1Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel.2Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,3for the customs of the peoples are vanity.[1] A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. (Isa 40:20; Isa 44:9; Isa 45:20)4They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. (Isa 40:19; Isa 41:7)5Their idols[2] are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. 1ای بنیاسرائيل، به پيامی كه خداوند به شما میدهد، گوش فرا دهيد:2«از راه و رسم ساير قومها پيروی نكنيد و مانند آنها از حركات ستارگان و افلاک نترسيد و فكر نكنيد سرنوشت شما را آنها تعيين میكنند.3رسمها و راههای آنها چقدر پوچ و احمقانه است؛ درختی از جنگل میبرند و نجار با ابزارش از آن بتی میسازد،4سپس با طلا و نقره زينتش میدهند و با ميخ و چكش آن را در محل استقرارش محكم میكنند تا نيفتد.5درست مانند مترسكی در جاليز است كه نه حرف میزند و نه راه میرود، بلكه كسی بايد آن را بردارد و جابهجا نمايد، پس شما از چنين بتی نترسيد! چون نه میتواند صدمهای بزند و نه كمكی بكند.»6ای خداوند، خدائی مثل تو وجود ندارد، چون تو بزرگی و نامت پرقدرت است!7ای پادشاهِ تمام قومها، كيست كه از تو نترسد؟ فقط تو شايستهٔ احترامی! در تمام سرزمينها و در بين تمام حكيمان، همتای تو يافت نمیشود!8آنانی كه بت میپرستند، همگی احمق و نادانند! از بتهای چوبی چه میتوانند بياموزند؟9از سرزمين ترشيش ورقهای كوبيده شدهٔ نقره، و از«اوفاز» طلا میآورند و هنرمندان و زرگران ماهر، آنها را به روی بتها میكشند؛ سپس دوزندگان هنرمند از پارچههای آبی و ارغوانی، لباسهای زيبا میدوزند و بر آنها میپوشانند.10ولی خداوندا، تو تنها خدای حقيقی میباشی، تو خدای زنده و پادشاه ابدی هستی! از خشم تو تمام زمين میلرزد، و قومها به هنگام غضب تو میگريزند و خود را پنهان میسازند!11به كسانی كه بت میپرستند بگوييد: «خدايانی كه در خلقت آسمان و زمين نقشی نداشتهاند از روی زمين محو و نابود خواهند شد.»12اما خدای ما با قدرت خود زمين را ساخت، و با حكمتش جهان را بنياد نهاد و با دانايی خود آسمانها را بوجود آورد.13به فرمان اوست كه ابرها در آسمان میغرند؛ اوست كه ابرها را از نقاط دور دست زمين برمیآورد، برق ايجاد میكند، باران میفرستد، و باد را از خزانههای خود بيرون میآورد!14آنانی كه در مقابل بتهايشان سجده میكنند چقدر نادانند! سازندگان آنها شرمسار و رسوا خواهند شد، زيرا آنچه میسازند، دروغين است و جان در آنها نيست.15همهٔ اين بتها بیارزش و مسخرهاند! وقتی سازندگانشان از بين بروند، بتهايشان هم از ميان خواهند رفت.16اما خدای يعقوب مثل اين بتها نيست، او خالق همه موجودات است و بنیاسرائيل قوم خاص او میباشد؛ نام او خداوند قادر متعال است.
ويرانی قريبالوقوع
17ای شما كه در محاصره به سر میبريد، اموال خود را جمع كنيد و آمادهٔ حركت شويد!18زيرا خداوند میفرمايد: «اين بار شما را از اين سرزمين بيرون خواهم انداخت و چنان بلايی بر سر شما نازل خواهم نمود كه حتی يک نفرتان نيز جان به در نبريد!»19در آن روزها مردم يهودا فرياد كرده، خواهند گفت: «زخمهايمان چقدر عميق است! اميدی به شفا نيست! ولی بايد تحمل كنيم چون اين مجازات ماست!20خانه و كاشانهمان خراب شده؛ بچههايمان را از آغوشمان بردهاند و ديگر هرگز آنها را نخواهيم ديد؛ كسی هم باقی نمانده كه به كمک او دوباره خانهمان را بسازيم».21شبانان و رهبران قوم اسرائيل احمق و نادان شدهاند و ديگر از خداوند هدايت نمیطلبند؛ از اين رو شكست خواهند خورد و قومشان مانند گله بیسرپرست پراكنده خواهند شد.22اينک هياهويی به گوش میرسد! هياهوی لشكر بزرگی كه از سوی شمال میآيد تا شهرهای يهودا را ويران كند و آنها را لانهٔ شغالها سازد!

23ای خداوند، میدانم كه انسان حاكم بر سرنوشت خود نيست و اين توانايی را ندارد كه مسير زندگی خود را تعيين كند.24خداوندا، ما را تأديب و اصلاح كن، ولی با ملايمت، نه با خشم و غضب، و گرنه نابود میشويم.25آتش خشم و غضب خود را بر قومهايی بريز كه تو را نمیشناسند و از تو پيروی نمیكنند، چون بنیاسرائيل را آنها از بين بردهاند و اين سرزمين را به کلی ويران كردهاند.
