1And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.6Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” (Lu 12:1; 1Co 5:6; Ga 5:9)7And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.”8But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? (Mt 6:30; Mt 26:10)9Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? The yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.6‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’7They discussed this among themselves and said, ‘It is because we didn’t bring any bread.’8Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, ‘You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?9Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?11How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’12Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’14They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’15‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’17Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.18And I tell you that you are Peter,[2] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[3] will not overcome it.19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[4] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[5] loosed in heaven.’20Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Jesus predicts his death
21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. ‘Never, Lord!’ he said. ‘This shall never happen to you!’23Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’24Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.25For whoever wants to save their life[6] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.26What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.28‘Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

But none will be given to them except the sign of Jonah.’ Then Jesus left them and went away.
The yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5The disciples crossed over to the other side of the lake. They had forgotten to take bread.6‘Be careful’, Jesus said to them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’7The disciples talked about this among themselves. They said, ‘He must be saying this because we didn’t bring any bread.’8Jesus knew what they were saying. So he said, ‘Your faith is so small! Why are you talking to each other about having no bread?9Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the 5,000? Don’t you remember how many baskets of pieces you gathered?10Don’t you remember the seven loaves for the 4,000? Don’t you remember how many baskets of pieces you gathered?11How can you possibly not understand? I wasn’t talking to you about bread. But watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’12Then the disciples understood that Jesus was not telling them to watch out for the yeast used in bread. He was warning them against what the Pharisees and Sadducees taught.
Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah
13Jesus went to the area of Caesarea Philippi. There he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’14They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.’15‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah. You are the Son of the living God.’17Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! No mere human showed this to you. My Father in heaven showed it to you.18Here is what I tell you. You are Peter. On this rock I will build my church. The gates of hell will not be strong enough to destroy it.19I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. What you lock on earth will be locked in heaven. What you unlock on earth will be unlocked in heaven.’20Then Jesus ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Jesus speaks about his coming death
21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples what would happen to him. He told them he must go to Jerusalem. There he must suffer many things from the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law. He must be killed and on the third day rise to life again.22Peter took Jesus to one side and began to scold him. ‘Never, Lord!’ he said. ‘This will never happen to you!’23Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are standing in my way. You do not have in mind the things God cares about. Instead, you only have in mind the things humans care about.’24Then Jesus spoke to his disciples. He said, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must say no to themselves. They must pick up their cross and follow me.25Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me will find it.26What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul? Or what can anyone trade for their soul?27The Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory. His angels will come with him. (Mt 12:38; Mt 19:3; Mt 22:18; Mr 8:11; Lu 11:16; Joh 6:30)2Er antwortete ihnen: Wenn es Abend wird, sagt ihr: Es kommt schönes Wetter; denn der Himmel ist feuerrot.3Und am Morgen sagt ihr: Heute kommt schlechtes Wetter, denn der Himmel ist feuerrot und trübt sich ein. Das Aussehen des Himmels wisst ihr zu beurteilen, die Zeichen der Zeit aber könnt ihr nicht beurteilen.4Diese böse und treulose Generation fordert ein Zeichen, aber es wird ihr kein anderes gegeben werden als das Zeichen des Jona. Die blinden Jünger
5Und die Jünger fuhren an das andere Ufer. Sie hatten vergessen, Brote mitzunehmen. (Mr 8:14)6Jesus sagte zu ihnen: Gebt Acht und hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer und Sadduzäer! (Lu 12:1)7Sie aber machten sich untereinander Gedanken und sagten: Wir haben kein Brot mitgenommen.8Als Jesus das merkte, sagte er: Ihr Kleingläubigen, was macht ihr euch darüber Gedanken, dass ihr kein Brot habt?9Begreift ihr noch nicht? Erinnert ihr euch nicht an die fünf Brote für die Fünftausend und wie viele Körbe ihr eingesammelt habt? Das Christusbekenntnis des Petrus und die Zusage Jesu
13Als Jesus in das Gebiet von Cäsarea Philippi kam, fragte er seine Jünger und sprach: Für wen halten die Menschen den Menschensohn? (Mr 8:27; Lu 9:18)14Sie sagten: Die einen für Johannes den Täufer, andere für Elija, wieder andere für Jeremia oder sonst einen Propheten. (Mt 14:2; Mr 6:14; Lu 9:7)15Da sagte er zu ihnen: Ihr aber, für wen haltet ihr mich?16Simon Petrus antwortete und sprach: Du bist der Christus, der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes! Die erste Ankündigung von Leiden und Auferstehung Jesu
21Von da an begann Jesus, seinen Jüngern zu erklären: Er müsse nach Jerusalem gehen und von den Ältesten und Hohepriestern und Schriftgelehrten vieles erleiden, er müsse getötet und am dritten Tag auferweckt werden. (Mt 17:22; Mt 20:17; Mr 8:31; Lu 9:22)22Da nahm ihn Petrus beiseite und begann, ihn zurechtzuweisen, und sagte: Das soll Gott verhüten, Herr! Das darf nicht mit dir geschehen!23Jesus aber wandte sich um und sagte zu Petrus: Tritt hinter mich, du Satan! Ein Ärgernis bist du mir, denn du hast nicht das im Sinn, was Gott will, sondern was die Menschen wollen. (Mt 4:10)
Nachfolge und Selbstverleugnung
24Darauf sagte Jesus zu seinen Jüngern: Wenn einer hinter mir hergehen will, verleugne er sich selbst, nehme sein Kreuz auf sich und folge mir nach. (Mt 10:38; Mr 8:34; Lu 9:23; Lu 14:27)25Denn wer sein Leben retten will, wird es verlieren; wer aber sein Leben um meinetwillen verliert, wird es finden. (Mt 10:39; Lu 17:33; Joh 12:25)26Was nützt es einem Menschen, wenn er die ganze Welt gewinnt, dabei aber sein Leben einbüßt? Um welchen Preis kann ein Mensch sein Leben zurückkaufen?27Der Menschensohn wird mit seinen Engeln in der Herrlichkeit seines Vaters kommen und dann wird er jedem nach seinen Taten vergelten.28Amen, ich sage euch: Von denen, die hier stehen, werden einige den Tod nicht schmecken, bis sie den Menschensohn in seinem Reich kommen sehen.
