1As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction,[1] doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, (Jos 6:21; Jos 6:24; Jos 8:22; Jos 8:26; Jos 9:15)2he[2] feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. (De 11:25)3So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,4“Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel.” (Jos 9:15; Jos 10:1)5Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it. (Jos 9:2)6And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, “Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.” (Jos 5:10; Jos 9:6)7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. (Jos 8:1; Jos 8:3)8And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you.” (Jos 1:5; Jos 11:6; Jud 4:14)9So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal.10And the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who[3] struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. (Jos 16:3; Jos 16:5; Jos 18:13; Jud 4:15; 1Sa 7:10; 1Ki 9:17; 1Ch 7:24; 2Ch 8:5; Ps 18:14; Isa 28:21)11And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword. (Jos 10:10; Ps 18:12; Isa 30:30; Re 16:21)12At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” (Isa 28:21; Hab 3:11)13And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.14There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel. (Jos 10:42; Jos 23:3; Jos 23:10; 2Ki 20:11; Isa 38:8)15So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. (Jos 10:43)
Five Amorite Kings Executed
16These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. (Jos 10:10; Jos 10:28)17And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”18And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them,19but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” (De 25:18)20When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, (Jos 8:24)21then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel. (Ex 11:7)22Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.”23And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.24And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks.25And Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” (De 3:21; De 7:19; De 31:6; Jos 1:6; Jos 1:9)26And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening. (Jos 8:29)27But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day. (De 21:22)28As for Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho. (Jos 6:21; Jos 10:10; Jos 10:16)
Conquest of Southern Canaan
29Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah. (Jos 21:13)30And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. (Jos 10:28)31Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. (Jos 10:3)32And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining. (Jos 16:10; Jud 1:29; 1Ki 9:15)34Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. (Jos 10:3)35And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.36Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron. And they fought against it (Jos 14:13; Jos 15:13; Jud 1:10)37and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.38Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to Debir and fought against it (Jos 15:15; Jud 1:11)39and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.40So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. (De 20:16; Jos 12:8)41And Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon. (De 9:23; Jos 11:16)42And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. (Jos 10:14)43Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. (Jos 10:15)
1ادونی صَدَق، پادشاه اورشليم، شنيد كه يوشع شهر عای را گرفته و به کلی ويران كرده و پادشاهش را كشته است، همانگونه كه قبلاً اريحا را ويران كرده و پادشاهش را از بين برده بود. او همچنين شنيد كه ساكنان جبعون با اسرائيل صلح كرده و با آنها متحد شدهاند.2او و مردم اورشليم با شنيدن اين خبرها بسيار ترسيدند، زيرا جبعون مانند ديگر شهرهای پادشاه نشين، بزرگ بود حتی بزرگتر از عای و مردمانش جنگجويانی شجاع بودند.3از اين رو ادونی صدق به فكر چاره افتاد و قاصدانی را نزد هوهام پادشاه حبرون، فرآم پادشاه يرموت، يافيع پادشاه لاخيش و دبير پادشاه عجلون فرستاد و اين پيغام را داد:4«بياييد مرا كمک كنيد تا به جبعون حمله كنيم، زيرا ساكنانش با يوشع و قوم اسرائيل پيمان صلح بستهاند.»5پس اين پنج پادشاه اموری با هم متحد شدند و لشكر خود را برای جنگ با جبعون بسيج نمودند.6بزرگان جبعون با شتاب قاصدانی به جلجال نزد يوشع فرستادند و التماس كرده، گفتند: «بشتابيد و خدمتگزاران خود را كمک كنيد و از نابودی نجات دهيد؛ تمام پادشاهان اموری كه در كوهستان ساكنند لشكرهای خود را بر ضد ما بسيج كردهاند.»7يوشع با تمام سربازان و جنگاوران شجاعش از جلجال به كمک مردم جبعون شتافت.8خداوند به يوشع فرمود: «از ايشان نترس، زيرا من آنها را به دست تو تسليم كردهام و كسی از ايشان يارای مقاومت در برابر تو را نخواهد داشت.»9يوشع راه بين جلجال و جبعون را شبانه پيمود و لشكرهای دشمن را غافلگير كرد.10خداوند دشمن را دچار وحشت نمود و اسرائيلیها عده زيادی از آنها را در جبعون كشتند و بقيه را تا گردنهٔ بيتحورون تعقيب نموده، تا عزيقه و مقيده به كشتار خود ادامه دادند.11وقتی دشمن به سرازيری بيتحورون رسيد، خداوند از آسمان بر سر آنها تگرگ درشت بارانيد كه تا به عزيقه ادامه داشت و عدهٔ زيادی از آنها را كشت. تعداد افرادی كه بهوسیلهٔ تگرگ كشته شدند بيشتر از آنانی بود كه با شمشير اسرائيلیها هلاک شدند!12در حالی که سربازان اسرائيلی دشمن را تعقيب میكردند و آنها را عاجز ساخته بودند، يوشع نزد خدا دعا كرد و در حضور بنیاسرائيل گفت: «ای آفتاب بر بالای جبعون، و ای ماه بر فراز درهٔ اَيَلون از حركت باز بايستيد.»13آفتاب و ماه از حركت باز ايستادند تا بنیاسرائيل دشمن را نابود كردند. اين واقعه در كتاب ياشر نيز نوشته شده است. پس آفتاب، تمام روز در وسط آسمان از حركت باز ايستاد!14نظير چنين روزی كه خدا آفتاب و ماه را به خاطر دعای يک انسان متوقف ساخته باشد هرگز ديده نشده و ديده نخواهد شد. در واقع، اين خداوند بود كه برای بنیاسرائيل میجنگيد.15پس از آن يوشع با تمام سربازانش به اردوگاه خود در جلجال بازگشتند.
شكست پادشاهان اموری
16اما در خلال جنگ، آن پنج پادشاه به مقيده گريختند و خود را در يک غار پنهان كردند.17يوشع وقتی از مخفيگاه آنها باخبر شد،18دستور داد: «دهانهٔ غار را با سنگهای بزرگ مسدود كنيد و چند نگهبان در آنجا بگذاريد تا مانع خروج آنها شوند؛19ولی شما از تعقيب دشمن دست برنداريد. به دنبال آنها برويد، از پشت سر به آنها حمله كنيد و نگذاريد دوباره به شهرهای خود بازگردند. خداوند، خدای شما آنها را به دست شما تسليم كرده است.»20يوشع و لشكر اسرائيل آنقدر به كشتار ادامه دادند تا افراد پنج لشكر دشمن نابود شدند، و فقط عده كمی از آنان جان به در بردند و توانستند خود را به شهرهای حصاردار خود برسانند.21سپس تمام لشكر اسرائيل به سلامت به اردوگاه خود در مقيده بازگشتند. از آن پس، هيچكس جرأت نكرد عليه قوم اسرائيل حتی سخنی بر زبان بياورد.22بعد يوشع گفت: «سنگها را از دهانهٔ غار كنار بزنيد و آن پنج پادشاه را بيرون بياوريد.»23پس آنها پادشاهان اورشليم، حبرون، يرموت، لاخيش و عجلون را بيرون آوردند.24يوشع تمام مردان اسرائيل را فرا خواند و به سردارانی كه همراه او بودند دستور داد پاهای خود را بر گردن آن پنج پادشاه بگذارند، و آنها چنين كردند.25سپس به مردان خود گفت: «از كسی نترسيد و جرأت خود را از دست ندهيد، بلكه قوی و شجاع باشيد، زيرا خداوند با تمام دشمنان شما بدين نحو رفتار خواهد كرد!»26پس از آن، يوشع با شمشير خود آن پنج پادشاه را كشت و آنها را بر پنج دار آويخت. پيكرهای بیجان آنها تا غروب بردار ماندند.27بعد از غروب آفتاب، مطابق دستور يوشع جنازههای آنها را از بالای دار پايين آورده، در درون همان غاری كه پنهان شده بودند، انداختند. سپس سنگهای بزرگ بر دهانهٔ آن غار گذاشتند كه تا امروز همچنان باقيست.
تصرف شهرهای جنوبی اموریها
28در همان روز يوشع به شهر مقيده حمله كرده، آن را گرفت و پادشاه و تمام اهالی آنجا را كشت به طوری كه هيچكدام از ساكنان آنجا نتوانستند جان به در ببرند.29بعد از آن، يوشع و افرادش به لبنه حمله كردند،30و خداوند آنجا را نيز با پادشاهش به دست ايشان تسليم نمود، و آنها تمام ساكنان آن را مانند اهالی شهر اريحا از دم شمشير گذراندند.31بعد از آن، به شهر لاخيش حمله بردند.32در روز دوم، خداوند آن شهر را به دست ايشان تسليم نمود. آنها تمام اهالی شهر را مثل اهالی لبنه از دم شمشير گذراندند.33هنگامی كه اسرائيلیها به لاخيش حمله كردند، هورام پادشاه جازر با لشكر خود سر رسيد تا به مردمان شهر لاخيش كمک نمايد. اما يوشع، او و تمام افرادش را شكست داد و كسی از آنها را زنده نگذاشت.34-35يوشع و افرادش در همان روز به شهر عجلون نيز حمله بردند و تمام ساكنان آنجا را مانند اهالی لاخيش هلاک نمودند.36-37بعد از عجلون به شهر حبرون حمله كردند و آن را با تمام آبادیهای اطرافش گرفتند و پادشاه و همهٔ ساكنانش را كشتند، به طوری كه يک نفر هم زنده باقی نماند.38-39سپس از آنجا به شهر دبير بازگشتند و آن را با تمام دهكدههای اطرافش گرفتند و پادشاه و همهٔ مردمش را مانند اهالی لبنه قتل عام نمودند.40به اين ترتيب، يوشع تمام آن سرزمين را به تصرف درآورد و قبايل و پادشاهانی را كه در كوهستانها، كوهپايهها، دشتها و نگب زندگی میكردند از بين برد. قوم اسرائيل چنانكه خداوند دستور داده بود، تمام ساكنان آن سرزمين را هلاک نمودند.41از قادش برنيع تا غزه و از جوشن تا جبعون همه را قتل عام كردند.42همهٔ اين پيروزیها در يک لشكركشی انجام شد، زيرا خداوند، خدای اسرائيل، برای قومش میجنگيد.43پس از آن، يوشع با تمام افراد خود به اردوگاه خويش در جلجال بازگشت.
