1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness (Mt 4:1; Mr 1:12; Lu 1:15; Lu 3:3; Lu 3:21; Lu 3:22; Lu 4:14; Lu 4:18; Joh 1:33; Joh 3:34; Ac 6:5; Ac 10:38) 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. (De 9:9; De 9:18; 1Ki 19:8; Joh 4:6; Heb 2:18; Heb 4:15) 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” (Mt 14:33; Lu 3:8) 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” (De 8:3; Lu 4:8; Lu 4:10; Joh 4:34; Eph 6:17) 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, (Mt 4:8) 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. (Re 13:2) 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” (De 6:13; 1Sa 7:3; Lu 4:4; Lu 4:12) 9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, (Mt 4:5; Lu 4:3) 10 for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ (Ps 91:11) 11 and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” (Lu 4:10) 12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (De 6:16; Isa 7:12) 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. (Mt 4:12; Lu 4:1; Lu 4:37; Ac 1:8) 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. (Mt 4:23) 



16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. (Mt 13:54; Mr 6:1; Mr 6:2; Lu 2:39; Lu 2:51; Lu 4:31; Ac 13:15; Ac 13:27; Ac 15:21; Ac 17:2) 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, (Lu 3:4; Ac 8:28) 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, (Ps 146:7; Isa 42:7; Isa 58:6; Isa 61:1; Mt 11:5; Lu 4:1; Lu 6:20; Joh 9:39; Ac 1:2; Ac 26:18) 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Le 25:10; Isa 49:8; 2Co 6:2) 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. (Mt 5:1; Mt 13:2; Mt 26:55; Lu 19:48; Joh 8:2; Ac 3:4) 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Mt 1:22; Mr 12:10; Ac 8:35) 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” (Ps 45:2; Mt 13:55; Lu 3:23; Joh 6:42) 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” (Mt 11:23; Mt 27:42; Mr 2:1; Lu 23:39; Joh 4:46) 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. (Mt 13:57) 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, (1Ki 17:1; 1Ki 18:1; Jas 5:17; Re 11:6) 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. (1Ki 17:9) 27 And there were many lepers[1] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” (2Ki 5:1; 2Ki 7:3) 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. (Nu 15:35; Ac 7:58) 30 But passing through their midst, he went away. (Joh 8:59; Joh 10:39) 



31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, (Mt 4:13; Mt 4:23; Mr 1:21; Mr 6:2; Lu 4:15) 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. (Mt 7:28; Lu 4:36) 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, (Lu 4:31) 34 “Ha![2] What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” (Mt 8:29; Lu 1:35; Joh 6:69; Ac 3:14; Ac 19:15; Heb 7:26; Jas 2:19; 1Jo 2:20; Re 3:7) 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. (Mt 12:16; Lu 4:41) 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” (Mt 8:27; Lu 4:32) 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region. (Lu 4:14) 



38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. (Mt 8:14; Mr 1:29; 1Co 9:5) 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. (Mt 8:26; Mt 17:18; Mr 4:39; Mr 9:25; Lu 8:24; Lu 9:42) 40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. (Mr 5:23) 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. (Mt 1:17; Mt 14:33; Mr 3:11; Lu 4:33; Ac 16:17) 



42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, (Mr 1:35; Mr 1:36; Lu 5:16) 43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” (Mt 4:23; Mt 24:14; Lu 8:1; Lu 13:33; Lu 16:16; Ac 8:12) 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.[3] (Mr 1:39)

1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted[1] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’ 4 Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone.” ’ (De 8:3) 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, ‘I will give you all their authority and splendour; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.’ 8 Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.” ’ (De 6:13) 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: ‘ “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” ’ (Ps 91:11; Ps 91:12) 12 Jesus answered, ‘It is said: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ (De 6:16) 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. 



14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’[2] (Isa 58:6; Isa 61:1; Isa 61:2) 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’ 22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. ‘Isn’t this Joseph’s son?’ they asked. 23 Jesus said to them, ‘Surely you will quote this proverb to me: “Physician, heal yourself!” And you will tell me, “Do here in your home town what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.” ’ 24 ‘Truly I tell you,’ he continued, ‘no prophet is accepted in his home town. 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[3] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed – only Naaman the Syrian.’ 28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. 



31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 ‘Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!’ 35 ‘Be quiet!’ Jesus said sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. 36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, ‘What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!’ 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. 



38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. 40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of illness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. 42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.’ 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the River Jordan. The Spirit led him into the desert. 2 There the devil tempted him for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing during that time. At the end of the 40 days, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’ 4 Jesus answered, ‘It is written, “Man must not live only on bread.” ’ (De 8:3) 5 Then the devil led Jesus up to a high place. In an instant, he showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. 6 He said to Jesus, ‘I will give you all their authority and glory. It has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.’ 8 Jesus answered, ‘It is written, “Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve.” ’ (De 6:13) 9 Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem. He has sent me so that the blind will see again. He wants me to set free those who are treated badly. 19 And he has sent me to announce the year when he will set his people free.’ (Isa 61:1; Isa 61:2) 20 Then Jesus rolled up the scroll. He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were staring at him. 21 He began by saying to them, ‘Today this passage of Scripture is coming true as you listen.’ 22 Everyone said good things about him. They were amazed at the gracious words they heard from his lips. ‘Isn’t this Joseph’s son?’ they asked. 23 Jesus said, ‘Here is a saying you will certainly apply to me. “Doctor, heal yourself!” And you will tell me this. “Do the things here in your home town that we heard you did in Capernaum.” ’ 24 ‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ he continued. ‘A prophet is not accepted in his home town. 25 I tell you for sure that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah. And there had been no rain for three and a half years. There wasn’t enough food to eat anywhere in the land. 26 But Elijah was not sent to any of those widows. Instead, he was sent to a widow in Zarephath near Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel who had skin diseases in the days of Elisha the prophet. But not one of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian.’ 28 All the people in the synagogue were very angry when they heard that. 29 They got up and ran Jesus out of town. They took him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They planned to throw him off the cliff. 30 But Jesus walked right through the crowd and went on his way. 



31 Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man controlled by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice. 34 ‘Go away!’ he said. ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God!’ 35 ‘Be quiet!’ Jesus said firmly. ‘Come out of him!’ Then the demon threw the man down in front of everybody. And it came out without hurting him. 36 All the people were amazed. They said to each other, ‘What he says is amazing! With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits. And they come out!’ 37 The news about Jesus spread throughout the whole area. 



38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. At that time, Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they asked Jesus to help her. 39 He bent over her and commanded the fever to leave, and it left her. She got up right away and began to serve them. 40 At sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were ill. He placed his hands on each one and healed them. 41 Also, demons came out of many people. The demons shouted, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he commanded them to be quiet. He would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. 42 At dawn, Jesus went out to a place where he could be by himself. The people went to look for him. When they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, ‘I must announce the good news of God’s kingdom to the other towns also. That is why I was sent.’ 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

16 So kam er auch nach Nazaret, wo er aufgewachsen war, und ging, wie gewohnt, am Sabbat in die Synagoge. Als er aufstand, um vorzulesen, (Mt 13:54; Mr 6:1) 17 reichte man ihm die Buchrolle des Propheten Jesaja. Er öffnete sie und fand die Stelle, wo geschrieben steht: 18 Der Geist des Herrn ruht auf mir; / denn er hat mich gesalbt. Er hat mich gesandt, / damit ich den Armen eine frohe Botschaft bringe; damit ich den Gefangenen die Entlassung verkünde / und den Blinden das Augenlicht; damit ich die Zerschlagenen in Freiheit setze (Isa 29:18; Isa 58:6; Isa 61:1) 19 und ein Gnadenjahr des Herrn ausrufe. 20 Dann schloss er die Buchrolle, gab sie dem Synagogendiener und setzte sich. Die Augen aller in der Synagoge waren auf ihn gerichtet. 21 Da begann er, ihnen darzulegen: Heute hat sich das Schriftwort, das ihr eben gehört habt, erfüllt. 22 Alle stimmten ihm zu; sie staunten über die Worte der Gnade, die aus seinem Mund hervorgingen, und sagten: Ist das nicht Josefs Sohn? (Joh 6:42) 23 Da entgegnete er ihnen: Sicher werdet ihr mir das Sprichwort vorhalten: Arzt, heile dich selbst! Wenn du in Kafarnaum so große Dinge getan hast, wie wir gehört haben, dann tu sie auch hier in deiner Heimat! 24 Und er setzte hinzu: Amen, ich sage euch: Kein Prophet wird in seiner Heimat anerkannt. (Joh 4:44) 25 Wahrhaftig, das sage ich euch: In Israel gab es viele Witwen in den Tagen des Elija, als der Himmel für drei Jahre und sechs Monate verschlossen war und eine große Hungersnot über das ganze Land kam. (1Ki 17:1; Jas 5:17) 26 Aber zu keiner von ihnen wurde Elija gesandt, nur zu einer Witwe in Sarepta bei Sidon. (1Ki 17:8) 27 Und viele Aussätzige gab es in Israel zur Zeit des Propheten Elischa. Aber keiner von ihnen wurde geheilt, nur der Syrer Naaman. (2Ki 5:1) 28 Als die Leute in der Synagoge das hörten, gerieten sie alle in Wut. 29 Sie sprangen auf und trieben Jesus zur Stadt hinaus; sie brachten ihn an den Abhang des Berges, auf dem ihre Stadt erbaut war, und wollten ihn hinabstürzen. 30 Er aber schritt mitten durch sie hindurch und ging weg. 



31 Jesus ging hinab nach Kafarnaum, einer Stadt in Galiläa, und lehrte die Menschen am Sabbat. (Mt 8:14; Mr 1:21) 32 Sie waren außer sich vor Staunen über seine Lehre, denn er redete mit Vollmacht. (Mt 7:28) 33 In der Synagoge war ein Mensch, der von einem Dämon, einem unreinen Geist, besessen war. Der schrie mit lauter Stimme: 34 He, du, was haben wir mit dir zu tun, Jesus von Nazaret? Bist du gekommen, um uns ins Verderben zu stürzen? Ich weiß, wer du bist: der Heilige Gottes! (Mt 8:29; Mr 5:7; Lu 8:28) 35 Da drohte ihm Jesus: Schweig und verlass ihn! Der Dämon warf den Mann in ihre Mitte und verließ ihn, ohne ihm zu schaden. 36 Da waren alle erschrocken und einer fragte den andern: Was ist das für ein Wort? Mit Vollmacht und Kraft befiehlt er den unreinen Geistern und sie fliehen. 37 Und sein Ruf verbreitete sich in der ganzen Gegend. (Lu 4:14; Lu 5:15) 38 Jesus stand auf, verließ die Synagoge und ging in das Haus des Simon. Die Schwiegermutter des Simon aber hatte hohes Fieber und sie baten ihn für sie. 39 Er beugte sich über sie und gebot dem Fieber. Da wich es von ihr und sie stand sofort auf und diente ihnen. 40 Als die Sonne unterging, brachten die Leute ihre Kranken, die alle möglichen Gebrechen hatten, zu Jesus. Er legte jedem von ihnen die Hände auf und heilte sie. 41 Von vielen fuhren auch Dämonen aus und schrien: Du bist der Sohn Gottes! Da drohte er ihnen und ließ sie nicht reden; denn sie wussten, dass er der Christus war. (Mt 8:29; Mr 3:11) 



42 Bei Tagesanbruch verließ er die Stadt und ging an einen einsamen Ort. Aber die Menschen suchten ihn; und sie kamen zu ihm hin und wollten ihn festhalten, damit er nicht von ihnen wegginge. (Mr 1:38) 43 Er sagte zu ihnen: Ich muss auch den anderen Städten das Evangelium vom Reich Gottes verkünden; denn dazu bin ich gesandt worden. 44 Und er verkündete in den Synagogen Judäas.
