1Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her. (2Sa 3:2; 1Ch 3:2; 1Ch 3:9)2And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her.3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man. (1Sa 16:9; 1Sa 17:13; 1Ch 2:13)4And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”5Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’”6So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” (Ge 18:6)7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.”8So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes.9And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him. (Ge 45:1)10Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.11But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”12She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate[1] me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing. (Ge 34:7; Le 18:9; Le 18:11; Le 20:17; Jud 19:23; Jud 20:6)13As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” (2Sa 3:33)14But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.15Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!”16But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.”[2] But he would not listen to her.17He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.”18Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves,[3] for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. (Ge 37:3; Jud 5:30; Ps 45:14)19And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went. (Jos 7:6; 2Sa 1:11; Jer 2:37)20And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house.21When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.[4]22But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar. (Ge 24:50; Ge 31:24)
Absalom Murders Amnon
23After two full years Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. (Ge 31:19; Ge 38:12; 1Sa 25:4)24And Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.”25But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him, but he would not go but gave him his blessing.26Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?”27But Absalom pressed him until he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.28Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” (Jud 19:6)29So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each mounted his mule and fled.30While they were on the way, news came to David, “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.”31Then the king arose and tore his garments and lay on the earth. And all his servants who were standing by tore their garments. (2Sa 1:11; 2Sa 12:16)32But Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, for Amnon alone is dead. For by the command of Absalom this has been determined from the day he violated his sister Tamar. (2Sa 13:3)33Now therefore let not my lord the king so take it to heart as to suppose that all the king’s sons are dead, for Amnon alone is dead.” (2Sa 19:19)
Absalom Flees to Geshur
34But Absalom fled. And the young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him[5] by the side of the mountain. (2Sa 13:37)35And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; as your servant said, so it has come about.”36And as soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came and lifted up their voice and wept. And the king also and all his servants wept very bitterly.37But Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son day after day. (2Sa 3:3; 2Sa 13:34; 2Sa 14:23; 2Sa 14:32; 2Sa 15:8; 1Ch 3:2)38So Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and was there three years. (2Sa 13:37)39And the spirit of the king[6] longed to go out[7] to Absalom, because he was comforted about Amnon, since he was dead. (Ge 24:67; Ge 37:35; Ge 38:12)

En effet, elle était vierge et il lui paraissait difficile de faire la moindre tentative auprès d'elle.3Amnon avait un ami du nom de Jonadab. C'était un fils de Shimea, le frère de David, et un homme très rusé.4Il lui demanda: «Pourquoi deviens-tu donc chaque matin plus abattu, toi qui es un fils de roi? Ne veux-tu pas me le dire?» Amnon lui répondit: «J'aime Tamar, la sœur de mon frère Absalom.»5Jonadab lui dit: «Mets-toi au lit et fais le malade. Quand ton père viendra te voir, tu lui diras: ‘Permets à ma sœur Tamar de venir me donner à manger. Qu'elle prépare un plat sous mes yeux, afin que je le voie, et qu'elle me serve elle-même à manger.’»6Amnon se coucha et fit le malade. Le roi vint le voir et Amnon lui dit: «Que ma sœur Tamar vienne donc faire deux gâteaux sous mes yeux et qu'elle me les serve elle-même.»7David fit dire à Tamar dans ses appartements: «Va donc chez ton frère Amnon et prépare-lui un plat.»8Tamar alla chez son frère Amnon, qui était couché. Elle prit de la pâte, la pétrit, prépara des gâteaux devant lui et les fit cuire.9Elle prit ensuite la poêle et les déposa devant lui, mais Amnon refusa de manger. Il ordonna de faire sortir tout le monde, et tout le monde sortit de chez lui.10Alors Amnon dit à Tamar: «Apporte le plat dans la chambre et sers-moi.» Tamar prit les gâteaux qu'elle avait faits et les porta à son frère Amnon dans la chambre.11Comme elle les lui présentait à manger, il l'attrapa et lui dit: «Viens, couche avec moi, ma sœur.»12Elle lui répondit: «Non, mon frère, ne me déshonore pas, car on n'agit pas de cette manière en Israël. Ne commets pas cet acte odieux!13Où irais-je, moi, traîner ma honte? Et toi, tu serais comme l'un des plus ignobles en Israël. Maintenant, parle donc au roi et il ne m'empêchera pas d'être à toi.»14Mais il ne voulut pas l'écouter. Il se montra plus fort qu'elle et il la viola, il coucha avec elle.15Puis Amnon éprouva de la haine envers elle, une haine plus forte encore que ne l'avait été son amour, et il lui dit: «Lève-toi, va-t'en!»16Elle lui répondit: «Non! N'augmente pas, en me chassant, le mal que tu m'as déjà fait.»17Il refusa de l'écouter. Appelant le garçon qui était à son service, il dit: «Qu'on fasse partir cette femme de chez moi, qu'on la mette dehors! Et ferme la porte derrière elle!»18Elle portait une robe de plusieurs couleurs. C'était en effet la tenue que portaient les filles du roi aussi longtemps qu'elles étaient vierges. Le serviteur d'Amnon la fit sortir et ferma la porte derrière elle.19Tamar déversa de la cendre sur sa tête et déchira sa robe multicolore. Elle mit la main sur sa tête et s'en alla en poussant des cris.20Son frère Absalom lui dit: «Est-ce que ton frère Amnon a couché avec toi? Maintenant, ma sœur, garde le silence, car c'est ton frère. Ne prends pas cette affaire trop à cœur.» Et Tamar s'installa, accablée, chez son frère Absalom.21Le roi David apprit tout ce qui s'était passé et il en fut très irrité.22Quant à Absalom, il ne parla ni en bien ni en mal à Amnon, mais il éprouva de la haine pour lui parce qu'il avait déshonoré sa sœur Tamar.
Meurtre d'Amnon et fuite d'Absalom
23Deux ans après, comme il avait les tondeurs de moutons chez lui à Baal-Hatsor, près d'Ephraïm, Absalom invita tous les fils du roi.24Il alla trouver le roi et dit: «Ton serviteur a les tondeurs de moutons chez lui. Que le roi et ses serviteurs viennent chez ton serviteur.»25Le roi dit à Absalom: «Non, mon fils! Nous n'irons pas tous chez toi, nous risquerions d'être une charge pour toi.» Absalom insista auprès de lui, mais le roi ne voulut pas y aller. Toutefois, il le bénit.26Absalom dit: «Permets du moins à mon frère Amnon de venir avec nous.» Le roi lui répondit: «Pourquoi irait-il chez toi?»27Sur l'insistance d'Absalom, le roi laissa Amnon et tous ses fils partir avec lui.28Absalom donna cet ordre à ses serviteurs: «Faites bien attention au moment où le cœur d'Amnon sera réjoui par le vin et où je vous dirai de le frapper! Alors faites-le mourir sans crainte! N'est-ce pas moi qui vous l'ordonne? Montrez-vous forts et pleins de courage!»29Les serviteurs d'Absalom traitèrent Amnon comme Absalom l'avait ordonné. Tous les fils du roi se levèrent alors, montèrent chacun sur son mulet et s'enfuirent.30Ils étaient encore en chemin quand le bruit parvint à David qu'Absalom avait tué tous les fils du roi et qu'il n'y avait pas un seul survivant.31Le roi se leva, déchira ses habits et se coucha par terre. Tous ses serviteurs se tenaient là, les habits déchirés.32Jonadab, fils de Shimea, le frère de David, prit la parole. Il dit: «Que mon seigneur ne pense pas que ce sont tous les jeunes gens, tous les fils du roi, qu'on a fait mourir. En effet, seul Amnon est mort. Absalom avait pris cette décision le jour où Amnon avait violé sa sœur Tamar.33Que le roi mon seigneur ne se tourmente donc pas à l'idée que tous ses fils seraient morts. En effet, seul Amnon est mort.»34Absalom prit la fuite. Or le jeune homme placé en sentinelle leva les yeux et regarda. Il vit une grande troupe venir par le chemin qui était derrière lui, du côté de la montagne.35Jonadab dit au roi: «Voici les fils du roi qui arrivent! Cela confirme ce que disait ton serviteur.»36Il finissait de parler quand les fils du roi arrivèrent. Ils se mirent à pleurer tout haut; le roi et tous ses serviteurs pleurèrent eux aussi abondamment.37Absalom avait pris la fuite et il se rendit chez Talmaï, fils d'Ammihur et roi de Gueshur. Quant à David, il menait tous les jours deuil sur son fils.38Absalom resta 3 ans à Gueshur, où il s'était rendu après avoir pris la fuite.39Le roi David cessa de poursuivre Absalom lorsqu'il fut consolé de la mort d'Amnon.
