1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. (De 13:6; 1Sa 19:2; 1Sa 20:17; 2Sa 1:26) 2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. (1Sa 17:15) 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. (1Sa 18:1) 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5 And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. (1Sa 18:14; 1Sa 18:30) 6 As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.[1] (Ex 15:20; Jud 11:34) 7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” (Ex 15:21; 1Sa 21:11; 1Sa 29:5) 8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” (1Sa 15:28) 9 And Saul eyed David from that day on. 10 The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. (Jud 9:23; 1Sa 16:14; 1Sa 16:16; 1Sa 19:9; 1Sa 19:23; 1Ki 18:29; Ac 16:16) 11 And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice. (1Sa 19:10; 1Sa 20:33) 12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. (1Sa 16:14; 1Sa 16:18; 1Sa 18:15; 1Sa 18:28; 1Sa 18:29; 1Sa 28:15) 13 So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. (Nu 27:17; 1Sa 18:16; 2Sa 5:2) 14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. (1Sa 18:5; 1Sa 18:12) 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. (1Sa 18:14) 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them. (1Sa 18:5) 17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me and fight the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” (1Sa 14:49; 1Sa 17:25; 1Sa 18:21; 1Sa 18:25; 1Sa 25:28) 18 And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father’s clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” (1Sa 18:23; 2Sa 7:18) 19 But at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife. (Jud 7:22; 2Sa 21:8) 20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. (1Sa 18:17; 1Sa 18:28) 21 Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time,[2] “You shall now be my son-in-law.” (Ex 10:7; 1Sa 18:17; 1Sa 18:26) 22 And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king’s son-in-law.’” 23 And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” (Nu 16:9) 24 And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” 25 Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. (Ge 34:12; Ex 22:17; 1Sa 14:24; 1Sa 18:17; 1Sa 18:21) 26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired, (1Sa 18:21) 27 David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife. (1Sa 18:13; 2Sa 3:14) 28 But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, (1Sa 18:12; 1Sa 18:20) 29 Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually. 30 Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed. (1Sa 18:5; 1Sa 19:8; 2Sa 11:1)

1-4 وقتی گفتگوی شائول و داوود تمام شد، يوناتان پسر شائول، علاقهٔ زيادی به داوود پيدا كرد. يوناتان او را مثل جان خودش دوست میداشت. يوناتان با داوود عهد دوستی بست و به نشانهٔ اين عهد، ردايی را كه بر تن داشت و شمشير و كمان و كمربند خود را به داوود داد. از آن روز به بعد شائول، داوود را در اورشليم نگاه داشت و ديگر نگذاشت به خانهٔ پدرش برگردد. 5 شائول هر مأموريتی كه به داوود میسپرد، او آن را با موفقيت انجام میداد. از اين رو وی را يكی از فرماندهان سپاه خود ساخت. از اين امر، هم مردم و هم سربازان خشنود بودند. 6-7 پس از آنكه داوود جليات را كشته بود و سپاه فاتح اسرائيل به وطن برمیگشت، در طول راه، زنان از تمام شهرهای اسرائيل با ساز و آواز به استقبال شائول پادشاه بيرون آمدند. آنها در حالی که میرقصيدند اين سرود را میخواندند: «شائول هزاران نفر و داوود دهها هزار نفر را كشته است!» 8 شائول با شنيدن اين سرود سخت غضبناک گرديد و با خود گفت: «آنها میگويند كه داوود دهها هزار نفر را كشته است، ولی من هزاران نفر را! لابد بعد هم خواهند گفت كه داوود پادشاه است!» 9 پس، از آن روز به بعد، شائول از داوود كينه به دل گرفت. 10-11 در فردای آن روز روح پليد از جانب خدا بر شائول آمد و او را در خانهاش پریشانحال ساخت. داوود مثل هر روز شروع به نواختن چنگ نمود. ناگهان شائول نيزهای را كه در دست داشت به طرف داوود پرتاب كرد تا او را به ديوار ميخكوب كند. اما داوود خود را كنار كشيد. اين عمل دو بار تكرار شد. 12 شائول از داوود میترسيد، زيرا خداوند با داوود بود ولی شائول را ترک گفته بود. 13 سرانجام شائول او را از دربار بيرون كرد و مقام پايينتری در سپاه خود به وی محول نمود. اما اين امر باعث شد مردم بيش از پيش با داوود در تماس باشند. 14 داوود در تمام كارهايش موفق میشد، زيرا خداوند با او بود. 15-16 وقتی شائول پادشاه متوجه اين امر شد، بيشتر هراسان گرديد، ولی مردم اسرائيل و يهودا، داوود را دوست میداشتند زيرا با آنها معاشرت میكرد. 17 روزی شائول به داوود گفت: «من حاضرم دختر بزرگ خود ميرب را به عقد تو درآورم. اما اول بايد شجاعت خود را در جنگهای خداوند ثابت كنی.» (شائول با خود میانديشيد: «به جای اينكه دست من به خون او آغشته شود، او را به جنگ فلسطينیها میفرستم تا آنها او را بكشند.») 18 داوود گفت: «من كيستم كه داماد پادشاه شوم؟ خانوادهٔ ما قابل اين افتخار نيست.» 19 اما وقتی زمان عروسی داوود و ميرب رسيد، شائول او را به مردی به نام عدریئيل از اهالی محولات داد. 20 ولی ميكال دختر ديگر شائول عاشق داوود بود و شائول وقتی اين موضوع را فهميد خوشحال شد. 21 شائول با خود گفت: «فرصتی ديگر پيش آمده تا داوود را به جنگ فلسطينیها بفرستم. شايد اين دفعه كشته شود!» پس به داوود گفت: «تو فرصت ديگری داری كه داماد من بشوی. من دختر كوچک خود را به تو خواهم داد.» 22 در ضمن، شائول به درباريان گفته بود به طور محرمانه با داوود صحبت كرده، بگويند: «پادشاه از تو راضی است و همهٔ افرادش تو را دوست دارند. پس بيا و داماد پادشاه شو.» 23 داوود چون اين سخنان را از مأموران شائول شنيد گفت: «آيا فكر میكنيد كه داماد پادشاه شدن آسان است؟ من از يک خانوادهٔ فقير و گمنام هستم.» 24-25 وقتی درباريان شائول آنچه را كه داوود گفته بود به شائول گزارش دادند، او گفت: «به داوود بگوييد كه مهريهٔ دختر من فقط صد قَلَفِهٔ مرد كشته شدهٔ فلسطينی است. تنها چيزی كه من طالبش هستم، انتقام گرفتن از دشمنان است.» ولی در حقيقت قصد شائول اين بود كه داوود به دست فلسطينیها كشته شود. 26 داوود از اين پيشنهاد خشنود گرديد و پيش از آنكه زمان معين برسد، 27 او با افرادش رفت و دويست فلسطينی را كشت و قَلَفِههای آنها را برای شائول آورد. پس شائول دختر خود ميكال را به او داد. 28-29 شائول وقتی ديد كه خداوند با داوود است و دخترش ميكال نيز داوود را دوست دارد از او بيشتر ترسيد و هر روز بيش از پيش از وی متنفر میشد. 30 هر موقع كه فلسطينیها حمله میكردند، داوود در نبرد با آنها بيشتر از ساير افسران شائول موفق میشد. بدين ترتيب نام داوود در سراسر اسرائيل بر سر زبانها افتاد.
