piombò loro addosso all’improvviso: aveva marciato tutta la notte da Ghilgal. 

10 E il Signore li mise in rotta davanti a Israele, che inflisse loro una grande sconfitta presso Gabaon, li inseguì per la via che sale a Bet-Oron, e li batté fino ad Azeca e a Maccheda. 

11 Mentre fuggivano davanti a Israele ed erano alla discesa di Bet-Oron, il Signore fece cadere dal cielo su di loro delle grosse pietre fino ad Azeca, ed essi perirono: quelli che morirono per le pietre della grandinata furono più numerosi di quelli che i figli d’Israele uccisero con la spada. 

12 Allora Giosuè parlò al Signore, il giorno che il Signore diede gli Amorei in mano ai figli d’Israele, e disse in presenza d’Israele: «Sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, luna, sulla valle di Aialon!» 

13 E il sole si fermò, e la luna rimase al suo posto, finché la nazione si fu vendicata dei suoi nemici. Questo non sta forse scritto nel libro del Giusto? E il sole si fermò in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare per quasi un giorno intero. 

14 E mai, né prima né poi, c’è stato un giorno simile a quello, nel quale il Signore abbia esaudito la voce di un uomo; perché il Signore combatteva per Israele. 

15 Poi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò all’accampamento di Ghilgal. 

16 Or i cinque re erano fuggiti, e si erano nascosti nella caverna di Maccheda. 

17 La cosa fu riferita a Giosuè e gli fu detto: «I cinque re sono stati trovati nascosti nella caverna di Maccheda». 

18 Allora Giosuè disse: «Rotolate delle grosse pietre all’imboccatura della caverna, e mettetevi degli uomini per far loro la guardia; 

19 ma voi non vi fermate; inseguite i vostri nemici e colpite le retroguardie; non li lasciate entrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore, il vostro Dio, li ha dati in vostro potere». 

20 Quando Giosuè e i figli d’Israele ebbero finito d’infliggere loro una completa disfatta, e quelli che scamparono si furono rifugiati nelle città fortificate, 

21 tutto il popolo tornò tranquillamente a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Maccheda, senza che nessuno osasse fiatare contro i figli d’Israele. 

22 Allora Giosuè disse: «Aprite l’imboccatura della caverna e conducetemi fuori quei cinque re». 

23 Quelli agirono così: fecero uscire dalla caverna quei cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis, il re di Eglon, e glieli condussero. 

24 E quando quei re furono tolti dalla caverna e condotti da Giosuè, Giosuè chiamò tutti gli uomini d’Israele e disse ai capi dei guerrieri che erano andati con lui: «Avvicinatevi, mettete il piede sul collo di questi re». Quelli si avvicinarono e misero il piede sul loro collo. 

25 Giosuè disse loro: «Non temete, non vi sgomentate, siate forti e coraggiosi, perché così farà il Signore a tutti i vostri nemici contro i quali dovrete combattere». 

26 Dopo ciò Giosuè li colpì e li uccise; quindi li appese a cinque alberi; e quelli rimasero appesi agli alberi fino alla sera. 

27 Al tramonto, Giosuè ordinò che fossero calati dagli alberi e gettati nella caverna dove si erano nascosti, e che all’imboccatura della caverna fossero messe delle grosse pietre. Esse sono rimaste lì fino a oggi. 

28 In quel medesimo giorno Giosuè prese Maccheda e fece passare a fil di spada la città e il suo re; li votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il re di Maccheda come aveva trattato il re di Gerico. 

Conquiste nel mezzogiorno

29 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Maccheda a Libna, e l’attaccò. 

30 Il Signore diede anche quella città con il suo re nelle mani d’Israele, e Giosuè la mise a fil di spada con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico. 

31 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Libna a Lachis; si accampò di fronte a questa e l’attaccò. 

32 Il Signore diede Lachis nelle mani d’Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno, e la mise a fil di spada, con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Libna. Allora Oram, re di Ghezer, salì in soccorso di Lachis. 

33 Ma Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo senza lasciarne scampare alcuno. 

34 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Lachis a Eglon; si accamparono di fronte a questa e l’attaccarono. 

35 La presero quel medesimo giorno e la misero a fil di spada. In quel giorno Giosuè votò allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come aveva fatto a Lachis. 

36 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele salì da Eglon a Ebron e l’attaccarono. 

37 La presero, la misero a fil di spada insieme con il suo re, con tutte le sue città e con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò sfuggire una, esattamente come aveva fatto a Eglon; la votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano. 

38 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele tornò verso Debir e l’attaccò. 

39 La prese con il suo re e con tutte le sue città; la misero a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, senza che ne scampasse una. Egli trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Ebron, come aveva trattato Libna e il suo re. 

40 Giosuè dunque batté tutto il paese, la contrada montuosa, la regione meridionale, la regione bassa, le pendici e tutti i loro re; non lasciò scampare nessuno, ma votò allo sterminio tutto ciò che aveva vita, come il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, aveva comandato. 

41 Così Giosuè li batté da Cades-Barnea fino a Gaza, e batté tutto il paese di Goscen fino a Gabaon. 

42 Giosuè prese in una volta sola tutti quei re e i loro paesi, perché il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, combatteva per Israele. 

43 Poi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò all’accampamento di Ghilgal.
