Wives Provided for the Tribe of Benjamin

1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, “No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.” (Jud 20:1; Jud 21:18) 2 And the people came to Bethel and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. (Jud 20:18; Jud 20:26; Jud 20:31) 3 And they said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?” 4 And the next day the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. (2Sa 24:25) 5 And the people of Israel said, “Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?” For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.” (Jud 5:23) 6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. (Jud 21:15) 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?” (Jud 21:16) 8 And they said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly. (1Sa 11:1; 1Sa 31:11) 9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there. (Jud 21:8) 10 So the congregation sent 12,000 of their bravest men there and commanded them, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones. (Jud 21:5) 11 This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.” (Nu 31:17) 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. (Jos 18:1) 13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon and proclaimed peace to them. (De 20:10; Jud 20:47) 14 And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them. 15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. (Jud 21:6) 16 Then the elders of the congregation said, “What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?” (Jud 21:7) 17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel. 18 Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” For the people of Israel had sworn, “Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.” (Jud 21:1) 19 So they said, “Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.” (Jud 20:31) 20 And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards 21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. (Ex 15:20; Jud 11:34) 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’” 23 And the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them. (Jud 20:48) 24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance. 25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. (Jud 17:6; Jud 18:1; Jud 19:1)

1 A Mitspa, les hommes d'Israël avaient juré: «Aucun de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à un Benjaminite.» 2 Le peuple vint à Béthel, et il y resta devant Dieu jusqu'au soir. Ils se mirent à pleurer abondamment, 3 et ils dirent: «Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, pourquoi cela s'est-il produit en Israël? Pourquoi manque-t-il aujourd'hui une tribu d'Israël?» 4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bon matin. Ils construisirent là un autel et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. 5 Les Israélites dirent: «Dans toutes les tribus d'Israël, qui n'est pas monté à l'assemblée devant l'Eternel?» En effet, on avait fait un serment solennel contre tout homme qui ne monterait pas vers l'Eternel à Mitspa; on avait dit: «Il sera puni de mort.» 6 En outre, les Israélites éprouvaient des regrets en pensant à Benjamin, leur frère, et ils se disaient: «Aujourd'hui une tribu a été supprimée d'Israël. 7 Que faire pour procurer des femmes aux survivants, puisque nous avons juré par l'Eternel de ne pas leur donner nos filles en mariage?» 8 Ils dirent donc: «Y a-t-il quelqu'un, dans les tribus d'Israël, qui ne soit pas monté vers l'Eternel à Mitspa?» Il se trouva que personne de Jabès en Galaad n'était venu au camp, à l'assemblée. 9 On procéda au dénombrement du peuple, et il n'y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabès en Galaad. 10 Alors l'assemblée envoya 12'000 soldats contre eux en leur donnant cet ordre: «Allez frapper du tranchant de l'épée les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, y compris les femmes et les enfants. 11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous exterminerez tout homme ainsi que toute femme qui a connu le lit d'un homme.» 12 Ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabès en Galaad 400 jeunes filles vierges, qui n'avaient pas eu de relations sexuelles avec un homme, et ils les amenèrent dans le camp à Silo, qui se trouve dans le pays de Canaan. 13 Toute l'assemblée envoya des messagers parler aux Benjaminites restés au rocher de Rimmon et leur annoncer la paix. 14 A ce moment-là, les Benjaminites revinrent et on leur donna les femmes de Jabès en Galaad à qui l'on avait laissé la vie. Mais il n'y en avait pas assez pour tous. 15 Le peuple éprouvait des regrets en pensant à Benjamin, car l'Eternel avait créé un vide parmi les tribus d'Israël. 16 Les anciens de l'assemblée dirent: «Que faire pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été exterminées?» 17 Ils ajoutèrent: «Il faut que les rescapés de Benjamin conservent leur héritage, il ne faut pas qu'une tribu soit effacée d'Israël. 18 Mais nous ne pouvons pas leur donner nos filles en mariage, car nous, les Israélites, nous avons juré: ‘Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à un Benjaminite!’» 19 Ils se rappelèrent alors qu'il y avait chaque année une fête de l'Eternel à Silo, qui se trouvait au nord de Béthel, à l'est de la route qui montait de Béthel à Sichem, et au sud de Lebona. 20 Alors ils donnèrent cet ordre aux Benjaminites: «Allez vous placer en embuscade dans les vignes. 21 Vous ferez le guet et, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo pour faire d'elle votre femme, et vous repartirez dans le pays de Benjamin. 22 Si leur père ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre auprès de nous, nous leur dirons: ‘Accordez-les-nous, car nous n'avons pas pris une femme pour chacun dans la guerre. Ce n'est pas vous qui les leur avez données. Dans ce cas-là, vous seriez coupables.’» 23 C'est ce que firent les Benjaminites. Ils prirent le nombre de femmes nécessaire parmi les danseuses qu'ils enlevèrent, puis ils partirent et retournèrent dans leur héritage. Ils reconstruisirent leurs villes et y habitèrent. 24 A ce moment-là, les Israélites repartirent de là, chacun dans sa tribu et dans son clan. Ils retournèrent chacun dans son héritage. 25 A cette époque-là, il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.
