1Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, look and take note! Search her squares to see if you can find a man, one who does justice and seeks truth, that I may pardon her. (Ge 18:23; 2Ch 16:9; Jer 5:7)2Though they say, “As the Lord lives,” yet they swear falsely. (Jer 7:9; Tit 1:16)3O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent. (Jer 2:30; Eze 3:8)4Then I said, “These are only the poor; they have no sense; for they do not know the way of the Lord, the justice of their God. (Jer 8:7; Mic 3:1)5I will go to the great and will speak to them, for they know the way of the Lord, the justice of their God.” But they all alike had broken the yoke; they had burst the bonds. (Ps 2:3; Ps 107:14; Jer 2:20)6Therefore a lion from the forest shall strike them down; a wolf from the desert shall devastate them. A leopard is watching their cities; everyone who goes out of them shall be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many, their apostasies are great. (Jer 2:19; Jer 4:7; Ho 13:7; Hab 1:8; Zep 3:3)7“How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores. (De 32:15; De 32:21; Jos 23:7; 2Ch 13:9; Jer 5:1; Jer 9:2; Jer 23:10; Mic 5:1; Ga 4:8)8They were well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for his neighbor’s wife. (Jer 13:27; Jer 50:11; Eze 22:11)9Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord; and shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this? (Jer 5:29; Jer 9:9; Ro 2:2)10“Go up through her vine rows and destroy, but make not a full end; strip away her branches, for they are not the Lord’s. (Jer 4:27; Jer 39:8)11For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have been utterly treacherous to me, declares the Lord. (Jer 3:20)12They have spoken falsely of the Lord and have said, ‘He will do nothing; no disaster will come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine. (Ge 3:4; Isa 28:15; Jer 14:13)13The prophets will become wind; the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them!’”
The Lord Proclaims Judgment
14Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: “Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them. (Jer 1:9; Ob 1:18; Zec 12:6; Re 11:5)15Behold, I am bringing against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, declares the Lord. It is an enduring nation; it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor can you understand what they say. (De 28:49; Isa 33:19; Jer 1:15; Jer 34:21; Am 6:14)16Their quiver is like an open tomb; they are all mighty warriors. (Ps 5:9; Isa 5:28)17They shall eat up your harvest and your food; they shall eat up your sons and your daughters; they shall eat up your flocks and your herds; they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees; your fortified cities in which you trust they shall beat down with the sword.” (Le 26:16; De 28:31; De 28:33; De 28:51; Ho 8:14)18“But even in those days, declares the Lord, I will not make a full end of you. (Jer 5:10)19And when your people say, ‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ you shall say to them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.’” (De 4:27; De 28:47; De 28:68; De 29:24; 1Ki 9:8; Jer 13:22; Jer 16:10; Jer 22:8)20Declare this in the house of Jacob; proclaim it in Judah:21“Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes, but see not, who have ears, but hear not. (De 32:6; Isa 6:9; Mt 13:14)22Do you not fear me? declares the Lord. Do you not tremble before me? I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea, a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass; though the waves toss, they cannot prevail; though they roar, they cannot pass over it. (Job 26:10; Job 38:10; Ps 46:3; Ps 104:9; Jer 10:7; Jer 51:55)23But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; they have turned aside and gone away. (Jer 6:28)24They do not say in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’ (Ge 8:22; De 11:14; Job 5:10; Ps 147:8; Jer 14:22; Mt 5:45)25Your iniquities have turned these away, and your sins have kept good from you. (Jer 3:3)26For wicked men are found among my people; they lurk like fowlers lying in wait.[1] They set a trap; they catch men. (Ps 10:9; Ps 124:7; Pr 1:11)27Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great and rich;28they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy. (De 32:15; Isa 1:23; Jer 7:6; Zec 7:10)29Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord, and shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?” (Jer 5:9)30An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: (Jer 23:14; Ho 6:10)31the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes? (Jer 6:13; Jer 14:14; Jer 14:18; Jer 20:6; Jer 23:21; Jer 23:25; Jer 27:10; Jer 27:15; Jer 29:9; Eze 13:6; Mic 2:11)
1„Cutreierați drumurile Ierusalimului, priviți cu luare-aminte și căutați în piețe! Dacă veți găsi un om care să înfăptuiască ce este drept și să caute adevărul, voi ierta Ierusalimul.2Ei chiar și atunci când jură: «Viu este DOMNUL!», fac jurăminte false.“3DOAMNE, nu se uită ochii Tăi la credincioșie? Tu îi lovești, dar ei nu simt durere. Tu îi mistui, dar ei refuză să primească îndrumarea. Își fac obrazul[1] mai tare ca piatra și refuză să se pocăiască.4Îmi ziceam: „Aceștia sunt doar cei neînsemnați; ei se poartă nesăbuit, căci ei nu cunosc căile DOMNULUI, poruncile Dumnezeului lor.5Așa că voi merge la cei mari și le voi vorbi. Cu siguranță ei cunosc căile DOMNULUI și poruncile Dumnezeului lor.“ Însă cu toții au sfărâmat jugul și au rupt legăturile.6Din această cauză, un leu din pădure îi va ataca și un lup din pustie îi va distruge. Leopardul îi va pândi în apropierea cetăților lor ca să‑i sfâșie pe toți cei ce vor ieși din ele, căci fărădelegile lor s‑au înmulțit, iar necredincioșiile lor sunt numeroase.7„De ce să te iert? Fiii tăi M‑au părăsit și jură pe ceea ce nu este Dumnezeu. Le‑am împlinit toate nevoile, dar ei încă mai comit adulter și se îmbulzesc în casa prostituatei.8Sunt niște armăsari bine hrăniți și aflați în călduri; fiecare nechează după soția semenului său.9Să nu‑i pedepsesc Eu oare pentru aceasta? zice DOMNUL. Să nu mă răzbun Eu pe un asemenea neam?10Suiți în viile ei și nimiciți, dar o distrugere deplină să nu faceți! Îndepărtați‑i mlădițele, căci nu mai sunt ale DOMNULUI!11Casa lui Israel și Casa lui Iuda Mi‑au fost necredincioase“, zice DOMNUL.12S‑au lepădat de DOMNUL și au zis: „Nu se va întâmpla așa![2] Niciun rău nu va veni asupra noastră; nu vom vedea nici sabia, nici foametea!13Profeții sunt vânt și Cuvântul nu este în ei, așa că ceea ce spun ei, să li se întâmple lor!“14De aceea, așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul Oștirilor: „Pentru că poporul a spus[3] aceste cuvinte, iată, voi face cuvintele Mele în gura ta un foc, iar poporul acesta – precum lemnele pe care le mistuie focul.15Iată, aduc împotriva voastră un neam de departe, Casă a lui Israel, zice DOMNUL, un neam trainic, un neam străvechi, a cărui limbă nu o cunoașteți și a cărui vorbire nu o înțelegeți.16Tolba lui este ca un mormânt deschis; toți sunt niște viteji.17Ei îți vor devora secerișul și pâinea, îți vor devora fiii și fiicele, îți vor devora turmele și cirezile, îți vor devora viile și smochinii și‑ți vor distruge prin sabie cetățile fortificate în care te încrezi.18Totuși, nici în zilele acelea nu vă voi distruge de tot, zice DOMNUL.19Dacă vor întreba atunci: «De ce ne‑a făcut DOMNUL, Dumnezeul nostru, toate acestea?», să le răspunzi astfel: «După cum M‑ați părăsit și ați slujit unor dumnezei străini în țara voastră, tot așa veți sluji unor străini într‑o țară care nu este a voastră!»20Spuneți lucrul acesta Casei lui Iacov și vestiți‑l în Iuda, zicând:21«Ascultă lucrul acesta, popor nebun și fără minte, care ai ochi, dar nu vezi, ai urechi, dar nu auzi:22Nu vă temeți de Mine? zice DOMNUL. Nu tremurați înaintea Mea? Eu am pus nisipul ca hotar al mării, hotar veșnic pe care nu trebuie să‑l treacă. Chiar dacă valurile ei se agită, ele nu pot învinge și chiar dacă urlă, ele nu‑l pot trece.»23Poporul acesta însă are o inimă încăpățânată și răzvrătită. Ei și‑au întors spatele și au plecat.24Nu‑și zic în sinea lor: «Să ne temem de DOMNUL, Dumnezeul nostru, Care dă ploaie timpurie și ploaie târzie[4] la timpul potrivit și ne menține săptămânile rânduite pentru seceriș!»25Nelegiuirile voastre le îndepărtează pe acestea, și păcatele voastre rețin bunătățile de la voi.26Căci în poporul Meu se află oameni răi. Ei pândesc ca păsărarii din ascunziș; întind o cursă[5] și prind oameni.27Așa cum este o colivie plină de păsări, tot așa sunt și casele lor pline de înșelătorie. De aceea au ajuns ei puternici și s‑au îmbogățit,28s‑au îngrășat și lucesc de grăsime. Faptele lor rele nu au limită; ei nu pledează pentru cauza orfanului, ca s‑o câștige, nici nu apără dreptul celor nevoiași.29Să nu pedepsesc Eu oare aceste lucruri? zice DOMNUL. Să nu Mă răzbun Eu pe un asemenea neam?30Un lucru de necrezut și dezgustător se întâmplă în țară:31profeții profețesc minciuni și preoții conduc prin puterea lor, iar poporului Meu îi plac aceste lucruri. Dar ce veți face la sfârșit?
