1In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. (2Ki 18:13; 2Ki 18:17; 2Ch 32:1)2And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh[1] from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. (Jos 15:20; Jos 15:39; 2Ch 32:9; Isa 7:3)3And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder. (Isa 22:15; Isa 22:20)4And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours? (Isa 10:8)5Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me?6Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. (Eze 29:6)7But if you say to me, “We trust in the Lord our God,” is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, “You shall worship before this altar”? (De 12:2; 2Ki 18:4)8Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.9How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? (Isa 10:8; Isa 20:5; Isa 30:3; Isa 30:7; Isa 31:1)10Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it.”’” (Isa 10:5)11Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” (Ezr 4:7; Da 2:4)12But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?”13Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!14Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you. (2Ch 32:6; Isa 37:10)15Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord by saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”16Do not listen to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me[2] and come out to me. Then each one of you will eat of his own vine, and each one of his own fig tree, and each one of you will drink the water of his own cistern,17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. (2Ki 18:11)18Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? (2Ki 17:6; Isa 37:13; Jer 49:23)20Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” (2Ch 32:19)21But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.”22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh. (2Ki 18:13; 2Ch 32:1)2سپس لشكری را به سرپرستی فرماندهٔ قوای خود از لاكيش به اورشليم نزد حزقيای پادشاه فرستاد. او بر سر راه«مزرعهٔ رخت شورها» نزد قنات بركهٔ بالا اردو زد.3الياقيم (پسر حلقيا)، سرپرست امور دربار حزقيای پادشاه؛ شبنا، کاتب و يوآخ (پسر آساف)، وقايعنگار دربار نزد او رفتند.4فرماندهٔ قوای آشور اين پيغام را برای حزقيا فرستاد: «پادشاه بزرگ آشور میگويد كه تو به چه كسی اميد بستهای؟5تو كه از تدابير جنگی و قدرت نظامی برخوردار نيستی، بگو چه كسی تكيهگاه توست كه اينچنين بر ضد من قيام كردهای؟6اگر به مصر تكيه میكنی، بدان كه اين عصای دست تو، نی ضعيفی است كه طاقت وزن تو را ندارد و بزودی میشكند و به دستت فرو میرود. هر كه به پادشاه مصر اميد ببندد عاقبتش همين است!7اگر شما بگوييد به خداوند، خدای خود تكيه میكنيم، بدانيد كه او همان خدايی است كه حزقيا تمام معبدهای او را كه بر فراز تپهها بودند خراب كرده و دستور داده است كه همهٔ مردم در برابر قربانگاه اورشليم عبادت كنند.8من از طرف آقايم، پادشاه آشور حاضرم با شما شرط ببندم. اگر بتوانيد دو هزار اسب سوار پيدا كنيد من دو هزار اسب به شما خواهم داد تا بر آنها سوار شوند!9حتی اگر مصر هم به شما اسب سوار بدهد باز به اندازهٔ يک افسر سادهٔ آقايم قدرت نخواهيد داشت.10آيا خيال میكنيد من بدون دستور خداوند به اينجا آمدهام؟ نه! خداوند به من فرموده است تا به سرزمين شما هجوم آورم و نابودش كنم!»11آنگاه الياقيم، شبنا و يوآخ به او گفتند: «تمنا میكنيم به زبان ارامی صحبت كنيد، زيرا ما آن را میفهميم. به زبان عبری حرف نزنيد، چون مردمی كه بر بالای حصارند به حرفهای شما گوش میدهند.»12ولی فرماندهٔ آشور جواب داد: «مگر سرورم مرا فرستاده است كه فقط با شما و پادشاه صحبت كنم؟ مگر مرا نزد اين مردمی كه روی حصار جمع شدهاند نفرستاده است؟ آنها هم به سرنوشت شما محكومند تا از نجاست خود بخورند و از ادرار خود بنوشند!»13آنگاه فرماندهٔ آشور با صدای بلند به زبان عبری به مردمی كه روی حصار شهر بودند گفت: «به پيغام پادشاه بزرگ آشور گوش دهيد:14نگذاريد حزقيای پادشاه شما را فريب دهد. او هرگز نمیتواند شما را از چنگ من برهاند.15سخن او را كه میگويد: به خداوند توكل نماييد تا شما را برهاند، باور نكنيد، زيرا اين شهر به دست ما خواهد افتاد.16به حزقيای پادشاه گوش ندهيد. پادشاه آشور میگويد كه تسليم شويد و در سرزمين خود با امنيت و آرامش زندگی كنيد17تا زمانی كه بيايم و شما را به سرزمينی ديگر ببرم كه مانند سرزمين شما پر از نان و شراب، غله و عسل، و درختان انگور و زيتون است. اگر چنين كنيد زنده خواهيد ماند.18پس به حزقيا گوش ندهيد، زيرا شما را فريب میدهد و میگويد كه خداوند شما را خواهد رهانيد. آيا تاكنون خدايان ديگر هرگز توانستهاند بندگان خود را از چنگ پادشاه آشور نجات دهند؟19بر سر خدايان حمات، ارفاد، سفروايم، هينع و عوا چه آمد؟ آيا آنها توانستند سامره را نجات دهند؟20كدام خدا هرگز توانسته است سرزمينی را از چنگ من نجات دهد؟ پس چه چيز سبب شده است فكر كنيد كه خداوندِ شما میتواند اورشليم را نجات دهد؟»21مردمی كه روی حصار بودند سكوت كردند، زيرا پادشاه دستور داده بود كه چيزی نگويند.22سپس الياقيم، شبنا و يوآخ لباسهای خود را پاره كرده، نزد حزقيای پادشاه رفتند و آنچه را كه فرماندهٔ قوای آشور گفته بود، به عرض او رساندند.
